I am especially interested in how sequences, often created in monastic environments as an adornment of the prescribed liturgy, may have some connections (at least functionally) with the so-called \u201cHymn of the Day\u201d or \u201cGospel Hymn\u201d associated with Lutheran and Anglican\/Episcopalian traditions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E50\"><span id=\"E51\">Recently I have become interested in the <\/span><span id=\"E52\">Roman<\/span><span id=\"E53\"> <\/span><span id=\"E54\">Seraphic Missal<\/span><span id=\"E55\"> (Paterson, NJ: St. Anthony Guild Press, 1968) as an example of very early post-Vatican II adaptation of the Eucharist of the Roman Rite. (It is helpful to remember that after <\/span><em><span id=\"E57\">Sacrosanctum<\/span><span id=\"E59\"> Concilium<\/span><\/em><span id=\"E60\"> was officially promulgated in 1963, various \u201cinterim\u201d versions of Roman-Rite liturgical texts appeared until the official promulgation of the <\/span><em><span id=\"E62\">Missale<\/span><span id=\"E64\"> <\/span><span id=\"E66\">Romanum<\/span><\/em><span id=\"E68\"> in 1970.) Intended for use by the three Franciscan orders, the English translations were approved by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops and approved by the Apostolic See, as well as approved by the Friar Minor Provincials\u2019 Conference of the United States and Canada and confirmed by the Apostolic See. (The printed version I have been examining has a 64-page fascicle of the 1970 Order of Mass bound into the 1968 edition between pp. 702 and 703.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E70\"><span id=\"E71\">Among the texts appointed for the Solemnity of Our Holy Father, Saint Francis on 4 October in the <\/span><span id=\"E72\">Roman Seraphic Missal<\/span><span id=\"E73\"> a lengthy Sequence appears, both in a Latin original and a<\/span><span id=\"E74\"> rather free<\/span><span id=\"E75\"> English <\/span><span id=\"E76\">metrical rhyming <\/span><span id=\"E77\">translation. He is the author of six books and more than two hundred fifty articles and reviews in journals such as Worship, Ecclesia Orans, and Questions Liturgiques. He has composed and arranged more than 300 pieces of liturgical music.
