McGann, RCSJ<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-59327 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/51QLgxtWmL._SY344_BO1204203200_.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"346\" srcset=\"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/51QLgxtWmL._SY344_BO1204203200_.jpg 225w, https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/51QLgxtWmL._SY344_BO1204203200_-195x300.jpg 195w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Who should read this?<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\"> Optimally \u2013 everyone who cares <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\" data-contrast=\"none\">about the eucharist.\u00a0 Realistically \u2013 probably more advanced readers, graduate students, perhaps, with an interest in eucharistic and\/or moral theology.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\" data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Why does it matter?<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\"> Eating and drinking eucharistically, without concern for the lived experience of others \u2013 especially the most vulnerable \u2013 calls into question the directive to \u201cGo in peace, glorifying the Lord by your life.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">What excited me the most? <\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">McGann\u2019s first chapter \u2013 an examination of the complex circumstances by which \u201ceating matters\u201d \u2013 was tantalizingly kaleidoscopic.\u00a0 With each new paragraph came so many new connections!<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">What will most inspire you?<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\"> Her eucharistic orientation around the table of Jesus and the early Christian community. Her proposal for a way beyond the corporate industrial food system that engulfs us.\u00a0 Her unification of environmental and eucharistic theologies.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Quibbles. <\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Only one real quibble for me. First, while <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">I<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\"> do not take issue with focusing on eating and table as being foundational for understanding the eucharist, there are good many Catholics who would prioritize sacrifice and altar. I wish that McGann would have done a little more to draw this eucharistic approach into the conversation, such that the global food crisis cannot be theologically sidestepped.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Kudos.<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\"> I so very appreciated how McGann was able to marry sacramental theology rooted in our lived experiences with pressing global concerns. Worship meets the world, indeed!\u00a0 Especially important and enlightening was her reliance on and application of <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">Laudato S\u00ed<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\">.\u00a0 Here she gave clear theological shape and application to how the eucharist should serve as both source and summit in the church\u2019s vocation to confront the injustice of hunger as it perpetuates and prolongs the ministry of Christ in the world.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">McGann, Mary E., RCSJ. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/litpress.org\/Products\/6031\/The-Meal-that-Reconnects\"><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">The Meal That Reconnects: Eucharistic Eating and the Global Food Crisis<\/span><\/i><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.
