What is a &#8220;sanctuary&#8221; in these days when so many are worshiping virtually. One thing I have noticed is the conspicuous presence of windows in our lives during this pandemic and the space they mark between us.<\/p>\n<p>One news photo lingers in my heart&#8217;s eye, a blurry selfie of a grandchild&#8217;s small hand press to Grandpa&#8217;s wrinkled one with a nursing home window between them.\u00a0I am also connecting with people through Zoom architecture&#8211;through windows in walls. Both of these realities and others like them exemplify the extent to which we are experiencing much of life from unfamiliar distances.<\/p>\n<p>This poem-prayer expresses my hope that we &#8220;beautify our gaze&#8221; and hold the distance between us as sacred space where God&#8217;s radical beauty and grace are being revealed in new ways.<\/p>\n<p>Windows frame<br \/>\nbits and pieces<br \/>\nof stories lived.<\/p>\n<p>Through luminous panes, we see<br \/>\nfragments of lifetimes that<br \/>\nhope<br \/>\nplant<br \/>\nharvest<br \/>\nsuffer<br \/>\nlaugh<br \/>\ndance<br \/>\nweep<br \/>\npray.<\/p>\n<p>Give.<\/p>\n<p>Indeed,<br \/>\na bounded glass quadrangle<br \/>\nlures hearts to lean forward,<br \/>\nto see more,<br \/>\nto taste and hear<br \/>\nand be permeable to<br \/>\nthe particles and sum of life<br \/>\nthat wait<br \/>\nthrough the looking glass that wait<br \/>\nto astound and<br \/>\nchange us&#8211;<br \/>\nwhen we look out beyond<br \/>\ninto who we<br \/>\nhave been<br \/>\nand are becoming<br \/>\nand already are.<\/p>\n<p>Walls hold stories too<br \/>\nbut do not frame<br \/>\nwith words.<br \/>\nThey keep in confidence<br \/>\nexpectant moments<br \/>\nthat course through them<br \/>\nacross years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI do\u201d and \u201cI love you\u201d whispered over there.<br \/>\n\u201cGoodbye\u201d mouthed across<br \/>\na benedicting room.<br \/>\nA \u201cgrief observed.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cHope deferred.\u201d<br \/>\nJustice made<br \/>\nreal.<br \/>\nHands held<br \/>\nor clasped<br \/>\nor lifted up to catch<br \/>\nthe falling down,<br \/>\nswirling around Spirit<br \/>\nof that cloud of witnesses stowed away<br \/>\nby remembering walls<br \/>\nthat tell without speaking&#8211;<br \/>\nGod\u2019s own truth.<br \/>\n\u201cPreach, preacher. We need some good news.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So we sojourn in this place<br \/>\nour feet touch floors<br \/>\nstained by Holy Communion wine<br \/>\nfrom years gone by,<br \/>\nlittered with crumbs of remembering,<br \/>\nseasoned by age-old tears.<br \/>\nWe gather here.<br \/>\nWe listen.<br \/>\nWe wait.<br \/>\nFor God. For grace.<\/p>\n<p>And now and then, here and there<br \/>\na window materializes<br \/>\nin walls once thought impenetrable.<br \/>\nLight breaks through<br \/>\nand we see<br \/>\na life&#8211;<br \/>\na face<br \/>\nseeds sown into fertile soil<br \/>\na home<br \/>\nand a path<br \/>\nthat invites a step toward whatever<br \/>\nlies just beyond the frame.<br \/>\nNow and then, here and there<br \/>\nwe become part of these gifts<br \/>\ngiven with such love.<br \/>\nThey become part of us&#8211;<br \/>\nroots deepening,<br \/>\nour branches<br \/>\nexploring holy wildernesses<br \/>\nbeyond all frames.<br \/>\nOur lives<br \/>\nwindows in walls.<\/p>\n<p>Yes, now and then, here and there,<br \/>\nwindows thrown open wide,<br \/>\nSpirit winds rush in,<br \/>\nand we know\u2014God was here.<br \/>\nGod is here.
