The Press Office of the Holy See released a letter of Pope Francis on the Syro-Malabar liturgy today.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

In the letter the Holy Father urges the members of the Syro-Malabar Church \u00a0to foster to \u201ca uniform mode of celebrating the Holy\u00a0Qurbana,\u00a0<\/i>considering this an important step towards increasing stability and ecclesial communion\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

To the Bishops, Clergy, Religious and Laity of the Syro-Malabar Church<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The Holy See regards with special approval and encouragement the agreement unanimously reached by the Synod of Bishops of the Syro-Malabar Church in 1999 \u2013 and repeatedly endorsed in subsequent years \u2013 for a uniform mode of celebrating the Holy\u00a0Qurbana,\u00a0<\/i>considering this an important step towards increasing stability and ecclesial communion within the whole body of your beloved Church. The concerted efforts towards applying this auspicious development in the great Jubilee Year 2000 gave joyful confidence in your\u00a0sui iuris<\/i>\u00a0Church to my saintly predecessor Pope John Paul II.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Notwithstanding some difficulties, which require ongoing discernment in the life of your vibrant Church, the approved norms for the Eucharistic celebration have borne considerable fruit including evangelization in those places, especially the missionary Eparchies, where the whole community has joined in peaceful and prayerful observance, interpreting the continuing consensus of the Hierarchy as a fruit of the Holy Spirit.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

I strongly urge the Syro-Malabar Bishops to persevere, and I confirm their ecclesial \u201cwalking together\u201d with God\u2019s people, trusting that \u201ctime is greater than space\u201d (cf.\u00a0Evangelii Gaudium,\u00a0<\/i>222-225) and that \u201cunity prevails over conflict\u201d (cf.\u00a0ibid,\u00a0<\/i>226-230).I willingly take the occasion of the recognition of the new\u00a0Raza Qurbana Taksa<\/i>\u00a0to exhort all the clergy, religious and lay faithful to proceed to a prompt implementation of the uniform mode of celebrating the Holy\u00a0Qurbana,<\/i>\u00a0for the greater good and unity of your Church. May the Holy Spirit foster harmony, fraternity and unity among all members of your Church as you work to implement the Synodal decision.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Entrusting all of you to the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Holy Patriarch Saint Joseph and the Apostle Saint Thomas, I gladly impart my Apostolic Blessing. I assure you of my closeness in prayer and ask you, please, to pray for me.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

I have no real experience of the Syro-Malabar Church or Rite.\u00a0 But it is a very important Eastern Church in Communion with Rome with over 4 million members.\u00a0 A number of websites discuss some problems<\/a> with the new liturgical rites of the Syro-Malabar Church and a newspaper article from last year mentions problems with the orientation<\/a> of the celebration of the Eucharist. The various Eastern Churches in India have a common origin in the Thomas Christians, but are still suffering from divisions that followed the Portuguese colonization of India and the attempts of the Portuguese to reform the local Church.\u00a0 This led to the split of the original Thomas Christians into a myriad of different groupings<\/a>. The Academia<\/a> page of Prof. Paul Pallath of Rome\u2019s Oriental Institute provides the best material for further study of these liturgical rites.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The Syro-Malabar rite was revised after the Synod of Diamper of 1599. Over the years it was gradually Latinized through contact with different European missionaries.\u00a0 In the twentieth century there was an attempt to renew the Syro-Malabar liturgy under Pope Pius XII and the renewal of the Roman Rite after Vatican II did have some influence on how the Syro-Malabar liturgy was celebrated.\u00a0 A lot of the tensions there seem to be between those who want to strip the liturgy of its Latin influences and return to its East Syrian roots. I think this is the context in which the letter of Pope Francis must be interpreted. The Pope encourages unity and point out that in spite of \u201csome difficulties \u2026 the uniform mode of celebrating\u201d the liturgical rites will lead to \u201cthe greater good and unity of [the] Church \u2026 [and] foster harmony, fraternity and unity among all members of [the] Church\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"

He is a presbyter of the Archdiocese of Newark, NJ who has ministered in parishes on both sides of the Atlantic. He has spent many years as an academic mentor to seminarians. Neil currently serves as Programme Director for Liturgical Programmes at the Pontifical University and as Acting Director of the National Centre for Liturgy. Since 2020 he has also served as the Executive Secretary for Liturgy to the Irish Catholic Bishops Conference. He has studied at Seton Hall University (BA, MDiv), the University of Notre Dame (MA), and St Vladimir\u2019s Orthodox Theological Seminary (MTh). He holds a Doctorate in Theology (Ph.D.) from St Patrick\u2019s College, Maynooth and is in the process of completing a second doctorate (D.D) in the Pontifical Facultad de Teolog\u00eda Redemptoris Mater in Callao, Peru. Neil has published a translation of the Confessio of St. Patrick: St. Patrick: His Confession and Other Works (Totowa, NJ, 2009), as well editing the third edition of Fredrick Edward Warren\u2019s The Liturgy and Ritual of the Celtic Church (Piscataway, NJ, 2010). In 2011 the University of Notre Dame Press published The Eucharist in Pre-Norman Ireland an adaptation of his doctoral thesis and in 2017 the Alcuin Club published his Liturgical Orientation: The Position of the President at the Eucharist. His articles have appeared in The Irish Theological Quarterly, New Blackfriars, The Furrow and Antiphon.
