It was addressed to the Polish Episcopal Conference to mark the 100<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary of John Paul II\u2019s birth. It should be no surprise that it mentioned John Paul II\u2019s love of the Divine Mercy devotion.<\/p>\n<p>This devotion was popularized by St. Faustina Kowalska, the Polish mystic and visionary whose diary relates visions where Jesus asks for a special feast of mercy to be held on the Sunday after Easter Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>The July\/August 1995 edition of the USCCB\u2019s Committee on the Liturgy <em>Newsletter<\/em> considered a request to adopt the feast in the U.S.\u00a0 But they \u201cfelt that [it] was not the appropriate time to request such a celebration for the United States.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On April 22, 2001, the day of the canonization of Faustina Kowalska, John Paul II added the line \u201cor of Divine Mercy\u201d to the title of the Second of Easter (<em>Dominica II Paschae seu de divina misericordia<\/em>). The following June he added attached <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vatican.va\/roman_curia\/tribunals\/apost_penit\/documents\/rc_trib_appen_doc_20020629_decree-ii_en.html\">indulgences<\/a> to devotions in honour of Divine Mercy.<\/p>\n<p>From today\u2019s letter, it appears that John Paul II had initially wished to make more profound changes to the Missal, but that Cardinal Ratzinger, the then head of the CDF, blocked the proposal. John Paul II made a counter-proposal of just changing the title of the Sunday, to which Cardinal Ratzinger agreed.\u00a0 Here is the relevant section of the letter:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>From the very beginning, John Paul II was deeply touched by the message of Faustina Kowalska, a nun from Krak\u00f3w, who emphasized Divine Mercy as an essential center of the Christian faith. She had hoped for the establishment of such a feast day. After consultation, the Pope chose the Second Sunday of Easter. However, before the final decision was made, he asked the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith to express its view on the appropriateness of this date. We responded negatively because such an ancient, traditional and meaningful date like the Sunday \u201cin Albis\u201d concluding the Octave of Easter should not be burdened with modern ideas. It was certainly not easy for the Holy Father to accept our reply. Yet, he did so with great humility and accepted our negative response a second time. Finally, he formulated a proposal that left the Second Sunday of Easter in its historical form but included Divine Mercy in its original message.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>UPDATE 5\/18<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Today the Congregation for Divine Worship published a <a href=\"http:\/\/press.vatican.va\/content\/salastampa\/it\/bollettino\/pubblico\/2020\/05\/18\/0287\/00639.html#inglese\">Decree<\/a> where they add an optional memorial for Saint Faustina Kowalska, virgin, to\u00a0the General Roman Calendar, that may be observed on October 5. Neil Xavier O'Donoghue"},"description":"Neil Xavier O\u2019Donoghue is originally from Cork, Ireland. He is a presbyter of the Archdiocese of Newark, NJ who has ministered in parishes on both sides of the Atlantic. He has spent many years as an academic mentor to seminarians. Neil currently serves as Programme Director for Liturgical Programmes at the Pontifical University and as Acting Director of the National Centre for Liturgy. Since 2020 he has also served as the Executive Secretary for Liturgy to the Irish Catholic Bishops Conference. He has studied at Seton Hall University (BA, MDiv), the University of Notre Dame (MA), and St Vladimir\u2019s Orthodox Theological Seminary (MTh). He holds a Doctorate in Theology (Ph.D.) from St Patrick\u2019s College, Maynooth and is in the process of completing a second doctorate (D.D) in the Pontifical Facultad de Teolog\u00eda Redemptoris Mater in Callao, Peru. Neil has published a translation of the Confessio of St. Patrick: St. Patrick: His Confession and Other Works (Totowa, NJ, 2009), as well editing the third edition of Fredrick Edward Warren\u2019s The Liturgy and Ritual of the Celtic Church (Piscataway, NJ, 2010). In 2011 the University of Notre Dame Press published The Eucharist in Pre-Norman Ireland an adaptation of his doctoral thesis and in 2017 the Alcuin Club published his Liturgical Orientation: The Position of the President at the Eucharist. His articles have appeared in The Irish Theological Quarterly, New Blackfriars, The Furrow and Antiphon.
