The 4-centimeter\n<em>[1.5 inches] <\/em>wide stole is handwoven\nfrom wool or silk, the monastery stated. The stole is attached to the top seam on\nthe left shoulder and hangs freely down the front. These female and male presiders for liturgical celebrations should be recognizable at first glance,\u201d says the announcement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Integrating the spectrum of liturgical colors<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cCustomers\nsense the need for female and male ministers who lead services to wear a\nrecognizable sign,\u201d said Manuela Camichel, leader of Fahr Monastery\u2019s vestment workshop,\nupon inquiry. A further need is that these worship leaders be able to integrate\nthe liturgical colors into their apparel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>No clarifications\nwere made as to whether the innovation is consistent with the liturgical\ndirectives. \u201cWe offer this just as our competitors do,\u201d said Camichel. \u201cThe\nrelevant authorities decide who wears the stole.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"318\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Stola-318x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-50285\" srcset=\"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Stola-318x400.jpg 318w, https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Stola-239x300.jpg 239w, https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Stola-768x966.jpg 768w, https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Stola.jpg 816w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 318px) 100vw, 318px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Reserved to clergy<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According\nto Gunda Br\u00fcske of the Liturgical Institute for German-speaking Switzerland, the\nname \u201cstole\u201d for the new product is particularly \u201ctouchy.\u201d Stoles are pieces of\nclothing that are reserved to priests and deacons. She finds understandable the\ndesire for a colorful marker for non-clerics. She sometimes hears from those in\nthe field the wish that their white albs, like those of altar servers, bear elements\nof color of the church year. The triangular sign called a \u201cscapular\u201d is an\nanother attempt, but it is not aesthetically satisfactory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According\nto Br\u00fcske, unfortunately there was no prior discussion of the matter between\nthe monastery and the Liturgical Institute.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Contact with the abbot<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Within the Swiss Bishops\u2019 Conference, Abbot Urban Federer is responsible for liturgy; at the same time, as abbot of Einsiedeln he is abbot of Fahr Monastery in a double-monastery arrangement. When asked, Einsiedeln Abbey stated that \u201cthe innovative vestment workshop of Fahr Monastery\u201d has sought out contact with the abbot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Concerning\nthe most recent creation of Fahr Monastery, Abbot Urban was able to state the\nfollowing: \u201cFor them the designation \u2018stole\u2019 is seen as a sort of working\ntitle, since \u2018stole\u2019 in general means a cloth that is more like a shawl than a\nliturgical vestment. The danger of confusion with the priestly or diaconal\nstole is entirely seen at Fahr. The vestment workshop is open to future\ndiscussion around an appropriate designation.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201cDecorative stripes for laity\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nvestment workshop of Fahr Monastery is not the only one to offer pieces of\nclothing for non-clerics. There are, for example, a so-called \u201cdecorative\nstripes for laity\u201d from the vestment maker Heimgartner in Wil, St. Gall canton.\nThese are secured with snap fasteners, so that the stripes can be changed\naccording to the liturgical colors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Translated and reprinted with kind permission of <\/em>kath.ch katholisches medienzentrum.
