In<\/span>to<\/span> this season of <\/span>extreme electioneering,
\n<\/span>contentious <\/span>hearings on a supreme court nominee,
\n<\/span>and<\/span> challenges to our democratic <\/span>process <\/span>on so many levels,<\/span><\/p>\n

Jesus emerges in today\u2019s gospel
\nas a kind of public theologian:
\nnot a politician but a religious leader who has plenty to say
\nabout public ethics and morality,
\nabout communal equity and justice,
\nabout the leadership of his own faith community
\nand that of his homeland.<\/p>\n

Jesus\u2019 <\/span>pattern of speaking and acting<\/span>,
\n<\/span>will eventually bring him face to face
\n<\/span>with Caesar\u2019s <\/span>personal <\/span>representative
\n<\/span>that will <\/span>end with <\/span>Jesus\u2019<\/span> public execution
\n<\/span>as an enemy of the state
\n<\/span>and a victim of religious intolerance.<\/span><\/p>\n

L<\/span>ike every other action of a public figure
\n<\/span>today\u2019s <\/span>brief narrative about Jesus needs to be put in context.
\n<\/span><\/span>(Some of what follows is reliant upon the work of D. Mark Davis.)<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n

In the previous chapter of Matthew (<\/span>ch. 21),
\n<\/span>Jesus entered Jerusalem with great fanfare
\n<\/span>g<\/span>reeted with cries of \u201chosanna\u201d <\/span>a<\/span>nd <\/span>rumors of kingship
\n<\/span>that we recall each Palm Sunday.<\/span><\/p>\n

This return visit to Jerusalem ha<\/span>d<\/span> been tumultuous,
\n<\/span>including his <\/span>overturning of the money changers tables
\n<\/span>followed by <\/span>a series of pointed parables
\n<\/span>that we <\/span>have <\/span>heard over the past few weeks
\n<\/span>not very <\/span>subtly<\/span> <\/span>aimed at<\/span> <\/span>Temple leadership<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

In response to this targeting
\n<\/span>the leadership sets up a trap for Jesus<\/span>.<\/span>
\n<\/span>The<\/span> <\/span>desperation<\/span> of <\/span>these leaders<\/span> <\/span>clearly <\/span>in Jesus\u2019 crosshairs
\n<\/span>is underscored by the <\/span>unusual tactic<\/span> they contrive,
\n<\/span>sending a cohort of <\/span>political <\/span>rivals<\/span>,
\n<\/span>Pharisees and Herodians<\/span>,
\n<\/span>to trick Jesus <\/span>either <\/span>into <\/span>insult<\/span>ing<\/span> <\/span>civic leadership,
\n<\/span>thus <\/span>an act of sedition,
\n<\/span>or <\/span>into <\/span>offend<\/span>ing<\/span> religious <\/span>teaching,
\n<\/span>which would be <\/span>blasphemy<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

While we do not know who Jesus\u2019 debate coach was,
\nwhoever it was \u2013 probably the Holy Spirit \u2013
\nprepared him well,
\nand his evasive response deftly avoids this twin-jawed trap.<\/p>\n

Living between the demands of civic government and religion,
\n<\/span>between law and justice,<\/span> is not easy.<\/span><\/p>\n

A favorite illustration for walking this tightrope
\nis reported of the former mayor of New York<\/a>
\nFiorello LaGuardia, who led that city
\nduring of Great Depression and World War II.<\/p>\n

This 5\u20192\u201d political giant <\/span>o<\/span>nce visited a night court
\n<\/span>in one of the poorest wards
\n<\/span>and sent the judge home and took over the bench<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Soon a poor elderly woman was brought before him,
\ncharged with stealing a loaf of bread.
\nShe told LaGuardia that her son-in-law had deserted them,
\nher daughter was sick, and grandchildren starving<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

The shopkeeper, however, refused to drop the charges.
\nHe demanded she be punished to teach others a lesson.<\/p>\n

LaGuardia sighed and said to the woman \u201cI\u2019ve got to punish you.
\nThe law makes no exceptions.
\nTen dollars or ten days in jail.\u201d<\/p>\n

But as he pronounced the sentence,
\nhe reached into his pocket and extracted a bill, saying,
\n\u201cHere is the ten dollar fine which I now remit;
\nand furthermore, I am going to fine everyone in this courtroom
\nfifty cents for living in a town where a person has to steal bread
\nso that her grandchildren can eat.
\nMr. Bailiff, collect the fines and give them to the defendant.\u201d<\/p>\n

New York newspapers reported
\nthat $47.50 was soon turned over to the bewildered woman.
\nFifty cents of that amount was contributed
\nby the grocery store owner himself,
\nwhile some seventy petty criminals,
\npeople with traffic violations,
\nand New York City policemen,
\neach of whom had just paid fifty centers
\nfor the privilege of doing so, gave the mayor a standing ovation.<\/p>\n

If only living what Vatican II calls our dual citizenship:
\ncitizens both of this world and also members of God\u2019s reign,
\nwas that easily resolved \u2026
\n(Gaudium et Spes, <\/em>no. 43.)<\/p>\n

Unfortunately, however, living in a hyper-politicized environment
\nin which truth and honesty are now serial victims,
\nand demeaning discourse and deceptive media tactics
\ncrowd out the prudent and gracious,
\nsuch resolution seems difficult.<\/span><\/p>\n

Quite frankly, given the appearance of this gospel
\nin the midst of such a heated election season,
\nit can be at least disappointing if not downright distressing
\nthat Jesus himself doesn\u2019t seem to give much direction.<\/p>\n

Given his ingenious answer, one could surmise
\nthat the politically astute Jesus
\ndid a brilliant job of fence-riding in his interrogation.<\/span><\/p>\n

But while this evasion tactic allows Jesus to steer clear
\nboth of charges of sedition and blasphemy,
\nit can appear to leave his followers
\nwith no perceptible moral compass
\nfor navigating between citizenship in this world
\nand God\u2019s holy reign.<\/p>\n

But then again \u2026 maybe Jesus does teach us something profound
\nthat may have eluded us at first hearing.<\/p>\n

In 1982 two political activists – Ray Ransberger and Marshall Fritz –
\ncreated a debate strategy now known as the Ransberger pivot.
\nIt is a strategy in which a speaker attempts to find common ground
\nwith their \u201copponents.\u201d<\/p>\n

I doubt whether Jesus was well versed in this debate strategy,
\nbut he does achieve an interesting pivot,
\nturning the whole issue of paying taxes on its head.<\/p>\n

So we return to the scene of the debate:
\nJesus is in the temple precincts.
\n<\/span>He is publicly engaged by a group of Herodians and Pharisees
\n<\/span>who <\/span>flatter their way into the conversation with Jesus
\n<\/span>by <\/span>affirming that he is both honest and godly.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

Then they spring the double-bladed trap
\nhoping to force Jesus into either aligning with Rome
\nor aligning with Jewish law.<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s where Jesus engineers an inspired pivot:
\nhe asks them for a coin and they give him a piece of silver
\nbearing the image of a Roman emperor.<\/span><\/p>\n

And this pivot springs a theological embarrassment on his foes,
\nfor in possessing such a coin
\nthey committed sacrilege on the temple precincts
\nsince the Mosaic commandments
\nprohibit \u201cgraven images\u201d in any form.<\/p>\n

In reflecting on this gospel,
\none helpful blogger does his own surprising pivot
\nthat revolves around the design of money<\/a>.<\/p>\n

This preacher first examines the images on money today.
\nStarting with the Euro which is designed around
\nEuropean architectural periods:
\nthe 5 Euro is classical Greece,
\nthe 10 Euro is Romanesque,
\nand the 20 is Gothic.<\/p>\n

He notes that when you have a 50 euro bill,
\nit is not just paper but a connection
\nto the heritage of the Renaissance.<\/p>\n

The Canadian dollar, nicknamed the Loony,
\ndepicts a Canadian loon,
\nunderscoring their natural resources as a valued heritage.<\/p>\n

He then surprised me by examining Confederate money
\nissued during the Civil War.
\nI have never looked at a Confederate bill before.
\nShockingly, the $100 note depicts
\nrelatively well-dressed slaves,
\nhappily working in cotton fields.<\/p>\n

The blogger finally turns his discerning gaze to our own money,
\nof the seven images bills currently in circulation.
\nFive are American presidents, two are founding fathers.
\nAll are men, and all look very white,
\ndespite Alexander Hamilton\u2019s mixed heritage.<\/p>\n

While it is true that in 2016 then-Treasury Secretary Jacob Lew
\nannounced that in 2020 the $20 bill was to depict
\nthe American abolitionist Harriet Tubman,
\nand the back of the $10 would feature leaders of
\nthe suffrage movement like Sojourner Truth,
\nsuch has never come to pass.<\/p>\n

His conclusion: the images on our money
\ndo not look like our country.
\nThey look like the traditionally privileged and the powerful.<\/p>\n

In that vein, maybe when Jesus willingly handed over
\nthat Roman coin with its Imperial image back to his rivals,
\nhe was saying that Rome could keep its privilege \u2026 its pomp.
\nBut God had a different coinage that Caesar could never usurp.
\nIn the divine bureau of eternal engraving and printing,
\nGod\u2019s currency is stamped with 7.8 billion images and counting.
\nFor God\u2019s image is not engraved on silver or greenbacks,
\nbut on the face of every human being
\neach minted in the image of God.<\/p>\n

Give to Caesar what is Caesar\u2019s.
\nGive him and every legitimate form of leadership their legal due,
\ntheir constitutional policies and procedures.<\/p>\n

But that does not authorize them
\nto turn people into merchandise,
\nto commodify people\u2019s worth according to age or race,
\nsexual orientation or gender,
\nto calculate our value based on a stock portfolio,
\nreal estate holdings, or bank balance.<\/p>\n

And to give to God what is God\u2019s
\nis not simply paying some personal God tax or sin penalty
\nthat will wipe our personal ledgers clean
\nand leverage eternal life for us.<\/p>\n

Giving to God what is God\u2019s
\nalso requires giving to God\u2019s creatures
\neach created in that divine image
\ntheir due as well: dignity, respect, and yes, even love.
\nAnd as citizens of this world and the next,
\nit is also incumbent upon us to build a just society
\nin which civic leaders and governments do that as well.<\/p>\n

And the rabbi asked his students how they could tell when the night had ended and the day was on its way. “Could it be,” asked one “when you can see an animal in the distance and can tell whether it is a sheep or a dog?” “No,” said the rabbi. “Is it,” asked another, “When you can look at a distant tree and tell whether it is an olive or a fig tree?” “No,” said the rabbi.” Is it,” asked a third, “when you can gaze into a cup and tell whether the liquid is water or wine?” “No,” said the rabbi.” \u201cThen tell us,\u201d they demanded, “Tell us when you know that the night has ended and the day is on its way.” “It is,” said the rabbi, “when you can look into the face of any woman or man and see that they are your sister or brother, because if you cannot do this then it is still night no matter what the time.\u201d<\/p>\n

As baptized we are called to be children of the light,
\nto let our light shine out against the darkness
\nthat sometimes overshadows our land and our lives<\/p>\n

Our luminosity grows when we traffic in Jesus currency,
\nwhen we recognize that God\u2019s holy coinage is humanity itself
\nand that the face of every woman or man is, indeed,
\na sacred treasure
\nvaluable beyond any Caesar-calculus.<\/p>\n

In this unsettling, even disturbing time,
\nwe embrace anew God\u2019s lavish richness
\nsplashed across the faces of the human race
\nand as citizens of this world and the next
\ninvest earnestly and enthusiastically
\nin the treasure we call humanity.
\nThrough Christ our Lord.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
