But he\u2019s known primarily as a writer of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Martin_Mosebach\" target=\"_blank\">some reputation<\/a>. The German Academy for Language and Literature praised him for &#8220;combining stylistic splendor with original storytelling that demonstrates a humorous awareness of history.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>But on liturgy? Not so much. In <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newliturgicalmovement.org\/2010\/10\/martin-mosebach-on-old-roman-missal.html\" target=\"_blank\">his essay<\/a> \u201cThe Old Roman Missal: Loss and Rediscovery,\u201d we find this on the pre-Vatican II Offertory prayers:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>These prayers come from earliest times; they speak, for the first time in human history, of the dignity of man, a dignity God gave to his creatures from the very beginning, a dignity that was wondrously renewed by Jesus\u2019 sacrificial death.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Earliest times?? Jungmann, anyone? Dignity of man for the first time?? Genesis chapter 1, anyone? Or Psalm 8?<\/p>\n<p>A collection of his essays on liturgy is available in translation at Ignatius, <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Heresy-Formlessness-Martin-Mosebach\/dp\/1586171275\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;s=books&amp;qid=1287667321&amp;sr=8-1\" target=\"_blank\">The Heresy of Formlessness<\/a><\/em>. The heretics here would be pretty much\u00a0 all of us. I recommend the book in this highly qualified sense \u2013 it will help you keep up on the sort of liturgical ideas now spreading in the Roman Catholic Church.
