A recent <a href=\"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/index.php\/2021\/07\/10\/preaching-to-the-choir\/\">post<\/a> has analyzed this decrease in religious practice that is common throughout the West. This isn\u2019t an exclusively Catholic phenomenon but can be found across denomination lines.<\/p>\n<p>A number of PrayTell posts (e.g. <a href=\"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/index.php\/2021\/07\/09\/short-commentary-lay-led-house-churches-in-the-church-of-england\/\">here<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/index.php\/2018\/11\/16\/londons-floating-church\/\">here<\/a>) have looked at various initiatives from the Anglican Communion and their willingness to try something new.\u00a0 However, I think that at times the Church of England can go too far.\u00a0 I did a post in 2019 on <a href=\"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/index.php\/2019\/08\/25\/is-god-a-tourist-attraction\/\">the helter-skelter that was set up in Norwich Cathedral and the miniature golf course in Rochester Cathedral<\/a>.\u00a0 Now there is another news story in many outlets that again features Norwich Cathedral.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/sciencetech\/article-9769749\/Dippy-peoples-dinosaur-hits-Norwich-Cathedral.html\">Dippy the Dinosaur<\/a> has recently gone on display in Norwich Cathedral. The massive 85 foot replica of a diplodocus is a plaster cast copy of the fossilized bones of a dinosaur that was unearthed by railway workers in Wyoming in 1898. The original is in the Carnegie Museum of Natural History in Pittsburgh, PA.\u00a0 This plaster cast copy has been in London\u2019s Natural History Museum since 1905. I still remember the impression it made on me when I visited the museum as a child. It was a massive display that took up the main hall of the NHM in London. \u00a0Since 2018 the replica dinosaur has being doing a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhm.ac.uk\/take-part\/dippy-on-tour.html?utm_source=short-url&amp;utm_medium=short-url&amp;utm_campaign=dippy\">tour<\/a> of Great Britain and the North of Ireland and the <a href=\"https:\/\/dippy.cathedral.org.uk\/\">Cathedral<\/a> is the eighth and final stop on its tour. So far 1.7 million people have seen Dippy on this tour.<\/p>\n<p>Dippy is set up in the nave of the cathedral giving his back to the altar. The Cathedral\u2019s website assures parishioners that \u201cworship at the Cathedral will continue as usual.\u201d Although with the dinosaur is taking up the top 85 feet of the nave, I am not sure how regular worship can take place.<\/p>\n<p>I can see that there is a value in attracting people to visit our churches and historic buildings. I will even admit that certain concerts might not be the worst thing in the world.\u00a0 However, a dinosaur is a step too far. It is bad enough that some think that Faith belongs to a more primitive world and has been totally superseded by our modern world that has all the answers.\u00a0 But Dino in a cathedral just begs for some wag to claim that people of faith are dinosaurs!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>N.B. the photo accompanying this post is of Dippy at the Kelvingrove Museum &amp; Art Gallery on the Glasgow leg of the tour. His articles have appeared in The Irish Theological Quarterly, New Blackfriars, The Furrow and Antiphon. Neil Xavier O'Donoghue"},"description":"Neil Xavier O\u2019Donoghue is originally from Cork, Ireland. He is a presbyter of the Archdiocese of Newark, NJ who has ministered in parishes on both sides of the Atlantic. He has spent many years as an academic mentor to seminarians. Neil currently serves as Programme Director for Liturgical Programmes at the Pontifical University and as Acting Director of the National Centre for Liturgy. Since 2020 he has also served as the Executive Secretary for Liturgy to the Irish Catholic Bishops Conference. He has studied at Seton Hall University (BA, MDiv), the University of Notre Dame (MA), and St Vladimir\u2019s Orthodox Theological Seminary (MTh). He holds a Doctorate in Theology (Ph.D.) from St Patrick\u2019s College, Maynooth and is in the process of completing a second doctorate (D.D) in the Pontifical Facultad de Teolog\u00eda Redemptoris Mater in Callao, Peru. Neil has published a translation of the Confessio of St. Patrick: St. Patrick: His Confession and Other Works (Totowa, NJ, 2009), as well editing the third edition of Fredrick Edward Warren\u2019s The Liturgy and Ritual of the Celtic Church (Piscataway, NJ, 2010). In 2011 the University of Notre Dame Press published The Eucharist in Pre-Norman Ireland an adaptation of his doctoral thesis and in 2017 the Alcuin Club published his Liturgical Orientation: The Position of the President at the Eucharist. His articles have appeared in The Irish Theological Quarterly, New Blackfriars, The Furrow and Antiphon.
