In this message he stresses the need for everybody\u2019s inclusion in the Church and the importance of active participation.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"Default\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">In the midst of the different debates and concerns we have for church services over Christmas and a host of other COVID-19 related challenges, we should also take time for an Advent examination of conscience, remembering the words of Christ, \u201c<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">Amen I say to you, in so far as you did this to one of the least of these brothers or sisters of mine, you did it to me\u201d (Mt 25:40 RNJB).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>This is the section of the letter that deals with liturgical concerns:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<div>\n<p><i>The \u201crock\u201d of active participation<\/i><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>To help our society to \u201c<i>build back better<\/i>\u201d, inclusion of the vulnerable must also entail efforts to promote their<span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><i>\u00a0<\/i><\/span><i>active participation<\/i>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Before all else, I strongly reaffirm the right of persons with disabilities to<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><i>receive the sacraments<\/i>, like all other members of the Church. All liturgical celebrations in the parish should be accessible to them, so that, together with their brothers and sisters, each of them can deepen, celebrate, and live their faith. Special attention should be paid to people with disabilities who have not yet received the sacraments of Christian initiation: they should be welcomed and included in programmes of catechesis in preparation for these sacraments. No one should be excluded from the grace of these sacraments.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cIn virtue of their baptism, all the members of the People of God have become missionary disciples. All the baptized, whatever their position in the Church or their level of instruction in the faith, are agents of evangelization\u201d (<i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/content\/francesco\/en\/apost_exhortations\/documents\/papa-francesco_esortazione-ap_20131124_evangelii-gaudium.html#We_are_all_missionary_disciples\">Evangelii Gaudium<\/a><\/i>, 120). People with disabilities, both in society and in the Church, also wish to become<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><i>active subjects<\/i><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>of our pastoral ministry, and not simply its recipients. \u201cMany persons with disabilities feel that they exist without belonging and without participating. Much still prevents them from being fully enfranchised. Our concern should be not only to care for them, but also to ensure their \u2018active participation\u2019 in the civil and ecclesial community. That is a demanding and even tiring process, yet one that will gradually contribute to the formation of consciences capable of acknowledging each individual as a unique and unrepeatable person\u201d (<i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/content\/francesco\/en\/encyclicals\/documents\/papa-francesco_20201003_enciclica-fratelli-tutti.html#98\">Fratelli Tutti<\/a><\/i>, 98). Indeed, the active participation of people with disabilities in the work of catechesis can greatly enrich the life of the whole parish. Precisely because they have been grafted onto Christ in baptism, they share with him, in their own particular way, the priestly, prophetic, and royal mission of evangelizing<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><i>through, with<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/i>and<span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><i>\u00a0<\/i><\/span><i>in<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/i>the Church.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Yesterday Pope Francis released a Message for the International Day of Persons with Disabilities. In 2011 the University of Notre Dame Press published The Eucharist in Pre-Norman Ireland an adaptation of his doctoral thesis and in 2017 the Alcuin Club published his Liturgical Orientation: The Position of the President at the Eucharist. His articles have appeared in The Irish Theological Quarterly, New Blackfriars, The Furrow and Antiphon. He is a presbyter of the Archdiocese of Newark, NJ who has ministered in parishes on both sides of the Atlantic. He has spent many years as an academic mentor to seminarians. Neil currently serves as Programme Director for Liturgical Programmes at the Pontifical University and as Acting Director of the National Centre for Liturgy. Since 2020 he has also served as the Executive Secretary for Liturgy to the Irish Catholic Bishops Conference. He has studied at Seton Hall University (BA, MDiv), the University of Notre Dame (MA), and St Vladimir\u2019s Orthodox Theological Seminary (MTh). He holds a Doctorate in Theology (Ph.D.) from St Patrick\u2019s College, Maynooth and is in the process of completing a second doctorate (D.D) in the Pontifical Facultad de Teolog\u00eda Redemptoris Mater in Callao, Peru. Neil has published a translation of the Confessio of St. Patrick: St. Patrick: His Confession and Other Works (Totowa, NJ, 2009), as well editing the third edition of Fredrick Edward Warren\u2019s The Liturgy and Ritual of the Celtic Church (Piscataway, NJ, 2010). In 2011 the University of Notre Dame Press published The Eucharist in Pre-Norman Ireland an adaptation of his doctoral thesis and in 2017 the Alcuin Club published his Liturgical Orientation: The Position of the President at the Eucharist. His articles have appeared in The Irish Theological Quarterly, New Blackfriars, The Furrow and Antiphon.
