{"id":50657,"date":"2020-01-20T11:24:53","date_gmt":"2020-01-20T17:24:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/?p=50657"},"modified":"2020-01-25T17:29:27","modified_gmt":"2020-01-25T23:29:27","slug":"easter-vigil-exodus-canticle","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/index.php\/2020\/01\/20\/easter-vigil-exodus-canticle\/","title":{"rendered":"Easter Vigil \/ Exodus Canticle"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I recently received a query from a friend, who said this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>I had a very\ndisturbing discussion with my (new) Pastor regarding the Easter Vigil.<\/em><em>&nbsp;<\/em><em>\nIn this discussion he asked my opinion on celebrating the Easter Vigil this\nyear using a period of silence after each of the readings and omitting\nthe Psalms.<\/em><em>&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>The Roman Missal\nincludes a single reference to a period of solemn silence after the readings\nand omitting the Psalms (page 364, para 23).<\/em><em>&nbsp;<\/em><em>\nHowever, the same section (Liturgy of the Word) includes nine (9) citations where\nsinging the Psalms is explicitly referenced in the instructing paragraphs\n(pages 364-367, paras 21, 23, 24, 25, 27, 28, 29, 30 and 31).<\/em><em>&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>&nbsp;Are you aware of any\nother guidance or supporting documentation to suggest omitting the Psalms is\nnormative\/desired?<\/em><em>&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Have you ever been a\nparticipant at an Easter Vigil that omitted the Psalms?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here is an edited version of my reply:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The norm is to have all seven OT readings, with each reading\nbeing followed by a psalm or canticle and a psalm prayer. That seems clear from\nthe documents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, for pastoral reasons, it is permitted to omit some\nof the readings (except for the 3rd Reading). People used to do this a lot, and\nfor a while only having three OT readings became the usual practice. This was\ndone in order to make the service not unduly long, and to avoid any possible\ntedium with such an extended sequence of readings and psalms. Then people\nstarted to realize that there was a loss of richness, and today five readings\nis much more common, with some places having all seven.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The provision to have a period of &#8220;sacred silence&#8221;\nin place of the responsorial psalm is likewise a pastoral provision, but with a\ndifferent purpose. Yes, there may be a time-saving element, but the primary\nreason is to assist those places whose musical resources are limited (as other\nnew rubrics in the Triduum attest). The musicians may not easily be able to put\non so much music, and in any case it could be better to have less music done\nwell, rather than more music done to an inadequate standard. But the provision\nis not intended as one option with equal weight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When I encounter musicians who are of limited attainments, I\nsuggest to them that they might have silence instead of&nbsp;<strong>some<\/strong>&nbsp;but\nnot all of the psalms. So, if there are five readings, they might sing the\npsalm after Readings 1, 3 and 5, and have silence after Readings 2 and 4. In\nyour case, not lacking in resources, there is no real reason for limiting the\namount of work you have to do. I wonder if your new pastor simply\ndoesn&#8217;t like music, or perhaps doesn&#8217;t like your sort of music.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">__________________________________________<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I also want to alert you to <strong>a significant error<\/strong> <strong>in the\nUS Lectionary<\/strong>. The powers-that-be have known about this for many years but\nhave not so far done anything about it. (I queried then-Fr James Moroney,\nExecutive Director at the USCCB\u2019s Secretariat for Liturgy, about this error in\nthe late 1990s, and he acknowledged that it was indeed incorrect.) Here is the\nerror:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As currently published, the US Lectionary for the end of the\n3rd Reading at the Vigil has this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&gt;&gt;&gt;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8230;they feared the LORD and believed in him and in his\nservant Moses.<br>\n<br>\nThen Moses and the Israelites sang this song to the LORD:<br>\nI will sing to the LORD, for he is gloriously triumphant;<br>\nhorse and chariot he has cast into the sea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Responsorial Psalm&nbsp;\n<\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/bible\/readings\/bible\/Exodus\/15:1\"><strong>EX\n15:1-2, 3-4, 5-6, 17-18<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">R. (1b)\u00a0Let us sing to the Lord; he has covered himself in glory.<br> I will sing to the LORD, for he is gloriously triumphant;&#8230;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&lt;&lt;&lt;\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But this is not what is in the Latin, nor in any other\nlectionary that I have encountered around the world, including other\nEnglish-language lectionaries (for example, the British Isles + Australia\nedition). What the US Lectionary&nbsp;<strong>should<\/strong>&nbsp;have is this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&gt;&gt;&gt;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">they feared the LORD and believed in him and in his servant\nMoses.<br>\n<br>\nThen Moses and the Israelites sang this song to the LORD:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>The choir takes up the Responsorial Psalm immediately.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Responsorial Psalm&nbsp;\n<\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/bible\/readings\/bible\/Exodus\/15:1\"><strong>EX\n15:1-2, 3-4, 5-6, 17-18<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">R. (1b)&nbsp;Let\nus sing to the Lord; he has covered himself in glory.<br>\nI will sing to the LORD, for he is gloriously triumphant;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&lt;&lt;&lt;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In other words, not only are there two redundant lines at\nthe end of the reading, but the rubric which says that the choir sings the\nExodus canticle (so no possibility of silence here) has been omitted as well. The\nreading should end with Ex 15:1a, while the canticle begins at Ex 15:1b. Countless\nUS parishes have therefore unwittingly been getting this wrong every year since\n1970!
