not trying to Google \u201cExtraordinary Form of the Mass\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In the eyes of any student, colleague, or friend who\u2019s ever known me, I\u2019m doing something crazy this year\u2014I\u2019m using technology in the classroom.<\/p>\n<p>I have passionately rejected technology in all its glowing, mind-sucking forms. \u00a0I preach to students about the gloriousness of being \u201cfree\u201d from the terrible stress of a blinking, buzzing phone during the blissful hour of theology class.\u00a0 I insist on paper copies of texts.\u00a0 And I DO NOT use powerpoint.<\/p>\n<p>Until this year, that is.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-50819 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/technology-in-book.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"275\" height=\"183\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Let me explain. \u00a0I was struck in the second week of the semester with every teacher\u2019s nightmare: I lost my voice.\u00a0 Determined not to lose another class day for my small, upper-level liturgy seminar, I jumped on the lifeboat of technology.\u00a0 I made a powerpoint presentation.<\/p>\n<p>To my surprise\/dismay, the whole practice worked pretty well.\u00a0 So well, in fact, that I tried it again\u2014and again.\u00a0 I\u2019ve found that the visual powerpoint gives us a \u201cthird eye\u201d in the room\u2014one who can help us keep on task and avoid the rabbit holes that students (or I) are tempted to fall into with our opinions on liturgical subjects.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-50814 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Pope-Francis-and-the-New-Media-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" \u201cLiturgy and the New Evangelization.\u201d\u00a0 If I want to take the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/about\/leadership\/usccb-general-assembly\/2012-june-meeting\/using-the-new-media-for-the-new-evangelization.cfm\">USCCB\u2019s<\/a> or <a href=\"http:\/\/w2.vatican.va\/content\/francesco\/en\/messages\/communications\/documents\/papa-francesco_20160124_messaggio-comunicazioni-sociali.html\">Pope Francis<\/a>\u2019 calls to evangelize using \u201cthe new media\u201d seriously, I should probably <em>consider<\/em> using some technology more robust than a dry-erase marker.<\/p>\n<p>And yet, my reluctant, heel-dragging foray into technology in the liturgical classroom has run me into a new, and much deeper issue.\u00a0 I incorporate images into my slides by using Google.\u00a0 But try Googling \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=roman+catholic+mass&amp;rlz=1C1GCEA_enUS883US883&amp;sxsrf=ACYBGNSj4lqH9Ahj2nukTyDg3Rnr2C_xIQ:1581097219553&amp;source=lnms&amp;tbm=isch&amp;sa=X&amp;ved=2ahUKEwjOvIGR_r_nAhWWK80KHZQBC9oQ_AUoAnoECBAQBA&amp;biw=1440&amp;bih=708\">Roman Catholic Mass<\/a>.\u201d\u00a0 Look at the images, and what do you find?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Of the first 15 images, 6 are images of the presider, <em>ad orientem<\/em><\/li>\n<li>9 of them show the presider flanked by an all-male entourage [that is, no female altar servers]<\/li>\n<li>10 show an image of the presider at the altar during the Eucharistic Prayer<\/li>\n<li>6 images show an elevated host and\/or chalice.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Now, please know I have no issues with traditional church spaces, and I quite agree that <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-50816 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Ad-Orientemcrop-770x439_c-300x171.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"171\" srcset=\"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Ad-Orientemcrop-770x439_c-300x171.jpg 300w, https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Ad-Orientemcrop-770x439_c-600x342.jpg 600w, https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Ad-Orientemcrop-770x439_c-768x438.jpg 768w, https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Ad-Orientemcrop-770x439_c.jpg 770w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Eucharistic Praying is unquestionably worthy of symbolizing \u201cthe Mass.\u201d\u00a0 I do take issue with the focus on the presider alone, with the maleness (and whiteness) of the <em>assisting<\/em> ministers, the absolute absence of the gathered Body of Christ, and the clear preponderance of images of Mass in a form <em>other <\/em>than that which is universally practiced as our Roman Catholic Eucharistic liturgy, also know as \u201cthe Ordinary Form.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Where is the Ordinary Form of the Mass on social media?\u00a0 On Google?\u00a0 Anywhere, out there, on the vast and billowing waves of the world wide web?<\/p>\n<p>Some scholars, such as ethicist Lisa Sowle Cahill, have noted that \u201cfringe\u201d groups at either extreme (\u201cleft\u201d or \u201cright\u201d) have made better use of technology and media than more \u201cmainstream\u201d groups.\u00a0 This perhaps is the case across most disciplines, but it seems that persons searching to learn more about the Mass, Catholicism, the practice of liturgy, or the Eucharist, are being schooled into visioning fairly marginally representative images as normative for Catholic practice.\u00a0 This concerns me greatly.<\/p>\n<p>I do not have an immediate answer for this\u2014but I do have a question, or perhaps even a call to action.\u00a0 Can Roman Catholic liturgists, parishioners, ministers (lay ecclesial and ordained) make an effort to post and share media which reflect the experiences of the lay faithful within the Mass as unfolding Tradition and the Holy Spirit have given it to us\u2014that is, in the Ordinary Form?<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-50818 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/diverse-mass-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/diverse-mass-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/diverse-mass-600x400.jpg 600w, https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/diverse-mass-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/diverse-mass-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/diverse-mass-420x280.jpg 420w, https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/diverse-mass.jpg 1860w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Can these images be more inclusive?\u00a0 Can we see the Liturgy of the Word and the Opening Rites?\u00a0 The renewal of Baptismal vows during Easter?\u00a0 The signing with Ashes on Ash Wednesday?\u00a0 Can <span style=\"font-size: 1rem\">we see male and female lectors, altar servers, greeters, and musicians?\u00a0 Can we see reflected in the Google search, \u201cRoman Catholic Mass,\u201d the exponential growth in numbers of our Latino\/a brothers and sisters?\u00a0 Or recognize that our congregations house refugees from Burma?\u00a0 Or recognize the voices of our historically marginalized African American Roman Catholic congregations?<\/span><\/p>\n<p>My own small solution\u2014at least for my class\u2014is to make attempts to dig deeper than the first 15 slides which Google shows me.\u00a0 But I\u2019d like to see a day where we get beyond doing crafty searches to outwit Google.\u00a0 I\u2019d like to Google \u201cRoman Catholic Mass\u201d
