One image haunts me even as it steadies my thoughts. Hands. God&#8217;s hands and our hands. Jesus&#8217; hands. The hands of mothers and fathers and children in Ukraine. The hands of health care providers in places near and far. Hands that have the power to harm and destroy. Hands that break bread on Maundy Thursday. Hands that bless.<\/p>\n<p>I offer these words as a liturgical reflection on hands during Holy Week 2022. The reflection explores various meanings of the word &#8220;commend&#8221; in Luke 23.<\/p>\n<p>The realities of our lives\u2014<br \/>\nAll that we read about in the news or see happening around us:<br \/>\nEconomic<br \/>\nPolitical<br \/>\nSpiritual<br \/>\nTo what<br \/>\nTo whom<br \/>\ndo we commit these things?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFather, into your hands I commend my Spirit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The things we value\u2014love\u2014hold dear<br \/>\nTo whose hands do we entrust these things.<\/p>\n<p>It is a part of life. We hand in<br \/>\nHand over<br \/>\nHand on<br \/>\nHand off<br \/>\n\u201cPut your hand in the hand of the one\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jesus\u2014as he is dying\u2014commends himself\u2014his soul\u2014the marrow of his bones&#8211; into God\u2019s hands.<br \/>\nThe hands of the One who delivered from the womb of creation<br \/>\ndolphins and dandelions, marsupials and marigolds<br \/>\nThe hands of the One who ripped apart seas<br \/>\nto make a freedom way.<br \/>\nThe hands of the One who scooped up mud from the river:<br \/>\n\u201cWe are the clay; you are the potter. We are all the work of your hands.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>What if God\u2019s work\u2014continues on beyond crucifixion<br \/>\nin our hands?<\/p>\n<p>Gentle hands that have put Hello Kitty band aids on skinned knees. Arthritic hands that knit or build or garden through pain. Large hands that have held tiny hands as first steps were taken. Hands that set music free from pianos or organs or guitars. Hands that calm with a touch or write with a flair or feed with a fierce desire that none will go hungry. Hands that serve or wash or repair. Hands that resist with everything in them other hands that with clenched fist or the stroke of a pen or the push of a button mark the world with violence and hatred&#8212;<\/p>\n<p>God, the potter.<br \/>\nWe, the clay.<br \/>\nOur hands\u2014the work of God\u2019s hands.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFather, into your hands, I commend my Spirit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Do we?<br \/>\nentrust<br \/>\nour lives\u2014our well-being\u2014our thoughts and feelings and wildest imaginings<br \/>\nDo we commend<br \/>\nour contingent existence<br \/>\nthe whole of our lives in their radical temporariness&#8211;<br \/>\nDo we commend all of it\u2014into God\u2019s hands?<\/p>\n<p>Too many too soon forget this\u2014<br \/>\nthe uncompromising impermanence of human living.<br \/>\nOr perhaps we\u2014they\u2014are all too aware of it\u2014<br \/>\nSo they\u2014we\u2014live in fear.<br \/>\nReact to others with fear.<br \/>\nSoak faith in the bitter herbs of fear.<br \/>\nCling to what little postmortem knowledge we have<br \/>\nwith clenched hands animated by a redacted hermeneutic of fear.<\/p>\n<p>But Jesus\u2014in the end\u2014<br \/>\nAfter splashing up out of Jordan\u2019s waters<br \/>\nAfter calming seas and eating with tax collectors<br \/>\nBut Jesus\u2014in the end&#8211;<br \/>\nAfter refusing to be made king<br \/>\nAfter holding children in his arms<br \/>\nAfter breaking and blessing and giving<br \/>\nHere\u2014Jesus\u2014crucified\u2014dying\u2014even here:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFather, into your hands I commend my spirit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd having said this, he breathed his last.\u201d<br \/>\nJesus died. A childhood prayer on his lips.<br \/>\nWords of his mama\u2019s faith\u2014<br \/>\nWords learned as sun was setting on growing up days of laughter and play<br \/>\nnow slipping from his pain-ridden body.<br \/>\nPsalm 31: \u201cInto your hands I commend my Spirit.\u201d<br \/>\nLast words.<br \/>\nIntimate words.<br \/>\nBreathed out to the One who breathed into him the breath of life.<br \/>\nBreathed out to the One who breathed into all creation\u2014into you and me<br \/>\nthe breath of life.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFather, into your hands I commend my spirit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Do we?<\/p>\n<p>Will we?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>So many people across the globe have been on my mind throughout this Lenten season.
