{"id":52013,"date":"2020-05-06T14:13:45","date_gmt":"2020-05-06T19:13:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/?p=52013"},"modified":"2025-03-25T04:49:50","modified_gmt":"2025-03-25T09:49:50","slug":"work-and-prayer-in-time-of-pandemic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/index.php\/2020\/05\/06\/work-and-prayer-in-time-of-pandemic\/","title":{"rendered":"Work and Prayer in Time of Pandemic"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We\u2019ve been home, away from prayer and work for eight (long) weeks.\u00a0 Supposedly, we\u2019re praying and working from home.\u00a0 In an attempt to execute this formidable task, at least with respect to \u201cwork,\u201d I\u2019ve occupied my dining room (it\u2019s an explosion equal to that of my office now), while my husband has set up camp in my daughter\u2019s room (which he breaks down every afternoon, so she won\u2019t freak out).<\/p>\n<p>But, sitting in these corners of our house typing away on laptops, of course, gives one cause to grow antsy.\u00a0 Really antsy.\u00a0 Instead of walking down the hall to find a colleague to chat with, or a chapel to pray in, I walk around my house and imagine all the things I should clean, organize, or otherwise take apart and put together again.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/i.ytimg.com\/vi\/bLr9ED4azOk\/hqdefault.jpg\" alt=\"Assembling of Radio Flyer Tricycle - YouTube\" width=\"236\" height=\"177\" \/><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"0\" data-end=\"494\">And so, in an effort to shake off the restlessness, I find myself drawn to the quiet rebellion of scrubbing, dusting, and rearranging. There\u2019s a peculiar satisfaction in watching order take shape\u2014grime dissolving, floors gleaming, the air itself feeling lighter. Perhaps it\u2019s the illusion of control, or maybe just the simple joy of seeing tangible results. Either way, the rhythm of tidying up becomes its own kind of meditation, a small way to reclaim a sense of purpose amid the stillness.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"496\" data-end=\"990\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\">Of course, not all messes are created equal, and some demand more than a haphazard wipe-down with an old dish towel. That\u2019s when a true expert steps in\u2014someone who understands the science of spotless spaces, the art of deep cleaning. <a href=\"https:\/\/ccscleaning-services.com\/\">Crystal Cleaning Services<\/a> has mastered this craft, transforming cluttered corners into pristine havens with an efficiency that borders on magic. It\u2019s the kind of expertise that makes you wonder why you ever tried tackling that stubborn kitchen grime alone.<\/p>\n<p>And, such wanderings have been quite productive: I assembled a tricycle.\u00a0 I made three pans of muffins and a pie in the past 10 days.\u00a0 I scoured the soapscum out of our bathroom shower (take THAT, 1970\u2019s blue formica!).\u00a0 I tackled the sunporch which had devolved into dubiously stacked winter storage.<\/p>\n<p>Yet, task-oriented as I am, and as delighted as I am that my shower is clean (or at least that I\u2019m eating muffins), this has been a dark time.\u00a0 I\u2019ve gotten some \u201cwork\u201d done.\u00a0 But my prayer life is a wreck.<\/p>\n<p>Without a colleague to remind me to be joyful, or a chapel to sit in\u2026let alone the absence of the Mass\u2026I am struggling to pray.<\/p>\n<p>This struggle has been palpably present because I have been <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-52014 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/IMG_20200506_143952084-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/IMG_20200506_143952084-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/IMG_20200506_143952084-533x400.jpg 533w, https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/IMG_20200506_143952084-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/IMG_20200506_143952084-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/IMG_20200506_143952084-2048x1536.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/IMG_20200506_143952084-100x75.jpg 100w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>studiously avoiding my little home prayer corner, with its designated chair.\u00a0 This little chair\u2014one of the last remaining refugees from my grad school furniture suite of hand-me-downs\u2014exists solely for me to sit and pray in it.\u00a0 <span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">It is orange.\u00a0 It is decently comfortable.\u00a0 It faces icons.\u00a0 It is in a quiet spot (assuming we have no distressed child).\u00a0 But it\u2019s also covered in <\/span><em style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">piles <\/em><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">of things.\u00a0 Maternity clothes I no longer need to wear.\u00a0 Winter blankets I\u2019ve pulled off our beds.\u00a0 A mix of baby toys and kids\u2019 socks (discarded by my son), and play food (deposited by my daughter).\u00a0 There is literally no room for me\u2014not at this table of prayer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Why, I wonder, is it so easy to be complacent when one prays alone?\u00a0 Why can\u2019t I just <em>clean off <\/em>the chair?
