{"id":58744,"date":"2021-12-28T00:58:48","date_gmt":"2021-12-28T06:58:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/?p=58744"},"modified":"2021-12-30T18:21:34","modified_gmt":"2021-12-31T00:21:34","slug":"a-hymn-for-the-holy-innocents","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/index.php\/2021\/12\/28\/a-hymn-for-the-holy-innocents\/","title":{"rendered":"A Hymn for the Holy Innocents"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One of the blessings of the proposed new English translation of the <em>Hymnal for the Hours<\/em> is an increase of hymns marking particular feasts.\u00a0 The feast of the Holy Innocents has always held a special place in my own liturgical spirituality, perhaps because it so beautifully holds up for our meditation undeserved suffering, suffering that has certainly marked our war-torn world with the death of civilians tolerated as \u201ccollateral damage.\u201d\u00a0 This hymn (with the exception of the final doxology) is drawn from the twelfth and final poem in the <em>Cathemerinon<\/em> of Aurelius Prudentius Clemens and combines stanzas assigned to Lauds and Vespers in the <em>Breviary of Pius V<\/em> (1568).<\/p>\n<p>Here are the stanzas assigned to Morning Prayer for the Feast of the Holy Innocents in the present <em>Liturgia Horarum<\/em>, with my slavishly literal translation of the text, followed by the proposed English translation of the <em>Hymnal for the Hours<\/em>:<\/p>\n<p>1. Audit tyrrnaus anxius<br \/>\nadesse regum principem,<br \/>\nqui nomen Israel regat<br \/>\nteneatque David regiam.<\/p>\n<p><em>The troubled tyrant hears that the ruler of the kings is present, who rules the family of Israel and holds the palace of David.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>2. Exclamat amens nuntio:<br \/>\n\u201cSuccesor instat, pellimur;<br \/>\nsatelles, i, ferrum rape,<br \/>\nperfunde cunas sanguine!\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>A madmaan, he exclaims with this message: \u201cMy successor is near, we are [to be] driven out: bodyguards, go, take up iron [weapons], flood the cradles with blood.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>3. Quo proficit tantum nefas?<br \/>\nQuid crimen Herodem iuvat?<br \/>\nUnus tot inter funera<br \/>\nImpune Christus tollitur.<\/p>\n<p><em>What does such an impious act accomplish?\u00a0 How does this crime assist Herod?\u00a0 One among all those slain is taken away without harm \u2013 Christ.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>4. Salvete, flores martyrum,<br \/>\nquos lucis ipso in limine<br \/>\nChristi insecutor sustulit<br \/>\nceu turbo nascentes rosas.<\/p>\n<p><em>Hail, flowers of the martyrs, whom at the very entrance into light, Christ\u2019s pursuer cuts down, like roses being born in a whirlwind.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>5. Vos prima Christi victima,<br \/>\ngrex immolatorum tener,<br \/>\naram sub ipsam simplices<br \/>\npalma et coronis Iuditis.<\/p>\n<p><em>You, first sacrifices of Christ, tender flock of those sacrificed, innocents beneath that very altar with palm and crowns you play.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>6. Iesu, tibi sit gloria,<br \/>\nqui natus es de Virgine,<br \/>\ncum Patre et almo Spiritu,<br \/>\nin sempiterna saecula. Amen.<\/p>\n<p><em>Jesus, to you be glory, you who were born of the Virgin, with the Father and the nourishing Spirit, unto the eternal ages.\u00a0 Amen<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>1. The troubled tyrant hears with dread<br \/>\nthat Christ, the King of kinds, has come<br \/>\nto rule the house of Israel<br \/>\nand take his place on David\u2019s throne.<\/p>\n<p>2. With frantic rage he cries aloud:<br \/>\n\u201cMy rival comes to drive me out.<br \/>\nNow go, my guard, take up your swords<br \/>\nand make those cradles flow with blood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>3. What profit comes from such a sin?<br \/>\nWhat gain for Herod from this crime?<br \/>\nIn safety Christ is borne away,<br \/>\nalone among so many slain.<\/p>\n<p>4. Hail, flowers of the martyrs, fresh and young,<br \/>\nWho at the very dawn of life<br \/>\nWere crushed by Christ\u2019s relentless foe,<br \/>\nLike budding roses in a gale.<\/p>\n<p>5. O tender lambs of sacrifice,<br \/>\nFirst victims from the flock of Christ,<br \/>\nBeneath that altar, innocent,<br \/>\nWith palm and crown you freely play.<\/p>\n<p>6. To you, Lord Jesus, glory be,<br \/>\nThe Virgin Mother\u2019s newborn Son,<br \/>\nWith God the Father, ever blest,<br \/>\nAnd loving Spirit, ever one. Amen.<\/p>\n<p>Exhibiting the 88.88 meter associated with \u201cAmbrosian\u201d hymns, these stanzas are a vivid meditation on the slaughter of the innocents.\u00a0 Stanza two, in employing dramatic monologue, looks ahead to later medieval hymnody such as the famous \u201c<em>Quem queritis<\/em>\u201d for Easter with its dialogue between the singers and Mary of Magdala.\u00a0 I am especially touched by the poetic imagery of the Holy Innocents compared to roses born in a whirlwind and the tender depiction of them playing with the symbols of their martyrdom \u2013 palms and crowns \u2013 beneath the altar of Christ.\u00a0 This hymn is a powerful challenge to contemporary hymn text writers to find the same balance between addressing the intellect and the heart in enacting liturgical anamnesis.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Here are the stanzas assigned to Morning Prayer for the Feast of the Holy Innocents in the present Liturgia Horarum, with my slavishly literal translation of the text, followed by the proposed English translation of the Hymnal for the Hours.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":17,"featured_media":58745,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[3118,22],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-58744","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-ars-celebrandi-new-ws","category-music-hymns"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.3 - Anselmo in Rome. He has served as a parochial vicar, a campus minister, and a parochial administrator (pastor). He is the author of six books and more than two hundred fifty articles and reviews in journals such as Worship, Ecclesia Orans, and Questions Liturgiques. He has composed and arranged more than 300 pieces of liturgical music.
