{"id":54677,"date":"2021-02-16T16:23:21","date_gmt":"2021-02-16T22:23:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/?p=54677"},"modified":"2021-02-27T10:30:13","modified_gmt":"2021-02-27T16:30:13","slug":"more-revisions-to-1962-extraordinary-form-roman-missal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/index.php\/2021\/02\/16\/more-revisions-to-1962-extraordinary-form-roman-missal\/","title":{"rendered":"More Revisions to 1962 Extraordinary Form Roman Missal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Pray Tell<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/index.php\/2021\/02\/02\/pope-adds-memorial-mary-martha-and-lazarus-to-calendar\/\">reported<\/a> earlier this month how Pope Francis issued a Decree to add the memorial of Mary, Martha, and Lazarus to General Roman Calendar and also add new optional memorials of Hildegard, Gregory of Narek, and John of Avila.<\/p>\n<p>Gloria.tv, a \u201cnon-profit international Catholic social network and a video \/ news sharing platform \u2026 that is not directly connected to the hierarchy of the Catholic Church\u201d \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gloria.tv\/post\/K9D8a9kaTnWF1byDLkhJV9uqz\">reported<\/a>\u00a0yesterday that in the latest <em>Ordo Divini Officii Recitandi Sacrique Peragendi 2021<\/em>, published by the Libreria Editrice Vaticana, some other observances that had been abolished prior to the John XXIII edition of the Roman Missal of 1962 that is normative for the Extraordinary Form liturgies, have been reinstated \u201cas an option.\u201d These include the \u201cFeast of the Seven Sorrows of Our Lady, Feast of the Finding of the Holy Cross (May 3rd), Feast of St John Before the Latin Gate (May 6th), Feast of the Apparition of St Michael (May 8th), Feast of the Finding of the Body of St Stephen (August 3rd), Holy Maccabees and St Peter in Chains (August 1st).\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, Gloria.tv reports that the new <em>Ordo<\/em> \u201callows the Corpus Christi Octave in some form where the devotion exists. In Septuagesima and Lent, the \u2018Benedicamus Domino\u2019 can be used instead of the \u2018Ite Missa est,\u2019 and the Preface of the Nativity has been restored to the feast of the Transfiguration.\u201d Some photographs of the relevant pages of the <em>Ordo <\/em>can be seen in photographs linked to the report.<\/p>\n<p>It is interesting to note that there is still a tendency <a href=\"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/index.php\/2018\/03\/29\/pick-a-century-game\/\">to promote pre-1962 observances and practices in the Extraordinary Form<\/a>. While obviously there is nothing wrong with these newly reinstated observances, I wonder if we are losing sight of our liturgical seasons by allowing nearly every day to have some observance or other in both Forms of the Roman Rite.<\/p>\n<p>One of the head librarians of a university I know has a policy for academic periodicals that might be interesting for us to consider in our liturgical calendar. He allows any academic department to add any new periodical subscription that they might like, however, for every new subscription they must cancel two existing ones.<\/p>\n<p>In the history of the calendar periodically there are renewals when many feast days are removed from the calendar. Then gradually feasts are added again until the calendar is overburdened again and needs parring down once more. Maybe if every time a new observance is added another existing one is removed, this could allow the Universal Roman Calendar to retain the preeminence of the liturgical seasons. This would help fulfill the wish of Vatican II, which warns \u201clest the feasts of the saints should take precedence over the feasts which commemorate the very mysteries of salvation, many of them should be left to be celebrated by a particular Church or nation or family of religious; only those should be extended to the universal Church which commemorate saints who are truly of universal importance\u201d (<em>SC<\/em> 111).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Pray Tell reported earlier this month how Pope Francis issued a Decree to add the memorial of Mary, Martha, and Lazarus to General Roman Calendar and also add new optional memorials of Hildegard, Gregory of Narek, and John of Avila. He is a presbyter of the Archdiocese of Newark, NJ who has ministered in parishes on both sides of the Atlantic. He has spent many years as an academic mentor to seminarians. Neil currently serves as Programme Director for Liturgical Programmes at the Pontifical University and as Acting Director of the National Centre for Liturgy. Since 2020 he has also served as the Executive Secretary for Liturgy to the Irish Catholic Bishops Conference. He has studied at Seton Hall University (BA, MDiv), the University of Notre Dame (MA), and St Vladimir\u2019s Orthodox Theological Seminary (MTh). He holds a Doctorate in Theology (Ph.D.) from St Patrick\u2019s College, Maynooth and is in the process of completing a second doctorate (D.D) in the Pontifical Facultad de Teolog\u00eda Redemptoris Mater in Callao, Peru. Neil has published a translation of the Confessio of St. Patrick: St. Patrick: His Confession and Other Works (Totowa, NJ, 2009), as well editing the third edition of Fredrick Edward Warren\u2019s The Liturgy and Ritual of the Celtic Church (Piscataway, NJ, 2010). In 2011 the University of Notre Dame Press published The Eucharist in Pre-Norman Ireland an adaptation of his doctoral thesis and in 2017 the Alcuin Club published his Liturgical Orientation: The Position of the President at the Eucharist. His articles have appeared in The Irish Theological Quarterly, New Blackfriars, The Furrow and Antiphon.
