{"id":53114,"date":"2020-08-28T10:00:36","date_gmt":"2020-08-28T15:00:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/?p=53114"},"modified":"2020-08-28T15:14:15","modified_gmt":"2020-08-28T20:14:15","slug":"new-italian-edition-of-the-roman-missal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/index.php\/2020\/08\/28\/new-italian-edition-of-the-roman-missal\/","title":{"rendered":"New Italian Edition of the Roman Missal Published"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Daily News Bulletin of Holy See carries the <a href=\"http:\/\/press.vatican.va\/content\/salastampa\/en\/bollettino\/pubblico\/2020\/08\/28\/200828a.html\">news<\/a> today that Pope Francis granted an audience for the \u00a0\u201cPresentation of the new Missal of the Italian Episcopal Conference.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Last year PrayTell carried a <a href=\"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/index.php\/2019\/05\/30\/forthcoming-italian-missal\/\">story<\/a> on this new translation on its approval by Pope Francis.\u00a0<span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">The new edition which the Italian bishops<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">\u00a0<\/span><a style=\"font-size: 1rem;\" href=\"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/index.php\/2018\/11\/12\/french-and-italian-missal-translations\/\">approved<\/a><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">in 2018, will cost \u20ac110 and its use will be mandatory from Easter 2021.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Today<em> Avenire<\/em>, the official newspaper of the Italian Bishop\u2019s Conference, carries a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.avvenire.it\/chiesa\/pagine\/bassetti-consegna-al-papa-il-nuovo-messale-romano-in-italiano\">news article<\/a> on the presentation of the first copy of the new edition to Pope Francis.\u00a0This<em>\u00a0<\/em>article says that there will be only three changes to the assembly\u2019s parts of the liturgy:<\/p>\n<p>The Our Father will reflect the new Italian translation that was already introduced last year: &#8220;lead us not into temptation&#8221; [e non ci indurre in tentazione ] will now read \u201cabandon us not to temptation&#8221; [ non abbandonarci alla tentazion ].<\/p>\n<p>The word \u201calso\u201d [anche] will be added to the line \u201cas we [also] forgive those who trespass against us.\u201d [come anche noi li rimettiamo].<\/p>\n<p>Then one line of the Gloria is also changed: \u201cpeace on earth to those people of good will\u201d [pace in terra agli uomini di buona volont\u00e0] will change to \u201cpeace on earth peace to those people, loved by God\u201d [pace in terra agli uomini, amati dal Signore].<\/p>\n<p>These three changes are the only changes to the assembly\u2019s parts, and two of them had already been made with the new Our Father translation. In 2011 the University of Notre Dame Press published The Eucharist in Pre-Norman Ireland an adaptation of his doctoral thesis and in 2017 the Alcuin Club published his Liturgical Orientation: The Position of the President at the Eucharist. His articles have appeared in The Irish Theological Quarterly, New Blackfriars, The Furrow and Antiphon. Neil Xavier O'Donoghue"},"description":"Neil Xavier O\u2019Donoghue is originally from Cork, Ireland. He is a presbyter of the Archdiocese of Newark, NJ who has ministered in parishes on both sides of the Atlantic. He has spent many years as an academic mentor to seminarians. Neil currently serves as Programme Director for Liturgical Programmes at the Pontifical University and as Acting Director of the National Centre for Liturgy. Since 2020 he has also served as the Executive Secretary for Liturgy to the Irish Catholic Bishops Conference. He has studied at Seton Hall University (BA, MDiv), the University of Notre Dame (MA), and St Vladimir\u2019s Orthodox Theological Seminary (MTh). He holds a Doctorate in Theology (Ph.D.) from St Patrick\u2019s College, Maynooth and is in the process of completing a second doctorate (D.D) in the Pontifical Facultad de Teolog\u00eda Redemptoris Mater in Callao, Peru. Neil has published a translation of the Confessio of St. Patrick: St. Patrick: His Confession and Other Works (Totowa, NJ, 2009), as well editing the third edition of Fredrick Edward Warren\u2019s The Liturgy and Ritual of the Celtic Church (Piscataway, NJ, 2010). In 2011 the University of Notre Dame Press published The Eucharist in Pre-Norman Ireland an adaptation of his doctoral thesis and in 2017 the Alcuin Club published his Liturgical Orientation: The Position of the President at the Eucharist. His articles have appeared in The Irish Theological Quarterly, New Blackfriars, The Furrow and Antiphon.
