{"id":49704,"date":"2019-10-30T19:15:23","date_gmt":"2019-10-31T00:15:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/?p=49704"},"modified":"2019-11-12T12:11:09","modified_gmt":"2019-11-12T18:11:09","slug":"pope-francis-responds-to-the-proposed-amazonian-rite","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/index.php\/2019\/10\/30\/pope-francis-responds-to-the-proposed-amazonian-rite\/","title":{"rendered":"Pope Francis Responds to the Proposed Amazonian Rite"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As PrayTell already&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/index.php\/2019\/10\/26\/synod-in-rome-affirms-an-amazonian-rite\/\">reported<\/a>&nbsp;the recently concluded Amazonian Synod called for the establishment of an \u201cAmazonian Rite\u201d in its final document.&nbsp;&nbsp;However Pope Francis in his off the cuff&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/zenit.org\/articles\/pope-francis-off-the-cuff-about-the-synod\/\">remarks<\/a>&nbsp;at the end of the Synod seems to have cast some doubt on the proposal.&nbsp;&nbsp;The final document had proposed that \u201cthe new organization of the Church in the Amazon must form a competent commission for studying and dialoguing, according to uses and customs of ancestral peoples, on the development of an Amazonian rite which expresses the Amazonian liturgical, theological, disciplinary, and spiritual patrimony, with special reference to what the&nbsp;<em>Lumen Gentium<\/em>&nbsp;affirms for Oriental churches\u201d (<em>Final Document<\/em>&nbsp;119).&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His remarks are not in perfect prose but I think that in his comments Pope Francis seems to&nbsp;&nbsp;be in favour of giving the task of composing a new Amazonian Rite to the Congregation for Divine Worship in Rome and not simply leaving it to the local Church:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>There was talk of a ritual reform, to open to rites. This is within the competence of the Congregation for Divine Worship, and it can do so following the criteria, and I know they can do very well, and make the necessary proposals that inculturation calls for, but always stress the overflowing, always go beyond. Not only ritual organization, &lt;but&gt; organization of another sort, what the Lord will inspire. Of the 23 Churches with their own rite that are mentioned in the Document, which came out at least in the pre-Document, I believe that at least 18 if not 19 are&nbsp;<em>sui&nbsp;<\/em>iuris Churches, which began small and build traditions up to where the Lord leads us, &lt;and&gt; not be afraid of organizations that guard a special life. Always with the help of Holy Mother Church, Mother of all, who guides us on this path so that we don\u2019t separate. Don\u2019t be afraid of them.<\/p><cite>Zenit translation<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Of course it is early days and one would imagine that both the local Church and the CDW would be involved in this proposed project. Indeed it is also possible that the project may never go beyond the drawing board (we will have to wait and see how the Post Synodal Exhortation deals with the matter). But initially it seems that it won&#8217;t be primarily a local project that would come to the CDW for a <i>recognitio<\/i> or a <em>confirmatio<\/em>. He is a presbyter of the Archdiocese of Newark, NJ who has ministered in parishes on both sides of the Atlantic. He has spent many years as an academic mentor to seminarians. Neil currently serves as Programme Director for Liturgical Programmes at the Pontifical University and as Acting Director of the National Centre for Liturgy. Since 2020 he has also served as the Executive Secretary for Liturgy to the Irish Catholic Bishops Conference. He has studied at Seton Hall University (BA, MDiv), the University of Notre Dame (MA), and St Vladimir\u2019s Orthodox Theological Seminary (MTh). He holds a Doctorate in Theology (Ph.D.) from St Patrick\u2019s College, Maynooth and is in the process of completing a second doctorate (D.D) in the Pontifical Facultad de Teolog\u00eda Redemptoris Mater in Callao, Peru. Neil has published a translation of the Confessio of St. Patrick: St. Patrick: His Confession and Other Works (Totowa, NJ, 2009), as well editing the third edition of Fredrick Edward Warren\u2019s The Liturgy and Ritual of the Celtic Church (Piscataway, NJ, 2010). In 2011 the University of Notre Dame Press published The Eucharist in Pre-Norman Ireland an adaptation of his doctoral thesis and in 2017 the Alcuin Club published his Liturgical Orientation: The Position of the President at the Eucharist. His articles have appeared in The Irish Theological Quarterly, New Blackfriars, The Furrow and Antiphon.
