This is clearly not the most difficult conjunction
\nof a national observance with the Catholic liturgical calendar
\nthat any have ever had to preach.<\/p>\n

In 2018 Valentine\u2019s day fell on Ash Wednesday
\nso chocolates, roses, and champagne
\nfaced off with ashes, penance, and fasting.
\nThe looming question that day:
\nshould lovers observe church penitential practice?
\nAnd if so, would they have to perform some kind of
\nrelational penance for not having honored their beloved?<\/p>\n

On an annual basis, the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord
\nrecalling Christ\u2019s temple debut 40 days after his birth
\nalways conjoins with Ground Hog Day.
\nWith all due respect to Punxsutawney Phil, that concurrence
\nmakes me wonder about how Jesus might be
\ncasting his prophetic shadow that day.
\nLast year, February 2nd was also Super Bowl Sunday
\nwhich made me wonder if there was some
\nholy clouding over the San Francisco 49s
\nthat allowed the Kansas City chiefs to pull off
\ntheir sensational comeback?<\/p>\n

Maybe most challenging was three years ago, in 2018
\nwhen Easter fell on April Fools day \u2013 no joke.
\nSo how do you preach about resurrection
\nas God\u2019s own foolishness in Christ
\nwithout making Christianity itself look foolish?
\nIn comparison this coupling
\nof the Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
\nwith the annual celebration of our national Independence
\nmay not seem to be so challenging.<\/p>\n

After all, the professed values of our nation at its founding
\nwere quite resonate with Christianity.
\nAnd though some of our founding fathers
\nwere more a product of the Enlightenment than religion,
\nemphasizing reason over faith,
\nmany of those who led this country to independence
\nwere deeply committed Christians.
\nThere was even an active clergyman, John Witherspoon,
\nwho signed the Declaration of Independence.<\/p>\n

Furthermore, that Declaration is filled with statements
\nthat resonate deeply with Gospel values,
\nespecially those stirring but not always \u201cself-evident\u201d lines
\nthat all are created equal,
\nthat all are endowed by our Creator
\nwith certain inalienable rights
\nincluding life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.<\/p>\n

Even more, the whole of the Declaration
\nand the actions it undertakes
\nare done under an invocation of Divine Providence
\nand the request for holy protection.<\/p>\n

This happy wedding of the Christian faith
\nand our founding independence capsulized in this Declaration
\ncould give the impression that the United States of America,
\nwhose pledge of allegiance announces
\nthat we are a unified nation \u201cUnder God,\u201d
\nand Christianity are two sides of the same coin.
\nAfter all, our currency does proclaim that
\nas a nation, it is in God that we trust,
\nthough I always wonder what kind of God we trust in.<\/p>\n

So maybe this July 4th is a pseudo-Christian festival
\nand we gather here in this temple of belief
\nfor a liturgical affirmation of this \u201choly nation\u201d
\nclearly blessed \u2026 even chosen by God.<\/p>\n

But then, of course, pesky Jesus shows up today
\nwith his sidekicks
\ntempestuous Paul and spunky Ezekiel,
\na decidedly non-Americans trio,
\nwho collectively pull the rug out from under smug citizens
\nwho dare to believe that this or any country
\nis fully or even properly calibrated to gospel values.<\/p>\n

In the early 1980\u2019s a celebrated Lutheran theologian
\nteaching at the University of Chicago named Martin Marty
\ncoined the term \u201cpublic theology.\u201d
\nIn parallel writings, he talked about a \u201cpublic church,\u201d
\nnot as a singular denomination,
\nbut as a family of apostolic churches with Jesus at the center
\nthat are especially sensitive to the public order
\nthat surrounds and includes people of faith. [1]<\/p>\n

In that same vein, he argued that such churches
\nengage in \u201cpublic theology.\u201d
\nThis is not a form of evangelization bent on
\nacquiring new members,
\nbut rather is concerned with the contributions
\nsuch a public church makes to civic, social, and political life.
\nFrom my perspective, Jesus was the aboriginal public theologian.
\nHe theologized with the coin of the real in hand (Mt. 22:19-21),
\nhe narrated parables about God\u2019s reign
\nbreaking into human history (Mt. 13:11-17),
\nhe reached across social, cultural, and political boundaries
\nengaging Samaritan (John 4) and Syrophoenician women (Mark 7:24-29),
\nRoman centurions (Matt 8:5-13) and tree-climbing tax collectors (Luke 19:1-10).
\nUltimately tried before both religious and civil authorities (Mt. 26:57 and Mt. 27:11),
\nhe was executed in the public square
\nas an enemy of the state (Mt. 27:33-40).<\/p>\n

Even in today\u2019s apparently unremarkable gospel,
\nJesus the public theologian had something to say
\nnot only to his own society about God\u2019s reign
\nbut also about our own country\u2019s struggle to live God\u2019s justice.<\/p>\n

A close reading of that gospel reveals a remarkable level
\nof prejudice and discrimination
\noperative in Jesus\u2019 own society
\nand directed at this upstart outcast.<\/p>\n

The first comes from Jesus\u2019 own townsfolk
\nwho had just heard him teach in the synagogue.
\nWhile many were amazed,
\nothers clearly got their dander up
\nand filled with indignation demanded to know
\nwhere this rabbinical upstart got his chutzpah.<\/p>\n

The irony is that Nazareth was this backwater town,
\nmaybe 100-150 residents.
\nIn my imagination, it is a bit like the fictional town of Anatevka
\nin the musical Fiddler on the Roof,<\/em>
\nwhere everybody knows everybody else\u2019s business.
\nWhen you know everything about an individual and their family
\nit is easy to launch informed and effective insults
\ndredging up all sorts of dirt sure to embarrass or deflate.<\/p>\n

The Nazarenes were as gifted as any in this regard,
\nfirst trying to squash Jesus because they knew his trade.<\/a>
\nHe was slotted, categorized and pigeonholed as a worker
\nin polite language a craftsman,
\nbut nonetheless someone who worked with his hands,
\nwas presumed to inherit his father\u2019s status
\nand expected not to rise above that state.<\/p>\n

Then an unusual slap in the face that Mark does not whitewash
\nthough Luke will offer in a more politically correct version.<\/p>\n

If it was not enough to collapse Jesus\u2019 identity into his job,
\nthe same villagers insult him about his family.
\nIt is ordinary at the time of Jesus to identify a son by their father:
\nso we have Simon-bar-Jonah or son of Jonah,
\nJames and John the sons of Zebedee \u2026<\/p>\n

But here Jesus is identified as the \u201cson of Mary,\u201d
\na not too subtle hit that he was conceived illegitimately.
\nNo wonder the text comments that this fatherless lineage
\nwas scandalidzo<\/em> in Greek: the nice translation is
\n\u201ctook offense\u201d but this was scandalous.<\/p>\n

In response, Jesus the rebel, Jesus the public theologian,
\nJesus the incarnation of God\u2019s freedom from prejudice,
\nannounces in prophetic terms
\na Christological declaration of independence
\nfrom small mindedness, from classism
\nand, by extension, from every type of racism or sexism,
\nfor his prophetic role, while rejected by his clannish neighbors,
\ncould not be suppressed by their bias.
\nHis messianic announcement of inclusion and dignity,
\nnot just an inalienable human right but a divine gift,
\ncould not be extinguished by small minded neighbors.<\/p>\n

Today our nation revels in our independence
\nbut the rebel Jesus demands interdependence.
\nToday our nation thumps it chest about our strength
\nbut the cantankerous apostle Paul boasts only of weakness.
\nToday our national recalls a declaration that detailed
\nhow England had broken its covenant with its colonies
\nwhile gutsy Ezekiel reminds our forebears and us
\nhow we have so frequently shattered our collective covenant
\nembedded in our religious and national traditions
\nto treat all people as created equal with inalienable rights.<\/p>\n

In the 1950\u2019s beat poet Lawrence Ferlinghetti
\npenned a searing indictment of contemporary society.
\nA onetime orphan, who had witness the horrors of war,
\nwho walked the streets of Nagasaki after its nuclear destruction,
\nand wondered if America had lost its soul, wrote<\/a>:<\/p>\n

I am waiting for someone <\/em>
\nto really discover America and wail \u2026<\/em>
\nand I am waiting for the American Eagle <\/em>
\nto really spread its wings and straighten up and fly right <\/em>
\nand I am waiting for the Age of Anxiety to drop dead \u2026 <\/em>
\nand I am perpetually awaiting a rebirth of wonder<\/em><\/p>\n

I am waiting for the Salvation Army to take over <\/em>
\nand I am waiting for the meek to be blessed <\/em>
\nand inherit the earth without taxes <\/em>
\nand I am waiting \u2026to destroy all nationalisms <\/em>
\nwithout killing anybody \u2026<\/em>
\nand I am waiting for \u2026 a new rebirth of wonder<\/em><\/p>\n

I am waiting for the storms of life to be over \u2026 <\/em>
\nand I am waiting for a reconstructed Mayflower <\/em>
\nto reach America with its picture story and tv rights <\/em>
\nsold in advance to the natives <\/em>
\nand I am waiting <\/em>
\nfor the lost music to sound again <\/em>
\nin the Lost Continent in a new rebirth of wonder.<\/em><\/p>\n

While poets have the right to muse and gift for wondering,
\nprophets are further entrusted with a mission.<\/p>\n

At baptism each of us was chrismated priest, prophet, and king
\nas we, or godparents for us, vowed eternal allegiance to Christ
\nand the Jesus Spirit that still broods over this and every nation.<\/p>\n

On this Independence Day,
\nwhen we boast about the many gifts and graces of this country
\nwe also recognize, like Paul, our need to embrace our flaws
\nand, like Ezekiel, to recognize that with shocking regularity
\nwe have broken the covenant of equality and liberty,
\ntoo often out of reach of the marginalized and oppressed,
\nout of reach those who work with their hands
\nor lack a privileged family lineage.<\/p>\n

And so as Catholic-Christians, as nascent public theologians
\nwith a prophetic vision that moves us beyond national boundaries,
\nthis day we sing a beloved tune with a different text,
\npraying that God not only bestow blessing on this land
\nand those whom we might anoint as true Americans,
\nbut upon every land, every nation, every people:<\/p>\n

God bless the world we love,<\/em>
\nStranger and friend,<\/em>
\nGo before us, restore us<\/em>
\nWith a hope that despair cannot end.<\/em>
\nEv\u2019ry people, ev\u2019ry nation,<\/em>
\nMighty ocean, heaven\u2019s dome.<\/em>
\nGod bless the world we love\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/em>

May our honoring of this grand country today
\nnever obscure that sacred gift of interdependence
\ndivinely inscribed in God\u2019s startling declaration we call incarnation
\nand our prophetic mission to embrace
\nthe holy birthright of every human being
\nto live in the freedom of God\u2019s children
\nthrough Christ our Lord.<\/p>\n
