As the world faces yet another damning report of Catholic clergy sexual abuse of minors [more than 200,000 <\/span><\/span>children sexually abused by <\/span><\/span>Catholic <\/span><\/span>clergy in <\/span><\/span>France si<\/span><\/span>nce 1950<\/span><\/span>]<\/span><\/span>, <\/span><\/span>I return once again to an intrinsic link between the Eucharist and betrayal that first comforted me some years ago.<\/span><\/span> It goes something like this:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

I realiz<\/span><\/span>ed<\/span><\/span> t<\/span><\/span>h<\/span><\/span>at the Eucharist is not only <\/span><\/span>\u201cthe efficacious sign and sublime cause of that communion in the divine life and that unity of the People of God by which the Church is kept in being\u201d (CCC # 1325)<\/span><\/span>, but <\/span><\/span>also<\/span><\/span>, at its heart and in its roots, a moment of <\/span><\/span>profound<\/span><\/span> betrayal.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

In the times we are forced to live through, I have returned to this <\/span><\/span>realization<\/span><\/span>, especially at Mass. <\/span><\/span>I have understood more deeply than before that, when the Eucharistic Prayer invites us to ponder <\/span><\/span>the <\/span><\/span>night<\/span><\/span> before Jesus\u2019s death<\/span><\/span>, it is <\/span><\/span>both<\/span><\/span> the night on which he shared a last meal with friends <\/span><\/span>and<\/span><\/span> the night in which he was betrayed. In this night, Jesus broke open the meaning of his life as Divine gift of self <\/span><\/span>in the sharing of bread and wine, <\/span><\/span>a<\/span><\/span>nd<\/span><\/span> found that gift to be betrayed, not by a stranger or outsider but by one of the twelve.<\/span><\/span> In other words, the night <\/span><\/span>and the meal w<\/span><\/span>e recall at every celebration of the Eucharist<\/span><\/span> is not only <\/span><\/span>about <\/span><\/span>the <\/span><\/span>ultimate gift of self <\/span><\/span>for the life of the world for all <\/span><\/span>ages<\/span><\/span> to come, but woven deeply into that Divine gift of self is the human betrayal of that gift.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

I take strange comfort in that knowledge these days: that what we enter into in every celebration of the Eucharist is <\/span><\/span>both <\/span><\/span>\u201cthe culmination both of God’s action sanctifying the world in Christ and of the worship [we] offer to Christ and through him to the Father in the Holy Spirit” <\/span><\/span>(CCC # 1325) and <\/span><\/span>at the <\/span><\/span>same time the <\/span><\/span>very denial of all that. <\/span><\/span>W<\/span><\/span>oven into every eucharistic celebration, ever since the Last Supper, are glimpses of <\/span><\/span>human betrayal<\/span><\/span>, or, more <\/span><\/span>basic and <\/span><\/span>all-encompassing, the <\/span><\/span>mysterium<\/span><\/span>iniquitatis<\/span><\/span>\u00a0(“the mystery of evil”)<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Maybe there is a flicker of hope in that, for the living of these days? <\/span><\/span>Jesus<\/span><\/span>, after all, did not<\/span><\/span> offer <\/span><\/span>to <\/span><\/span>us <\/span><\/span>a perfect, harmonious<\/span><\/span>, <\/span><\/span>beautiful <\/span><\/span>moment <\/span><\/span>of self-giving, but a deeply troubled <\/span><\/span>night and meal<\/span><\/span>, <\/span><\/span>that nevertheless \u2013 and precisely <\/span><\/span>i<\/span><\/span>n<\/span><\/span> all its troubled<\/span><\/span>–<\/span><\/span>ness <\/span><\/span>— <\/span><\/span>spells life for the world, and for each of us. <\/span><\/span>Who, after all<\/span><\/span>, ever comes to the eucharistic table without having betrayed<\/span><\/span>, <\/span><\/span>if<\/span><\/span> only in the smallest <\/span><\/span>of <\/span><\/span>ways, <\/span><\/span>what God calls us to<\/span><\/span> be<\/span><\/span>?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
