{"id":52493,"date":"2020-06-23T07:54:09","date_gmt":"2020-06-23T12:54:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/?p=52493"},"modified":"2020-07-02T21:04:23","modified_gmt":"2020-07-03T02:04:23","slug":"statutes-symbols-sacraments","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/index.php\/2020\/06\/23\/statutes-symbols-sacraments\/","title":{"rendered":"Statues, Symbols, Sacraments"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"c0bef\" data-offset-key=\"4icfr-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"4icfr-0-0\">\n<p><span data-offset-key=\"4icfr-0-0\"> The current wave of toppling public statues can be a good teaching moment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-offset-key=\"4icfr-0-0\">When teaching sacramental theology, e.g. unpacking Real Presence, it&#8217;s a challenge to explain to students that <strong>symbols are real,<\/strong> that &#8220;just a symbol&#8221; is an impoverished worldview that does not do justice to what human beings are, to how we think and perceive and value and relate to one another.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">Statues are symbols. And they&#8217;re real. Try saying, in this overheated moment, that &#8220;it&#8217;s just a statue&#8221; and it &#8220;doesn&#8217;t matter&#8221; whether he owned slaves or mistreated natives, that &#8220;the reality is the same&#8221; whether the &#8220;mere statue&#8221; remains or not.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-offset-key=\"4icfr-0-0\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"4icfr-0-0\"><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">\u00a0I think I have a point of entry for my undergrad Christian Worship class this fall.
