{"id":57950,"date":"2021-10-22T10:10:26","date_gmt":"2021-10-22T15:10:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/?p=57950"},"modified":"2021-10-22T10:10:26","modified_gmt":"2021-10-22T15:10:26","slug":"new-clarifications-on-liturgical-translation-from-the-cdwds","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/index.php\/2021\/10\/22\/new-clarifications-on-liturgical-translation-from-the-cdwds\/","title":{"rendered":"New Clarifications on Liturgical Translation from the CDWDS"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Archbishop Arthur Roche, prefect of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, has issued a <a href=\"https:\/\/press.vatican.va\/content\/salastampa\/it\/bollettino\/pubblico\/2021\/10\/22\/0683\/01452.html#ingle\"><strong>decree<\/strong><\/a> with clarifications concerning liturgical translation.<\/p>\n<p>The decree explains in detail how the process of translating liturgical texts is supposed to work, with respect to the shared responsibilities of bishops&#8217; conferences and the Holy See. It is intended to provide more information concerning how the 2017 motu proprio of Pope Francis on liturgical translation, Magnum principium, will be put into practice.<\/p>\n<p>The introduction shows the scope of this project of correction:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Following the promulgation of Pope Francis\u2019 Motu Proprio <i>Magnum Principium,<\/i>\u00a0with which the norms of \u00a7\u00a7 2 and 3 of can. 838 of the C.I.C. were changed, it is necessary that whatever is found to the contrary in the\u00a0<i>Institutiones generales\u00a0<\/i>and in the<i>\u00a0Pr\u00e6notanda<\/i>\u00a0of the liturgical books, as well as in the Instructions, Declarations, and Notifications published by this Dicastery according to the old norms of \u00a7\u00a7 2 and 3 of can. 838 of the C.I.C. 1983, be corrected.<sup>[1]<\/sup>\u00a0This is especially true for the\u00a0<i>Institutio generalis Missalis Romani<\/i>\u00a02002 and 2008, for the\u00a0<i>Praenotanda<\/i>\u00a0of the second editions of the\u00a0<i>De Ordinatione Episcopi, presbyterorum et diaconorum<\/i>, of the\u00a0<i>Ordo celebrandi Matrimonium<\/i>\u00a0and of the editions of the\u00a0<i>De Exorcismis<\/i>\u00a0and of the\u00a0<i>Martyrologium Romanum<\/i>. It also applies in a particular way to the Instructions\u00a0<i>Varietates legitim\u00e6\u00a0<\/i>and\u00a0<i>Liturgiam authenticam.<\/i>\u00a0It must also be taken into account that whatever is said in the Decrees of promulgation of the individual liturgical books whenever reference is made to the authority or juridical competence of the Episcopal Conferences and of this Dicastery regarding adaptations and translations of texts in vernacular languages must be interpreted according to the letter and mind of the new canon 838.<sup>[2]<\/sup><\/p>\n<p>In line with the aforementioned Motu Proprio, the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments has considered it its duty to interpret and, as far as necessary, clarify the liturgical laws that it has issued on this matter, so that it may \u201chelp the Episcopal Conferences to fulfil their task as well as working to promote ever more the liturgical life of the Latin Church\u201d.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>* * *<\/p>\n<p>Archbishop Roche also responded to questions about this new decree in an interview with Vatican News.
