{"id":56952,"date":"2021-07-08T08:57:18","date_gmt":"2021-07-08T13:57:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/?p=56952"},"modified":"2021-07-17T07:57:24","modified_gmt":"2021-07-17T12:57:24","slug":"nope","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/index.php\/2021\/07\/08\/nope\/","title":{"rendered":"Nope!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>At\u00a0<em>New Liturgical Movement,<\/em> one reads <a href=\"http:\/\/New Liturgical Movement: The Legacy and Tragic Flaws of Summorum Pontificum\">this claim<\/a> about the unreformed rite (what the author calls the &#8220;traditional rite&#8221;) celebrated before the Second Vatican Council:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cIt is precisely in the celebration of the traditional rite that we see the authentic fulfillment of what Vatican II wanted and asked for in <em>Sacrosanctum Concilium.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Nope!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>All the evidence indicates that the fathers of Vatican II intended not that the old rite continue, but rather that it be entirely replaced by a reformed rite. Here is a quick selection of relevant phrases from <em>Sacrosanctum Concilium:<\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8230; \u201creform of the liturgy,\u201d \u201crites revised,\u201d \u201ca general restoration of the liturgy itself,\u201d \u201celements subject to change,\u201d \u201cboth texts and rites drawn up,\u201d \u201cnew forms,\u201d \u201cliturgical books revised as soon as possible,\u201d \u201crevision of the liturgy,\u201d \u201crites should be short, clear, and unencumbered by useless repetitions,\u201d \u201cmore reading from holy scripture, more varied and suitable,\u201d \u201cno rigid uniformity,\u201d \u201clegitimate variations and adaptations,\u201d \u201cdrawing up rites and devising rubrics,\u201d \u201cadaptations,\u201d \u201can even more radical adaptation of the liturgy,\u201d \u201crestoration of the liturgy,\u201d \u201cnecessary experiments,\u201d \u201crite of Mass revised,\u201d \u201crites simplified,\u201d \u201celements discarded,\u201d \u201celements restored,\u201d \u201cmore representative portion of the holy scriptures,\u201d \u201cprayer of the faithful restored,\u201d \u201ccommunion under both kinds,\u201d \u201cnew rite for concelebration,\u201d \u201cchanges have become necessary,\u201d \u201cparticular rituals prepared,\u201d \u201ccatechumenate restored,\u201d \u201cboth rites of baptism of adults revised,\u201d \u201crite for baptism of infants revised,\u201d \u201cbaptismal rite should contain variants,\u201d \u201ca new rite drawn up,\u201d \u201crite of confirmation revised,\u201d \u201crite and formulas for sacrament of penance revised,\u201d \u201cnumber of anointings adapted,\u201d \u201cprayers of rite of anointing revised,\u201d \u201cordination rites revised,\u201d \u201cmarriage rite revised and enriched,\u201d \u201csacramentals to undergo a revision,\u201d \u201crite of religious profession drawn up,\u201d \u201crite of burial of infants revised,\u201d \u201cCompline drawn up,\u201d \u201cMatins adapted,\u201d \u201cPrime suppressed,\u201d \u201crevising the Roman office,\u201d \u201cpsalms no longer distributed throughout one week,\u201d &#8220;readings from sacred scripture arranged,\u201d \u201cliturgical year revised,\u201d \u201cmore use of baptismal features proper to the Lenten liturgy,\u201d \u201can edition prepared containing simpler melodies,\u201d \u201crevision of the liturgical books,\u201d \u201claws less suited to the reformed liturgy harmonized or abolished\u201d &#8230;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The point is not that Vatican II emphasized only change and innovation. One could readily draw up a second list of citations from <em>Sacrosanctum Concilium<\/em> stating that the new, reformed liturgy would be similar to the previous rite, in continuity with it, or the like. But the items on this second list would be entirely about a reformed liturgy, never about the preconciliar liturgy.<\/p>\n<p>There is no indication, anywhere in <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/hist_councils\/ii_vatican_council\/documents\/vat-ii_const_19631204_sacrosanctum-concilium_en.html\">Sacrosanctum Concilium<\/a><\/em>, that the pre-Vatican II rites should remain in public use alongside the reformed liturgy. None.<\/p>\n<p>Paul VI <a href=\"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/index.php\/2019\/04\/17\/fifty-years-of-the-missal-promulgated-by-paul-vi-a-reform-for-the-renewal-of-the-church\/\">said this<\/a> in 1976:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>We beseech all our children, and all Catholic communities to celebrate the rites of the restored liturgy with dignity and fervent devotion. Use of the new <em>Ordo Missae<\/em>\u00a0is in no way left up to the choice of priests or people. The Instruction of 14 June 1971 provided that celebration of Mass according to the former rite would be permitted, by faculty from the Ordinary, only for aged or sick priests offering the sacrifice without a congregation.
