A Different Fasting<\/p>\n
The Word became flesh
\nand came to dwell among us\u2014<\/p>\n
Now, in our isolated,
\nenfleshed dwelling-places
\nwe forget the God incarnate,
\ndisremember the Divine in flesh,
\nand dis-incarnate our
\nalready-fearful-of-flesh-lives.<\/p>\n
We are exiled from
\nThis, my Body
\nThis, my Blood\u2026
\ncaptives to fasting
\nnot merely from bread and cup
\nbut from those
\nembodied, breathing sacraments
\nwho stood with us, knelt with us,
\nprayed with us, listened with us,
\nsang with us, who spoke the Risen Word
\n\u201cPeace\u201d
\nwith us.<\/p>\n
Let us see beyond
\nthis time of flesh
\n– as contagion,
\n– as crisis,
\nand be invigorated,
\nas Christ,
\nin memory of those who will
\nagain one day
\njoin with us, repent with us,
\npraise with us, thank with us,
\neat with us
\ndrink with us;
\ntheir unmasked breath
\nthe Spirit who makes us one.<\/p>\n
In this time of distance
\nlet us recall and crave
\na love that impelled
\nthe celestial embrace
\nwho fused with our flesh,
\nfused us all in the font,
\nand still fuses us now
\nin this fasting.<\/p>\n
Once freed from this fast,
\nour self-giving,
\nnot self-serving
\nmust rouse our rising
\nto go, to help, to heal,
\nto lift, to live renewed.<\/p>\n
\u2014Word who became flesh,
\ncome, dwell among us:
\nNow, then forever,
