This would be a great book for use in an RCIA process in a parish or college Newman center.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Why does it matter?<\/strong> Leonard\u2019s approach is both\naccessible and entertaining, especially for those who are largely un-catechized\nbut seriously searching for the meaning of the sacraments today. This is a very\ntimely book given that largely secularized Catholic young people often lack the\ncultural underpinnings that help give an appreciation for the liturgical\ntradition. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What intrigued me the most? <\/strong>The author\u2019s familiarity\nwith movies that both contrast and illustrate his presentation of the\nsacraments. Also, his liberal use of entertaining personal anecdotes helps to\n\u201chumanize\u201d what can sometimes be very dry explanations of these key\ncelebrations of God\u2019s grace in the life of a Catholic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What will get you thinking?<\/strong> The author does not shy\naway from controversial issues related to the sacraments such as clerical\ncelibacy, the possibility of women priests, and gay marriage. The topics are\ntreated with an eye to the history of the sacraments as well as to the current\ncultural moment that has given pastoral relevance to the questions.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What will most inspire you?<\/strong> This book argues\npersuasively for the continued relevance of the sacraments in our lives of\nfaith. The author is a natural storyteller and his stories give evangelical\nclarity and perspective to living the Christian life. For a preacher it is a\ntreasure trove of illustrations that would be helpful in preparing homilies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Quibble.<\/strong> It is amazing how much erudition is contained in these pages\u2014erudition that is worn lightly in order to make the presentation accessible. It would have been helpful for the author to have included a section at the end entitled \u201cfor further reading\u201d for those, inspired by the book, who would like to delve more into the wide arrange of sacramental topics presented in the text. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Leonard, Richard, SJ. <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.paulistpress.com\/Products\/0650-9\/hatch-match-and-dispatch.aspx\">Hatch, Match, and Dispatch: A Catholic Guide to Sacraments<\/a><\/em>.
