With all of the references to the natural world
\nthat so frequently punctuate the readings –
\nespecially the Gospels –
\nI often wonder if it would have been more beneficial
\nto have studied the natural sciences,
\nor biology,
\nor animal husbandry,
\nor agriculture, rather than
\nall of the philosophy courses I was mandated to take.<\/p>\n

Jesus is continuously talking about the natural world around him:
\nabout foxes and sparrows,
\nmustard trees and lilies,
\nand fig trees and yeast.
\nAnd when he is not sermonizing on these natural phenomena,
\nhe is knee-deep in loaves and fishes,
\nsheep and pigs,
\nand grainfields and seashores.<\/p>\n

Today\u2019s Gospel reminds me how little I know
\nabout horticulture, viniculture and oenology.
\nOh, don\u2019t get me wrong,
\nI do know how to operate a corkscrew,
\ncan distinguish a Malbec from a Shiraz,
\nand even am somewhat skilled at decanting a good wine.<\/p>\n

But consumption is decidedly not the key to this familiar Gospel image
\nof vine and branches,
\nor especially about the process of pruning for bearing fruit,
\nso central to this celebrated pericope.
\nThus, the past week I\u2019ve been reading a lot about pruning
\nand why it is essential for all sorts of plants,
\nbut especially for grapevines<\/p>\n

Surprisingly, some of the folk leading the way here
\nare not vintners
\nnor agriculturalists,
\nbut scientists who specialize in molecular genetics<\/a>
\nand computer modeling.<\/a><\/p>\n

Recently, for example, two collaborating scientists
\nexplained that each shoot tips on a plant
\ncan influence the growth of all others<\/p>\n

Active shoot tips release a specific hormone into the main stem,
\nbut if there is too much of that hormone already in the stem
\nthe weaker shoots can\u2019t get into the game.
\nThe system is clogged;
\nit\u2019s like a crowded main road
\nblocking other vehicles from entering
\nfrom side streets and on-ramps.
\nSo those shoot tips get crowded out, and whither.<\/p>\n

Shoot tips actually compete with each other,
\nwith the strongest branches growing the most vigorously.
\nBut thoughtful pruning levels the playing field,
\nslows the traffic of the stronger branches,
\nand lets all of the inhibited shoot tips back into the game.<\/p>\n

This is an exceedingly important process for grapevines.
\nUnpruned vines grow in wild, unruly ways.
\nThey explode with new branches and cascades of leaves
\nthat leaves few resources needed for the fruit to grow.
\nParallel to this pruning process with grapevines
\nis the need to train the vines.
\nThis means shaping them to grow
\nalong vertical posts or wires
\nand then out onto horizontal wires or trellises
\nso they have more access to sunlight
\nand are easier to prune
\nso to produce more fruit.<\/p>\n

Until my little excursion into pruning this past week
\nI think I overlooked an important aspect of today\u2019s Gospel.
\nWhen I have listened to this passage before,
\nI presumed it was about me being connected to Jesus:
\nhe was the vine, I was a branch
\nand my spiritual task was to stay connected to him.<\/p>\n

Pruning, of course, was part of the spiritual discipline.
\nTo prune myself of attitudes and practices
\nof afflictions and addictions that would prevent me from staying securely grafted
\nonto the vine of Christ.<\/p>\n

What was missing from that vision, however,
\nwas that the pruning and the grafting,
\nthe discipline and the commitment,
\nthe sacrifice and the growing,
\nare not only for my personal spiritual benefit,
\nbut for the sake of the vineyard,
\nfor the sake of the trellis of disciples,
\nfor the sake of the harvest of justice and reconciliation
\nthat is the authentic fruit of being planted in Christ.<\/p>\n

That insight pushed me back into the Gospels
\nto ponder all of those stories
\nin which Christ was pruning his disciples for mission.<\/p>\n

Remember the sons of Zebedee
\nwhose mother tries to secure high positions for them
\nIn Jesus\u2019 kingdom (Matt 20:20)?
\nIn reply Jesus offers a pruning test,
\ninquiring whether they can drink of the cup of suffering,
\nthe cup he struggles with in Gethsemane,
\nbefore himself being splayed on the sacred trellis of the cross.<\/p>\n

Jesus follows up this pruning test with an instruction
\nabout not lording it over each other
\nbut about becoming servants to one another.<\/p>\n

Peter gets publicly pruned a number of times,
\npointedly when Jesus calls him \u201cSatan\u201d
\nafter the prince of apostles rebukes Jesus
\nfor predicting his own death (Matt 16:23).<\/p>\n

And then, more gently
\nat the very end of John\u2019s Gospel
\nwhen Jesus calls Peter\u2019s triple denial
\nby thrice asking him \u201cdo you love me\u201d
\nand reinforcing Peter\u2019s mission to feed others.<\/p>\n

A more cynical approach could suggest
\nthat in such instances
\nPeter got his wings clipped,
\nbut birds with clipped wings can no longer fly
\nand Peter with the other disciples needed to soar
\nin proclaiming the good news after the death of the Lord.<\/p>\n

So I prefer to imagine Peter getting pruned,
\npared-down,
\ncut back,
\nsnipped and shaped and trimmed
\nso that the Gospel, and not just Peter, would bear much fruit<\/p>\n

I imagine that is also what happened to St. Paul
\nwho got knocked off his high horse
\nbut not decimated in his encounter with the Risen One.<\/p>\n

The Lord needed Paul for the sake of so many communities –
\nthe Corinthians, the Ephesians, the Galatians –
\nso the Holy Spirit did some serious pruning
\nso that Christianity itself could be birth and bear fruit.<\/p>\n

You and I have probably had parallel experiences
\nof being cut back, sheared, diminished, and abridged.
\nSome of those moments, even from decades ago, stay with us:
\nthe rebuke from a teacher or coach by
\nnot getting the scholarship or making the team.
\nThere are scores of these stories on the internet
\nthat continue to simmer in so many souls<\/p>\n

Sometimes the pruning is destructive, even abusive.
\nI remember a section from Dr. Damon Tweedy\u2019s
\nBlack man in a White Coat. <\/em>[1]
\nthat share the reflections of an African American Doctor
\nand his journey through medical school, residency, and practice.<\/p>\n

From a working-class family with only a public education,
\nTweedy was accepted
\ninto the prestigious medical school at Duke University<\/p>\n

He tells the story of being in a large lecture class
\nand during a break in the lecture
\nwhile students were milling about
\nthe professor, who seldom if ever spoke to students,
\nmade a b-line for Tweedy and asked
\n\u201cAre you here to fix the lights?\u201d<\/p>\n

When Tweedy didn\u2019t understand the inquiry,
\nthe professor pointed to one section of the lecture hall
\nwhere the lights were noticeably low.<\/p>\n

And so he asked again, so you going to fix the lights.
\nWhen Tweedy said \u201cno\u201d,
\nthe Professor then asked,
\n\u201cThen what are you doing in my class?\u201d
\n\u201cI\u2019m a student in your class,\u201d Tweedy responded<\/p>\n

This prompted the irritated professor to turn without a word
\nand return to the front of the room
\nslamming the door on the dignity of a promising student
\njudged worthy of only being part of a maintenance staff
\nbecause of the color of his skin.<\/p>\n

That, in my estimation, was not pruning but professorial abuse
\nand the litmus test for distinguishing between the two
\ncomes to us from today\u2019s second reading, that is,
\nwhether the pruning is motivated by love.<\/p>\n

While scars from past diminishments inflicted by others abound,
\nmaybe part of the hidden spirituality of today\u2019s Gospel
\ntouches our own self-diminishment.
\nSome of us are growing older,
\nsome of us are becoming sicker,
\nsome of us are moving past our intellectual
\nor physical prime.
\nAs our employability abates,
\nour abilities to play the game with the same vigor recedes
\nand our leadership skills start to atrophy.
\nWe become aware that nature itself is pruning us
\nand we have little apparent control over such declines.<\/p>\n

On the other hand, we do have control
\nover how we respond to this natural ebbing of mind & body,
\nover whether or not we allow ourselves to be pared back –
\nin a spirit of generosity – so that our families,
\nour friends and our community can bear new fruit,
\nor whether we hold on tightly,
\nforcing others to compete for the energy,
\nthe light,
\nand the love we crave to absorb.<\/p>\n

I have two great friends, long-married,
\nwho pondered diminishment as they wrote about
\nthe spirituality of marriage.
\nIn a veiled autobiographical way,
\nthey chart the stages of marriage over many decades.
\nThe last stage is what they call \u201cdevotion.\u201d<\/p>\n

They write:
\nIn time, the shape of aging love earns the name of devotion. Devotion is the enfleshed affection that survives illness and aging and enjoys growing old together. The ancient author Plutarch (d. 120 AD) wrote: \u201cthe love for a virtuous woman suffers no autumn but flourishes even with grey hair and wrinkles.\u201d By this point child-rearing is long gone, active careers are over, the couple\u2019s love becomes an affection nuanced by the awareness of final days, of threatening illness. Such devotion might be called eros with wrinkles.\u00a0<\/em>[2]<\/p>\n

Nature prunes us all, at one stage or another.
\nThe example of Jesus, radically pruned on Golgotha
\ninvites us into the unlikely spiritual practice of diminishment:
\nthe devotion of stepping aside so that others might flourish,
\ntrimmed back so that others might have more sunlight,
\nreceding to the margins so that others
\nmight more easily claim the center.<\/p>\n

And so, with the poet we muse
\nthere are moments when the veil seems
\nalmost to lift, and we understand what
\nthe earth is meant to mean to us \u2014 the
\ntrees in their docility, the hills in
\ntheir patience, the flowers and the
\nvines in their wild, sweet vitality.
\nThen the Word is within us, and the
\nBook is put away. [3]<\/p>\n

Today we pray that the veil might lift a bit
\nand Jesus’ Word might truly be in us,
\neternally connecting us to the vine
\nwhose Gospel prunes us only for generously
\nhelping others bear fruit in a rich kingdom harvest
\nthrough Christ our Lord.<\/p>\n
