{"id":57815,"date":"2021-10-06T17:20:37","date_gmt":"2021-10-06T22:20:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/?p=57815"},"modified":"2021-10-17T09:29:15","modified_gmt":"2021-10-17T14:29:15","slug":"collect-varieties","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/index.php\/2021\/10\/06\/collect-varieties\/","title":{"rendered":"Collect Varieties"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The issue of translation will always be current in Catholicism.\u00a0 We will never have a \u201cperfect\u201d translation of the <em>Roman Missal<\/em>.\u00a0 There have been many translations of various parts and I am sure that there will be many more.<\/p>\n<p>I was looking at the Collect, or Opening Prayer, from last Sunday (23<sup>rd<\/sup> Sunday of the Year).\u00a0 Admittedly this is not the easiest prayer to translate.<\/p>\n<p>The original Latin (<u>Missale Romanum<\/u>, Editio Typica Tertia 2008) reads:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>Omn\u00edpotens sempit\u00e9rne Deus, qui abund\u00e1ntia piet\u00e1tis tu\u00e6<br \/>\net m\u00e9rita s\u00fapplicum exc\u00e9dis et vota,<br \/>\neff\u00fande super nos miseric\u00f3rdiam tuam,<br \/>\nut dim\u00edttas qu\u00e6 consci\u00e9ntia m\u00e9tuit,<br \/>\net ad\u00edcias quod or\u00e1tio non pr\u00e6s\u00famit<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The 1973 Sacramentary translated it in this way:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Father,<br \/>\nyour love for us<br \/>\nsurpasses all our hopes and desires.<br \/>\nForgive our failings,<br \/>\nkeep us in your peace<br \/>\nand lead us in the way of salvation.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This translation is a little over-simplified, but it is easy to understand and proclaim. It served the Church well for about 40 years. There was also an alternate opening prayer in the 1973 edition:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Almighty and eternal God,<br \/>\nFather of the world to come,<br \/>\nyour goodness is beyond what our spirit can touch<br \/>\nand your strength is more than the mind can bear.<br \/>\nLead us to seek beyond our reach<br \/>\nand give us courage to stand before your truth.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This prayer is a paraphrase, but still does a good job of communicating the heart of the Latin oration.<\/p>\n<p>The 1974 Irish edition of the Divine Office, translated in Glenstal Abbey and a rare example of an approved non-ICEL liturgical translation, has a different translation of the same prayer in the Morning Prayer (Lauds) of the same Sunday:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>Almighty, ever-living God,<br \/>\nwhose love surpasses all that we ask or deserve,<br \/>\nopen up for us the treasures of your mercy.<br \/>\nForgive us all that weights on our conscience,<br \/>\nand grant us more even than we dare to ask.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This is also a fine translation and can still be used today without any difficulty. It is also currently approved for use in the Liturgy in countries where <em>The Divine Office<\/em> is in use.<\/p>\n<p>The ill-fated 1998 Sacramentary renders the prayer in this manner:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Almighty and eternal God,<br \/>\nwhose bounty is greater than we deserve or desire,<br \/>\npour out upon us your abundant mercy;<br \/>\nforgive the things that weigh upon our consciences<br \/>\nand enrich us with blessings<br \/>\nfor which our prayers dare not hope.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This is a fine rendering and, I must admit, that personally it would be my own favorite of the translations I give here. The virtue of the 1998 is that it is easy to proclaim. The importance of the aural quality of the prayers cannot be overemphasized.<\/p>\n<p>The current 2011 translation of the Roman Missal translates the prayer in this way:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>Almighty ever-living God,e<br \/>\nwho in the abundance of your kindness<br \/>\nsurpass the merits and the desires of those who entreat you,<br \/>\npour out your mercy upon us<br \/>\nto pardon what conscience dreads<br \/>\nand to give what prayer does not dare to ask.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>From a technical point of view, this is a good translation.\u00a0 However it is more a literary translation that can be read carefully and slowly.\u00a0 But it is more of a challenge to pray it out loud at Mass. Since 2020 he has also served as the Executive Secretary for Liturgy to the Irish Catholic Bishops Conference. He has studied at Seton Hall University (BA, MDiv), the University of Notre Dame (MA), and St Vladimir\u2019s Orthodox Theological Seminary (MTh). He holds a Doctorate in Theology (Ph.D.) from St Patrick\u2019s College, Maynooth and is in the process of completing a second doctorate (D.D) in the Pontifical Facultad de Teolog\u00eda Redemptoris Mater in Callao, Peru. Neil has published a translation of the Confessio of St. Patrick: St. Patrick: His Confession and Other Works (Totowa, NJ, 2009), as well editing the third edition of Fredrick Edward Warren\u2019s The Liturgy and Ritual of the Celtic Church (Piscataway, NJ, 2010). In 2011 the University of Notre Dame Press published The Eucharist in Pre-Norman Ireland an adaptation of his doctoral thesis and in 2017 the Alcuin Club published his Liturgical Orientation: The Position of the President at the Eucharist. His articles have appeared in The Irish Theological Quarterly, New Blackfriars, The Furrow and Antiphon.
