As part of a current project
\nI am doing a lot of reading about scientists,
\nincluding a new biography of Galileo,
\nGalileo: Science Deniers<\/em> by Mario Livio.<\/p>\n

Unlike virtually all others,
\nthis one is actually written by an astrophysicist
\nwho not only understands the significance
\nof his many astronomical findings,
\nbut even more, comprehends and emphasizes
\nhis revolutionary scientific methods.<\/p>\n

The other unique aspect of historical work
\nis the way the author connects Galileo\u2019s struggle
\nto change the accepted ways of thinking and believing
\nwith parallel struggles today, e.g., around climate change.<\/p>\n

Despite the uphill battles he faced in his own day,
\neven found vehemently suspect of heresy by the Church,
\nand living the last 9 years of his life under house arrest,
\nGalileo was hailed as the Columbus of the heavens
\nfor his many astronomical discoveries.<\/p>\n

One contemporary wrote:
\n\u201cColumbus gave man
\nlands to conquer by bloodshed,
\nGalileo new worlds harmful to none.\u201d (p. 91)<\/p>\n

The 20th\u00a0century philosopher Thomas Kuhn<\/a> coined the phrase
\n\u201cparadigm shift\u201d to explain this kind of scientific revolution.
\nSuch a shift topples the prevailing thinking on a topic
\nand supplants it with a strikingly different position,
\nprompting change across multiple disciplines and terrains.<\/p>\n

I was thinking about the Columbus of the heavens,
\nrevolutions in thinking and acting and even believing,
\nin the midst of this frustrating, even overwhelming pandemic.<\/p>\n

Whether we like it or not,
\nthis global health challenge has triggered fundamental changes
\nin so many aspects of our world and our lives<\/p>\n

For example, while telehealth or telemedicine is not new,
\nand has especially been employed in bringing medical care
\nto remote regions,
\nits usage during the pandemic has recently surged<\/a>,
\nestablishing it now as an ordinary health tool
\nnot limited to places like the arctic circle.<\/p>\n

If a pandemic can trigger paradigm shifts in business and medicine,
\neducation and politics,
\nit can do the same for worship and even theology.<\/p>\n

Think about live-streaming.<\/p>\n

This past summer I presided<\/a>
\nfor the feast of Blessed Solanus in Detroit.
\nOn an average year there might be
\n1,000 folk who would attend the novena leading to the feast.
\nAnd maybe 1,500 at the three Masses on the feast itself.<\/p>\n

This year there were c. 12,000 digital participants in the feast.
\nAnd a total of almost 40,000 of those who joined
\nin some aspect of the feast and novena.
\nOur celebrations of Solanus will never be the same.<\/p>\n

Besides the technological changes triggered by the pandemic,
\nI also believe this global health crisis
\nshapes the content of our worship and believing.<\/p>\n

When I look back on my previous preaching on this feast,
\nor the multiple commentaries guiding such preaching,
\nthere is an overwhelming emphasis on our call to holiness:
\nrecalling not only metaphorical 144,000
\nmentioned in the first reading,
\nbut also calling us to acknowledge
\nthe blessedness that surrounds us daily
\nand to ourselves become holy.<\/p>\n

While I believe such an approach is valid,
\nit does not strike me as either timely or appropriate
\nin midst of this difficult and anxious health crisis,
\nexacerbated by a deeply polarizing election.<\/p>\n

In previous years, reflections on today\u2019s gospel
\nsparked images of the peacemakers, the merciful, the meek
\nwho had graced our history or crossed my personal path,
\nin order to reignite my own erratic spiritual journey.<\/p>\n

However, when I read Matthew\u2019s beatitudes today,
\nI wonder about the blessedness of the meek
\nwhose concerns are drowned out by bullies and the boisterous
\nand whose dignity often has no advocate.
\nI wonder about the blessedness of the persecuted
\nscientists and civic leaders trying to protect our health,
\nswept aside by those claiming the priority of personal liberty
\nand erasing the common good.<\/p>\n

I wonder about the blessedness of those who hunger and thirst
\nnot just for righteousness,
\nbut in these days
\nof such high unemployment and underemployment,
\nthe children, the elderly, the families,
\nwho actually hunger and thirst around meager tables,
\nwith depleted pantries and empty wallets.<\/p>\n

Most of all, however, I wonder about
\nthe blessedness of those who mourn,
\nmourn not the mythic 144,000,
\nor even the very real 235,000 Covid deaths in the U.S.,
\nbut the 1.2 million sisters and brothers around the globe
\nwho have succumbed to this virus.<\/p>\n

I think of those who mourn from afar,
\nnot able to hold the hand or kiss the brow
\nof the parent or spouse as they journey back to God.<\/p>\n

I think of the health care workers,
\noverwhelmed not only medically but emotionally
\nas they become the surrogate family
\nof those in ICUs and on ventilators.<\/p>\n

And I think of those who mourn,
\ndeprived of the solace of a traditional wake or funeral,
\ndeprived of the ritual comfort of song, word and ceremony.<\/p>\n

As I ponder those, in the words of Nathan Mitchell\u2019s prayer,
\nwho die alone, unloved, unmourned every day on this planet.
\nThis feast becomes newly poignant, even difficult, for me.<\/p>\n

The gifted pastoral theologian Herbert Anderson
\ncoauthored a classic book on death: All our Losses, All our Griefs.<\/em><\/p>\n

Anderson believes that the work of grieving
\nhappens between remembering and hoping,
\nbetween building a treasured memory
\nand anticipating a new future.<\/p>\n

Grieving can be understood as both a very human act
\nand an exercise of faith.<\/p>\n

From the viewpoint of human development,
\ngrieving is an attempt to fill in a gap,
\nto reconstruct an individual or family life
\nin the felt absence of a loved one.<\/p>\n

How that occurs is different for each of us,
\nfor the gap is unique,
\nthe loss distinctive,
\nthe feelings particular.<\/p>\n

But it is also an act of faith \u2013
\nas remembering and hoping in Jesus\u2019 death and resurrection
\nis at the core of our belief.<\/p>\n

A few years ago I preached at the funeral
\nafter the sudden death of a friend.
\nThe only daughter grieved publicly
\nthat the \u201cgrand twins\u201d would soon forget their grandfather
\nwho spent so much time caring for them
\nin their first two years of life.<\/p>\n

There is no doubt that the grandfather could be forgotten
\nif the loving memory work is abandoned.
\nOn the other hand, when that work is done,
\nsuch a memory not only brings consolation, but even joy.<\/p>\n

And while that might sound a little mad \u2026 maybe crazy,
\nsuggesting that there could be joy
\nits own kind of blessedness in the process of mourning,
\nI contend that is exactly what the gospels are and do.<\/p>\n

We call them good news: such a source of hope and joy
\nthat we constantly sing \u201cAlleluia\u201d before we read them.<\/p>\n

On the other hand, we can consider the gospels
\nas seriously inspired memory building,
\ngrief work by a community who had lost their beloved Lord.<\/p>\n

So the communities of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John
\neach created an enduring and living memory of Jesus
\nthat recalled his gifts and some of his rants,
\nwoven into a life giving memory
\nand enduring legacy of hope.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s been almost 20 years since my father died.
\nHe was an avid and accomplished barbershopper,
\nhaving won numerous international gold medals,
\nsung at Carnegie Hall, and even offered a Broadway musical.<\/p>\n

When his dear friend and favorite quartet member died,
\nDad stood next to the coffin, blew his pitch pipe,
\nwaited a moment,
\nand then said that he knew that Ben must be dead,
\nbecause he didn\u2019t get up to sing.
\nDad asked us to perform that ritual for him as well.
\nAnd so, before we buried him,
\nhis children took the pitch pipe from his hand,
\nagreed on the pitch, and blew.<\/p>\n

We could not hear him sing back,
\nand knew that he was gone from us,
\nso we put the pitch pipe back in his hands,
\nand made our farewell.<\/p>\n

But while he did not sing back to us,
\nwe did not believe that his song was over,
\nbut believed with all our hearts
\nthat it was transformed into the song of God.<\/p>\n

Writing about the death of a friend, the poet, Mark Doty, wrote:<\/p>\n

\u201cI believe with all my heart that when the chariot came for him, green and gold and rose, a band of angels swung wide out over the great flanks of the sea, bearing him up over the path of light [that] the sun makes on the face of the waters.\u00a0 I believe my love is in the Jordan, which is deep and wide and welcoming, though it scours us oh so deeply.\u00a0 And when he gets to the other side, I know he will be dressed in robes of comfort and gladness, his forehead will be anointed with spices, and he will sing — joyfully — into the future, and back toward the darkness of this world.\u201d<\/p>\n

I believe with all my heart that our beloved dead,
\nthis unexpected expansion of the communion of saints,
\nare now learning the song of the Lamb
\nand are singing back towards the darkness of this world.<\/p>\n

But in order to hear them, we need to give them back to God,
\nto commend them to the chorus of the 144,000,
\nwhich some of us may not have been able to do properly.<\/p>\n

Lord our God, Receive your servant,
\nLord our God, Receive your servant,
\nFor whom you shed your blood,
\nYou shed your blood.
\n\u00a0 \u00a0 (John Bell, \u201cLord Our God, Receive Your Servant\u201d [GIA Publications, 1996])<\/span><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

And so we invoke those powerful words of our funeral liturgy,
\nits final commendation
\nthat so many were deprived of experiencing,
\nin these days when even death requires social distancing,<\/p>\n

As we pray:<\/p>\n

Into your hands, Father of mercies,
\nwe commend our [sisters and brothers whom you have called
\nto yourself in this time of \u2018great distress,\u2019
\nin the sure and certain hope
\nthat together with all who have died with Christ
\nespecially those who died alone, unloved and unmourned,
\nwill rise with him on the last day.<\/p>\n

Lord our God, Receive your servant,
\n<\/span>Lord our God, Receive your servant,
\n<\/span>For whom you shed your blood,
\n<\/span>You shed your blood.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Merciful Lord,
\nturn toward us and listen to our prayers;
\n0pen the gates of paradise to your servants,
\ncount them among the blessed 144,000,
\nand help those of us who remain
\nto comfort one another with assurances of faith,
\nuntil we all meet in Christ
\nand are with you and our beloved forever and ever.<\/p>\n
