January 2, 2022 : The Epiphany of the Lord <\/b>(where transferred)<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

The antiphon traditionally associated with this feast is given in the Missal and Graduale as \u201cWe have seen his star in the East, and have come with gifts to adore the Lord.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The First Reading of the Mass of the Day is Isaiah 60:1-6, which gives a strong indication of a theme of light over the nations, instead of a star over Bethlehem. The <\/span>Psallite <\/span><\/i>composers went one stage further and took their inspiration from the Office of Readings for the day, which includes the whole of Isaiah chapter 60. In particular they focused on verses 19-20, beginning<\/span><\/p>\n

The sun shall be no more your light by day,
\nnor for brightness shall the moon give you light;
\nbut the Lord will be your everlasting light,
\nand your God will be your glory.<\/p>\n

From there it is but a short step to Revelation, chapter 21-22, especially 22:5b-d:<\/span><\/p>\n

They will need no light of lamp or sun,
\nfor the Lord God will be their light,
\nand they will reign forever and ever.<\/p>\n

It was then easy to establish the canticle as Revelation 21:24-27ac and 22:3b-5, starting with verse 24 for the feast:<\/span><\/p>\n

The nations will walk by its light,
\nand the kings of the earth will bring their glory into it.<\/p>\n

and the antiphon text adapted from the preceding verse, Revelation 21:23:<\/span><\/p>\n

And the city has no need of sun or moon to shine on it,
\nfor the glory of God gives it light, and its lamp is the Lamb.<\/p>\n

May the glory of God light up our own lives!<\/span><\/p>\n

January 2, 2022 : 2nd Sunday after Christmas <\/b>(in places where Epiphany is not transferred)<\/span><\/p>\n

When the <\/span>Psallite<\/span><\/i> project was in preparation, across the English-speaking world the practice whereby the solemnity of the Epiphany was generally transferred to the nearest Sunday was well established, and therefore the 2nd Sunday after Christmas never occurred. The Collegeville Composers Group accordingly did not provide settings for this day. Since 2020 the situation has changed, and some countries have moved the Epiphany back to January 6. In 2022, in those countries, the 2nd Sunday after Christmas once again figures in the liturgical calendar.<\/span><\/p>\n

For the Gospel Communion on this day it would be possible to repeat <\/span>We Receive from Your Goodness<\/i><\/b> from the Christmas formulary, reflecting the repetition of the Prologue to John\u2019s Gospel which is heard again today.<\/span><\/p>\n

Alternatively, the 1974 <\/span>Graduale Romanum<\/span><\/i> provides the following Communion antiphon:<\/span><\/p>\n

O Lord, our Lord,
\nhow wonderful is your name in all the earth. (Ps 8:2)<\/p>\n

It would therefore be possible to use<\/p>\n

\u2014the Song for the Word from Trinity Sunday, occurring later in Year C, using the verses provided from Psalm 8, as suggested in the <\/span>Graduale<\/span><\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n
