{"id":51309,"date":"2020-03-22T17:24:28","date_gmt":"2020-03-22T22:24:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/?p=51309"},"modified":"2020-03-30T07:41:35","modified_gmt":"2020-03-30T12:41:35","slug":"virtual-liturgies-can-be-dangerous-too","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/index.php\/2020\/03\/22\/virtual-liturgies-can-be-dangerous-too\/","title":{"rendered":"Virtual Liturgies can be Dangerous Too!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Most of us who teach liturgy like to explain how awesome liturgy is.\u00a0 It\u2019s not simply a case of fulfilling rubrics and saying words.\u00a0 In fact we sometimes like to tell our students that liturgy can be \u201cdangerous.\u201d This is an attempt to break through the prejudices that some students have when they think that liturgy isn\u2019t all that important as a theological discipline.<\/p>\n<p>In these strange times, many of us are getting used to internet liturgies and many are asking if these virtual liturgies are true liturgy and we are arguing if a Mass celebrated in front of a webcam with only a \u201cvirtual\u201d assembly \u201ccounts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, this weekend we have some proof that aside from the question of whether these newly popular internet liturgies \u201ccount,\u201d at least they are real enough to be dangerous!<\/p>\n<p>Simon Beach, a Church of England priest of St. Budeaux Parish Church in Plymouth, England, was recording his first \u201cvirtual\u201d service.\u00a0 The 61 year old has not had a lot of experience with recording himself while preaching and was preaching with a backdrop of a cross and candles.\u00a0 But he had to end his sermon early with the comment, \u201cOh dear; I&#8217;ve just caught fire.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His sweater had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.itv.com\/news\/westcountry\/2020-03-21\/oh-dear-i-ve-just-caught-fire-plymouth-vicar-has-close-call-during-online-sermon\/\">caught fire<\/a> from the candles in the backdrop.\u00a0 Fortunately no harm was done and his fellow vicars have been teasing him with jokes about \u201cbeing on fire for Jesus\u201d and telling him that he \u201cshould have waited for Pentecost.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rev.
