I readily admit that I am a Mac addict and at times I think I am more successful in converting people to the Apple ecosystem from the Windows than sharing the Good News of Jesus Christ (but I take solace in Umberto Eco’s famous\u00a0proposal<\/a> that Mac was the Catholic computer). So I don\u2019t just look at liturgy blogs. This can lead to some interesting cross-pollination in my liturgical musings.<\/p>\n

Today I saw an interesting example of the value of relics on MacRumors. The post is entitled Original Apple I Piece Used in Caviar’s $10,000 Limited-Edition iPhone 12 Pro<\/a> <\/em>Here we are told that the Russian luxury accessory firm Caviar<\/a> has created a case for the latest iPhones that start at $10,000 each (this is the base model, more expensive luxury versions are available).<\/p>\n

One of the reasons for the high price tag is that Caviar have laid their hands on one of the original Apple I computers. These computers were made in 1976 and only 63 of these are known to exist and \u201cthey have been known to fetch around $400,000 at auction.\u201d The computer has been broken up and \u201ca fragment of the circuitry of the first personal computer in the world – Apple 1\u201d has been incorporated into the iPhone case.<\/p>\n

Less wealthy readers might be reassured to know that a cheaper cover is also available starting at a paltry $6,490. This \u201ckey element\u201d of the budget case<\/a> \u201cis an Apple logo of aviation titanium with a piece of the original legendary Steve Jobs\u2019 turtleneck.\u201d<\/p>\n

On a very real level this luxury is in a good example of Pope Francis\u2019 warning in Fratellli Tutti<\/em> that \u201cpersons are no longer seen as a paramount value to be cared for and respected, especially when they are poor and disabled, \u2018not yet useful\u2019 \u2013 like the unborn, or \u2018no longer needed\u2019 \u2013 like the elderly. We have grown indifferent to all kinds of wastefulness, starting with the waste of food, which is deplorable in the extreme.\u201d\u00a0 Nonetheless I think that the desire to have a \u201crelic\u201d of the original Apple computer, or even a \u201cthird-class relic\u201d of Steve Jobs\u00a0also points to the need humanity still has a need for physical contact with those who have gone before us and even physical contact with our saints in the form of relics.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"

He has studied at Seton Hall University (BA, MDiv), the University of Notre Dame (MA), and St Vladimir\u2019s Orthodox Theological Seminary (MTh). He holds a Doctorate in Theology (Ph.D.) from St Patrick\u2019s College, Maynooth and is in the process of completing a second doctorate (D.D) in the Pontifical Facultad de Teolog\u00eda Redemptoris Mater in Callao, Peru. Neil has published a translation of the Confessio of St. Patrick: St. Patrick: His Confession and Other Works (Totowa, NJ, 2009), as well editing the third edition of Fredrick Edward Warren\u2019s The Liturgy and Ritual of the Celtic Church (Piscataway, NJ, 2010). In 2011 the University of Notre Dame Press published The Eucharist in Pre-Norman Ireland an adaptation of his doctoral thesis and in 2017 the Alcuin Club published his Liturgical Orientation: The Position of the President at the Eucharist. His articles have appeared in The Irish Theological Quarterly, New Blackfriars, The Furrow and Antiphon.
