Smith\u2019s contention that this liturgy fosters an\nanthropology like and unlike Christian theological anthropology.&nbsp; I return to the mall in this post not so much\nto address whether or how shopping at a mall generates judgmentalism and\ninsecurity in the minds and hearts of shoppers but rather to draw attention to\nthe environment of the shopping mall.&nbsp; In\na recent contribution to the online <a href=\"https:\/\/churchlifejournal.nd.edu\/articles\/the-consumers-regress\/?utm_campaign=CLJ_Weekly%20Subscriber%20Email_19-0507&amp;utm_source=hs_email&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_content=80892992&amp;_hsenc=p2ANqtz-_9HNNUiEz5OxugkgyDPYEDHdqys2A5X0BxpqxqxZ62ghEsRBQtey9kmvCDtw7QHCBha4v23m9RyGER1JVOPq0jHHqFaqyuJsvL79z7CdD0sZl_H9E&amp;_hsmi=80892992\">Church\nLife Journal<\/a>, Scott Beauchamp reflects on the Gruen Effect.&nbsp; This principle, named for developer Victor\nGruen, concerns how to design an environment conducive to shopping.&nbsp; Beauchamp offers this summary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>The mall itself has to be comfortable, heated or air-conditioned and giving the impression of near sterility.\u00a0 And it helps if there\u2019s a sense of abundance.\u00a0 Scarcity forces one to consider material necessity.\u00a0 But most importantly, the mall needs to be sealed off from the rest of the world.\u00a0 There should not be any worries about the weather outside or politics or the environment . . . . The factor which defines the Gruen Effect . . . is the eradication of moment to moment time and the establishment of a sort of synthetic sense of eternity.\u00a0 The creation of a comfortable stasis or an illusion of escape from the vagaries of the embodied world.\u00a0 Which is to say, the world itself.\u00a0 This is the secret heart of the shopping mall\u2019s utopian aspirations: to become an <em>ersatz<\/em> eternity.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Generally,\nmalls do not feature clocks or windows.&nbsp;\nSkylights, if there are any, are typically opaque, shielding shoppers\nfrom any perception of light, darkness, or weather conditions.&nbsp; As Beauchamp puts it, \u201cyour sense of being\nsituated in a specific time and space deteriorates.\u201d&nbsp; There is no outside factor to distract the\nshopper from shopping.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I wonder if\nor to what extent there is a parallel Gruen Effect in our liturgical\nenvironments and practices.&nbsp; In his 1977 <em>The\nEucharist and Human Liberation<\/em>, the late Sri Lankan theologian Tissa\nBalasuriya wrote:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>[Some find in liturgical uniformity] a wonderful witness to the oneness of the church.\u00a0 But it does also provide a very supple instrument for the domestication of believers.\u00a0 The Mass adjusts itself very little to even major social revolutions or calamities.\u00a0 Generally the Christian community continues to worship as if nothing much has taken place over the centuries.\u00a0 The impression created is that here is an efficacious way of personal sanctification.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many figures (Virgil Michel, Karl Rahner, Bernard H\u00e4ring, Juan Luis Segundo, Don Saliers, Vigen Guroian, and Louis-Marie Chauvet to name just a few) have written about a connection between liturgy and ethics, a connection each of them sees as intrinsic.\u00a0 How well this connection is perceived in our Sunday assemblies is a separate question.\u00a0 In the more than 40 years since the appearance of Balasuriya\u2019s book, does his point hold?\u00a0 Are our liturgies marked by \u201ca synthetic sense of eternity\u201d and \/ or an \u201cescape from the vagaries of the embodied world\u201d?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Are our liturgies marked by \u201ca synthetic sense of
