I have searched through Pray Tell in vain, looking for a\nthread that I thought I remembered about this topic. Perhaps it was on another\nforum. The discussion was about the replacement, in the proposed texts of what eventually\nbecame the 2010 Missal, of \u201cour sacrifice\u201d with \u201cmy sacrifice and yours\u201d. If\nanyone knows where to find it, I should be grateful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The reason \u201cour sacrifice\u201d originally substituted for \u201cmy\nsacrifice and yours\u201d in the years following 1969 was because people came to\nrealize that the latter phrase sounds as if it is making the non-ordained into second-class\ncitizens, as well as possibly indicating to the unwary that there are two sacrifices,\nthe priest\u2019s and everyone else\u2019s, whereas we know that we all offer a single\nsacrifice as one worshipping body.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The point of all this is that one of those posting in the\nthread that I have not succeeded in finding happened to mention that the\ntranslation we use of meum ac vestrum\nsacrificium<\/em> is not really accurate. His argument hinged on the fact that\nthe Latin ac<\/em> is a rather stronger\nconjunction than the simple et<\/em>. It\nbinds words more closely together. The problem is that in English we only have\nthe single word \u201cand\u201d to do duty for both. <\/p>\n\n\n\n To put it clearly, meum\net vestrum sacrificium<\/em> would mean \u201cmy sacrifice and yours\u201d, but meum ac vestrum sacrificium<\/em> doesn\u2019t mean\nexactly that. It is the conjunction ac<\/em>\nwhich makes meum ac vestrum<\/em> function\nas if it were a single adjective. A good, literal translation would be \u201cmy-and-your\nsacrifice\u201d, but that doesn\u2019t work in good English. The nearest we could get\nwould in fact be \u201cour sacrifice\u201d !<\/p>\n\n\n\n The French, of course, get round the problem neatly by\nsaying \u201cLet us pray together, at the moment of offering the sacrifice of the\nwhole Church\u201d, to which the response is \u201cFor the glory of God and the salvation\nof the world\u201d. In German, the phrase is mein\nund euer Opfer<\/em>, i.e. \u201cmy and your sacrifice\u201d. Spanish-speakers have este\nsacrificio, m\u00edo y de ustedes,<\/em>\nwhich would be \u201cthis sacrifice, mine and yours\u201d. I am sure Pray Tell readers\ncan provide many other languages, too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n I have heard a number of priests say \u201cthis sacrifice, which\nis mine and yours\u201d. That is an improvement, if not yet as close to the Latin as\n\u201cour sacrifice\u201d would be. I suspect that those in Rome who insisted on changing\n\u201cour sacrifice\u201d back to \u201cmy sacrifice and yours\u201d will not readily admit that\nthey were in error in this regard, nor readily agree to change back.
