{"id":5084,"date":"2010-11-04T14:57:27","date_gmt":"2010-11-04T19:57:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/?p=5084"},"modified":"2010-11-05T22:45:12","modified_gmt":"2010-11-06T03:45:12","slug":"empathy-for-the-translators-of-the-ordo-missae-1-the-dialogues-of-the-liturgy-of-the-word","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/index.php\/2010\/11\/04\/empathy-for-the-translators-of-the-ordo-missae-1-the-dialogues-of-the-liturgy-of-the-word\/","title":{"rendered":"Empathy for the Translators of the Ordo Missae 1: The Dialogues of the Liturgy of the Word"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Many postings at the <em>Pray Tell <\/em> blog have offered careful judgments about the quality of the translations into English of the MR2008, ranging from infelicities of expression to apparent mistakes in understanding.\u00a0Other postings have expressed intense emotion, sometimes about the process by which the translations have come to us, sometimes about the pastoral difficulties that may be encountered in coming to pray the Roman Rite Eucharist using these texts.<\/p>\n<p>I would like to take a slightly different tack and instead express my empathy for the translators.\u00a0The more I work with these texts the more daunting seems the task of rendering venerable Latin prayer texts in intelligible and worthy English.\u00a0My first example comes from the translation of the texts surrounding the proclamation of the scriptures in the <em>Ordo Missae<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The rubric appearing after the proclamation of the First and Second Readings in the Liturgy of the Word in RM2008 is identical:<\/p>\n<p><em>Ad finem lectionis significandam, lector acclamat: Verbum Domini. Omnes respondent: Deo gratias<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The proposed English translation taken from the USCCB website translates this:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo indicate the end of the reading, the reader acclaims: The Word of the Lord.\u00a0 All reply: Thanks be to God.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The rubric appearing after the proclamation of the Gospel in the Liturgy of the Word in RM2008 is:<\/p>\n<p><em>Expleto Evangelio, diaconus, vel sacerdos acclamat: Verbum Domini.\u00a0 Omnes respondent: Laus tibi, Christe.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The proposed English translation taken from the USCCB website translates this:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt the end of the Gospel, the Deacon, or the Priest acclaims: The Gospel of the Lord.\u00a0 All reply: Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Now one would expect that, following the prescriptions of <em>Liturgiam Authenticam<\/em>, the translators would have chosen to render the same Latin phrase (<em>Verbum Domini<\/em>) with the same English phrase, but we instead have \u201cThe Word of the Lord\u201d in certain instances of its use, and \u201cThe Gospel of the Lord\u201d in another. One suspects that the earlier translators, recognizing that the same \u201ccue\u201d called for two different congregational responses (depending on whether the scripture proclaimed was taken from a Gospel or from a scriptural text other than the Gospel), thought that they should depart from a literal translation of the Latin text for pastoral reasons, thus providing different cues in different ritual settings to assist the congregation in making its proper response.<\/p>\n<p>Similarly, one would expect that, following the prescriptions of <em>Liturgicam Authenticam<\/em>, the translators would have rendered <em>Laus tibi Christe<\/em> as \u201cPraise to you, Christ\u201d (or possibly adding \u201cO\u201d before \u201cChrist\u201d to emphasize vocative address).\u00a0In fact the translation adds \u201cLord Jesus\u201d before \u201cChrist,\u201d words which are simply not in the Latin.\u00a0Once again one suspects that the earlier translators sought to heighten the effect of the congregational acclamation after the Gospel.\u00a0One has only to compare the two strong accents of \u201cTHANKS be to GOD\u201d with the multiple accents of \u201cPRAISE to YOU, LORD, JE-sus CHRIST\u201d to experience that effect.<\/p>\n<p>Apparently the present translators, the bishops who approved this translation, and the Congregation for Divine Worship itself by granting its <em>recognitio<\/em>, all agreed that, in these instances, the mandate of <em>Liturgiam authenticam<\/em> for literal translation of Latin texts should be set aside, perhaps because these ritual interchanges have become so well-established in the English-speaking world and because these texts do not raise any doctrinal issues (i.e., for \u201cpastoral reasons\u201d).\u00a0The problem, of course, is in trying to determine why such a departure from <em>Liturgiam authenticam<\/em>\u2019s directives applies here but not in similar situations elsewhere in the Roman Missal.\u00a0One can only feel empathy for translators when the rules given for their work of translation always apply except when they don\u2019t.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>One can only feel empathy for translators when the rules given for their work of translation always apply except when they don\u2019t.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":17,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_jetpack_feature_clip_id":0,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[24],"tags":[106,460],"class_list":["post-5084","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-translation-new-missal","tag-liturgiam-authenticam","tag-mass-dialogs"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.6 -
