Yet because of the lockdowns due to the Coronavirus, this year there will be no public liturgies to mark Ash Wednesday in Ireland this year.\u00a0 While <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pillarcatholic.com\/p\/sprinkling-and-tracing-an-ash-wednesday\">others debate the merits of ashes being imposed on the forehead or the crown of the head<\/a>, here in the Emerald Isle, as in other parts of the world, we will simply not be able to gather together.<\/p>\n<p>Yet this has given rise to a certain creativity. One parish in County Cork has organized a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishexaminer.com\/news\/munster\/arid-40226627.html\">US-style Ash Wednesday \u2018drive-through<\/a>.\u2019\u201d The BBC is also reporting that in County Donegal \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-europe-56074495\">takeaway Ashes<\/a>\u201d are being offered. Here the local Centra supermarket has helped to package the ashes in plastic containers that usually contain the sauce for takeaway (or fast food) meals.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.trocaire.org\/\">Tr\u00f3caire<\/a><\/em>, the official overseas development agency of the Catholic Church in Ireland (the Irish version of Caritas) is facing a huge fundraising challenge as all schools are closed and normally <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishexaminer.com\/news\/arid-40227776.html\">a third of their annual budget<\/a> comes from collection boxes that nearly every child in the nation receives through the Catholic primary school network. The\u00a0<i>Tr\u00f3caire\u00a0<\/i>box is a sure sign of Lent in many Irish households. Indeed some of the legendary &#8220;Irish Mammys&#8221; enforced a penalty of a mandatory donation to the box every time someone used <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishmirror.ie\/lifestyle\/health\/top-10-things-irish-people-9932677\">bad language or swore<\/a> in the house during Lent.<\/p>\n<p>Archbishop Eamon Martin of Armagh, the Roman Catholic Primate of All Ireland, today released a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.catholicbishops.ie\/2021\/02\/16\/faith-hope-and-love-lent-in-a-time-of-pandemic-archbishop-eamon-martin\/\">message<\/a> to Irish families encouraging them \u201cto pray together, fast and be generous this Lent.\u201d He also \u201claunched the #LivingLent initiative on Twitter and Instagram for Lent 2021. #LivingLent invites the faithful to use social media to grow closer to God during this sacred season.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But as we face this most unusual Ash Wednesday, the fundamentals of the Christian call to Prayer, Fasting and Abstinence remains possible to all Christians whether or not they have received ashes or not.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ash Wednesday is still popular in Ireland. \u00a0As rates of practice have dropped in recent years, many people still make a point of getting ashes on this day. He has studied at Seton Hall University (BA, MDiv), the University of Notre Dame (MA), and St Vladimir\u2019s Orthodox Theological Seminary (MTh). He holds a Doctorate in Theology (Ph.D.) from St Patrick\u2019s College, Maynooth and is in the process of completing a second doctorate (D.D) in the Pontifical Facultad de Teolog\u00eda Redemptoris Mater in Callao, Peru. Neil has published a translation of the Confessio of St. Patrick: St. Patrick: His Confession and Other Works (Totowa, NJ, 2009), as well editing the third edition of Fredrick Edward Warren\u2019s The Liturgy and Ritual of the Celtic Church (Piscataway, NJ, 2010). In 2011 the University of Notre Dame Press published The Eucharist in Pre-Norman Ireland an adaptation of his doctoral thesis and in 2017 the Alcuin Club published his Liturgical Orientation: The Position of the President at the Eucharist. His articles have appeared in The Irish Theological Quarterly, New Blackfriars, The Furrow and Antiphon.
