{"id":56909,"date":"2021-07-02T19:35:58","date_gmt":"2021-07-03T00:35:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/?p=56909"},"modified":"2025-09-03T18:37:39","modified_gmt":"2025-09-03T23:37:39","slug":"a-timely-tract-on-social-injustices","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/index.php\/2021\/07\/02\/a-timely-tract-on-social-injustices\/","title":{"rendered":"A Timely Tract&#8230;on Social Injustices"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>While many Catholic Christians mind their own business, the injustices suffered by migrant workers, the gross discriminations against black men and women (even at times within the walls of Catholic churches), economic oppressions of all sorts\u2026violent vigilante antics based on the <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-56910 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/women-great-depression_gettyimages-535786685-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" srcset=\"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/women-great-depression_gettyimages-535786685-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/women-great-depression_gettyimages-535786685-600x338.jpg 600w, https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/women-great-depression_gettyimages-535786685-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/women-great-depression_gettyimages-535786685.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>principle that might is right, etc., go on, with hardly a prominent Catholic voice raised in protest.<\/p>\n<p>I know of a recent instance where a priest did preach on social justice in one of our largest cities, and he shielded himself behind abundant quotations from <em>Quadragesimo Anno<\/em> (Pope Pius XI\u2019s encyclical on social teaching).\u00a0 The priest received a letter from a prominent parishioner, a most faithful church-goer, who told the priest he should stay with the preaching of religion and not meddle in economics, otherwise she would attend church elsewhere after this, and she was even ready to tell the pope the same if he did not mind his business better!<\/p>\n<p>Now, before we go any further, and regardless of how you feel about the anecdote I just shared, let me share my source.\u00a0 Because, the above are not my words.\u00a0 These words were written 85 years ago, and appeared in a prominent Catholic journal.\u00a0 The journal is <em>Orate Fratres <\/em>(now <em>Worship<\/em>).\u00a0 The author is Fr. Virgil Michel, OSB.<\/p>\n<p>The first two paragraphs of the above are excerpted (with a couple of edits for clarity\u2019s sake) from Fr. Virgil\u2019s first \u201cTimely Tract,\u201d a column which first appeared in <em>Orate Fratres <\/em>volume 11, issue 2, in 1936 (pp. 78-80).\u00a0 <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-56911 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/Timely-Tract-Clip-300x126.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"421\" height=\"177\" srcset=\"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/Timely-Tract-Clip-300x126.png 300w, https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/Timely-Tract-Clip.png 504w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 421px) 100vw, 421px\" \/>The series was meant to be pointed, evening pointing, raising difficult issues about how Catholics intersected with the times\u2014and the issues of race, economic oppression and equity, and violent antics which riddled the United States and the world.\u00a0 Virgil believed these problems should rile Catholics to action, not complacency, compliance, or, even worse: righteous indignation.<\/p>\n<p>Virgil died in November of 1938, less than two years after he wrote this first Timely Tract on social justice.\u00a0 The series would be continued by others, including the fearless Hans Anscar Reinhold.\u00a0 And, while I\u2019ll need to corroborate this hypothesis with other historians of <em>Orate Fratres<\/em>\/<em>Worship<\/em>, I believe that the pointed and poignant \u201cAmen Corner,\u201d composed for many years by Nathan D. Mitchell, functioned in much the same way.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-56914 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/typewriter-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/typewriter-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/typewriter-420x280.jpg 420w, https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/typewriter.jpg 499w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Fr. Virgil\u2019s passion for social action is well known, as is his ability to connect and inspire diverse leaders across the United States to animate the liturgical movement.\u00a0 What is perhaps equally well known is how we contemporary Catholics\u2014perhaps even more so than our ancestors of eight decades ago\u2014continue to fail to connect liturgical worship with social action.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"auto\">In the United States, where debates over online gambling regulations highlight divisions in addressing societal vulnerabilities, social issues are politicized to the point of immobility. Can you think of a social issue which hasn\u2019t been trussed into silence by strangles of red and blue? Platforms that attract users through <a href=\"https:\/\/najlepsze-kasyna-online.org\/\">top kasyna internetowe<\/a> often fuel discussions on economic risks that disproportionately affect lower-income groups. Is it possible to speak of care for the poor, the marginalized, the other, without aligning yourself with somebody\u2019s political \u201cside,\u201d particularly when entertainment industries exploit financial desperation under the guise of opportunity?<\/p>\n<p>As Bishop McElroy of San Diego has famously warned, the heart of the liturgy, the <a href=\"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/index.php\/2021\/06\/19\/the-bishops-document-on-eucharist-a-teaching-moment\/\">Eucharist<\/a>, is at this very moment becoming a <a href=\"Such%20an%20attitude%20doesn\u2019t%20end%20in%20complacency.%20%20This%20isn\u2019t%20complacency.%20This%20is%20compliance%20with%20systems%20of%20evil.\">political weapon<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>What would Virgil have done with a news item like that one?<\/p>\n<p>We can talk about refusing the Eucharist to members of political parties.\u00a0 But if we\u2019re choosing to do that, don\u2019t you think we should talk about rescuing migrant families?\u00a0 Or renouncing racial bias?\u00a0 Or rejecting a minimum wage that hasn\u2019t changed since 2009?<\/p>\n<p>What would Virgil have done with news items like those?<\/p>\n<p>I think that Virgil would have preached the Gospel, as he did, 85 years ago.\u00a0 And this is what he says: \u201cChrist preached his gospel first of all to the humble, the lowly, the downtrodden, the poor.\u00a0 \u2026 Who can deny that we\u2026have at times been guilty, all of us, of alienation of the toiling masses?\u201d\u00a0 The \u201cnatural result\u201d of such alienation, Virgil describes, is the exodus from Mass by these same persons.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s take \u201ctoiling masses\u201d to refer to all those laborers in the vineyard\u2014be they children, women, men, black, brown, white, speak English or not, etc.\u2014and ask how the Church, or its members, are alienating those same persons?<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-56913 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/vineyard.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"305\" height=\"203\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In Virgil\u2019s moment of 1936\u2014Communism, fascism, and agnosticism were growing threats.\u00a0 Now, we would add, among other things, a simple apathy\u2014a confusion about why anyone would possibly need or want organized religion.\u00a0 It is easier to become a <a href=\"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/index.php\/2018\/04\/29\/viewpointspirituality-without-religion-does-not-hold-up\/\">sheila<\/a>.\u00a0 Or a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewforum.org\/2019\/10\/17\/in-u-s-decline-of-christianity-continues-at-rapid-pace\/\">none<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>How to get beyond the polarization which freezes Catholic social action into silence?\u00a0 I know I don\u2019t agree with the letter-writing \u201cprominent parishioner\u201d that Virgil recounted eight and a half decades ago.\u00a0 I want to hear the Church speak about religion\u2014and social justice.\u00a0 Is not the liturgy the source of social regeneration?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Can you think of a social issue which hasn\u2019t been trussed into silence by strangles of red and blue?\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":55,"featured_media":56914,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_jetpack_newsletter_access":"","_jetpack_dont_email_post_to_subs":false,"_jetpack_newsletter_tier_id":0,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paywalled_content":false,"_jetpack_feature_clip_id":0,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false,"footnotes":"","jetpack_post_was_ever_published":false},"categories":[3119,187],"tags":[3009,2182,3015,3506,58],"class_list":["post-56909","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-the-plaza-new-ws","category-social-justice","tag-mass","tag-liturgy","tag-social-justice","tag-timely-tract","tag-virgil-michel"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.7 -
