Neil Xavier O\u2019Donoghue published a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/index.php\/2019\/09\/23\/spanish-book-of-the-chair\/\">post<\/a>&nbsp;on the new Spanish Book of the Chair.&nbsp;&nbsp;Yesterday I received the following note from an official of the CDW:&nbsp;<strong>\u201cThe Congregation for Divine Worship would like to clarify that this publication has not been voted on or approved by the Spanish Episcopal Conference, nor was it ever presented to this Congregation for confirmation.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We are pleased to publish this note, along with Fr. Neil\u2019s response below, and we wish to thank all those in the CDW for the important work they do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>awr<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"text-align:center\">++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I readily admit that I am not privy to any of the discussion in the Bishops\u2019 Conference of any region, nor do I have any particular information regarding the relationship between any of these Conferences and the&nbsp;Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I was simply commenting on how I saw a valuable liturgical resource in Spain and personally considered it to be pastorally useful.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Working from information in the public domain, I note the fact that the members of the USCCB felt the need to vote on their&nbsp;<em>Excerpts from the Roman Missal<\/em>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/about\/divine-worship\/newsletter\/upload\/newsletter-2015-12.pdf\">submit<\/a>&nbsp;it to the CDW for a&nbsp;<em>recognitio&nbsp;<\/em>prior to its 2017 publication. They&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/dev.usccb.org\/about\/media-relations\/upload\/action-item-04-divine-worship-roman-missal-book-for-use-at-chair.pdf\">explicitly said<\/a>&nbsp;they were following number&nbsp;82 of&nbsp;<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/roman_curia\/congregations\/ccdds\/documents\/rc_con_ccdds_doc_20010507_liturgiam-authenticam_en.html\">Liturgiam authenticam<\/a><\/em>. The members of the Bishops\u2019 Conference of England and Wales and the members of the Bishops\u2019 Conference of Scotland followed a similar route prior to the 2018 publication of their&nbsp;<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ctsbooks.org\/excerpts-from-the-roman-missal\">Excerpts from the Roman Missal<\/a><\/em>. For whatever reason, none of these English-speaking conferences added any material to the book that wasn\u2019t already contained in the Third Edition of the Roman Missal and none of them called the volume \u201cBook of the Chair.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However the Spanish&nbsp;book seems to have followed a different route. It&nbsp;is entitled&nbsp;<em>Libro de la Sede<\/em>&nbsp;(Book of the Chair).&nbsp;It was published in 2018 by&nbsp;Libros Lit\u00fargicos Conferencia Episcopal Espa\u00f1ola. The copyright page says that it was \u201cprepared by the secretariat of the Bishops\u2019 Commission for Liturgy of the Spanish Bishops\u2019 Conference\u201d and it has an imprimatur for the \u201cofficial liturgical texts\u201d granted by Cardinal Ricardo Bl\u00e1zquez P\u00e9rez, President of the Spanish Bishops\u2019 Conference. The Copyright page carries the note that: \u201cThe text of this work is the property of the Spanish Bishops\u2019 Conference, which has the authority to grant reproduction rights as established by the Instruction&nbsp;<em>Liturgiam Authenticam<\/em>, promulgated by the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments (28 March 2001), as well as by the relevant civil laws and norms.\u201d The title page of the book can be seen here:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-file\"><a href=\"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/Libro-de-la-Sede-title-page.pdf\">Libro-de-la-Sede-title-page<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/Libro-de-la-Sede-title-page.pdf\" class=\"wp-block-file__button\" download>Download<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>This Spanish book contains a mixture of material from the official texts of the 2015 Spanish edition of the Third Edition of the Roman Missal and from the 1976 Spanish edition of the R.C.I.A., alongside these official texts is also includes other texts (introductions, texts for the prayer of the faithful, etc.). The book is published by the Spanish Bishops\u2019 Conference, who apparently published it without holding a vote of the full membership of their Conference and without submitting it to the&nbsp;CDW for recognition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It remains to be seen why the English-speaking bishops submitted their books to the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Spanish bishops did not. Again the main point of my reflection was that I liked the Spanish book and thought that a similar edition would be useful in English. If anyone would like to add any further information or clarification I would be happy to receive it and if I have made any factual errors please point them out to me and I will gladly correct them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fr. He is a presbyter of the Archdiocese of Newark, NJ who has ministered in parishes on both sides of the Atlantic. He has spent many years as an academic mentor to seminarians. Neil currently serves as Programme Director for Liturgical Programmes at the Pontifical University and as Acting Director of the National Centre for Liturgy. Since 2020 he has also served as the Executive Secretary for Liturgy to the Irish Catholic Bishops Conference. He has studied at Seton Hall University (BA, MDiv), the University of Notre Dame (MA), and St Vladimir\u2019s Orthodox Theological Seminary (MTh). He holds a Doctorate in Theology (Ph.D.) from St Patrick\u2019s College, Maynooth and is in the process of completing a second doctorate (D.D) in the Pontifical Facultad de Teolog\u00eda Redemptoris Mater in Callao, Peru. Neil has published a translation of the Confessio of St. Patrick: St. Patrick: His Confession and Other Works (Totowa, NJ, 2009), as well editing the third edition of Fredrick Edward Warren\u2019s The Liturgy and Ritual of the Celtic Church (Piscataway, NJ, 2010). In 2011 the University of Notre Dame Press published The Eucharist in Pre-Norman Ireland an adaptation of his doctoral thesis and in 2017 the Alcuin Club published his Liturgical Orientation: The Position of the President at the Eucharist. His articles have appeared in The Irish Theological Quarterly, New Blackfriars, The Furrow and Antiphon.
