and Baptism"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>I offer here a pictorial reflection on the Blessing of the Water (RCIA 222A).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&amp;&amp;&amp;&amp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Father,                                                                                                                                                                you give us grace through sacramental signs,                                                which tell us of the wonders of your unseen power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In baptism we use your gift of water,                                                              which you have made a rich symbol of the grace                                             you give us in this sacrament.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the very dawn of creation                                                                                your Spirit breathed on the waters,                                                               making them the wellspring of holiness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The waters of the great flood                                                                                 you made a sign of the waters of baptism                                                           that make an end of sin                                                                                           and a new beginning of goodness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img boat,<\/em><\/li><li><em>the lectern was made of old wood with a ship\u2019s wheel mounted on the front,<\/em><\/li><li><em>the chalice was carved from wood of a shipwrecked boat (though lined with silver).<\/em><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><em>According to Genesis, Noah\u2019s boat provided safe refuge to its passengers.&nbsp; Lampedusa is a stark reminder that some boats are not safe.]<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Through the waters of the Red Sea                                                                       you led Israel out of slavery                                                                                       to be an image of God\u2019s holy people,                                                                     set free from sin by                                           give to this water the grace of your Son,                                                                so that in the sacrament of baptism                                                                             all those whom you have created in your likeness                                              may be cleansed from sin                                                                                      and rise to a new birth of innocence                                                                       by water and the Holy Spirit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We ask you, Father, with your Son                                                                            to send the Holy Spirit upon the waters of this font.                                                  May all who are buried in Christ in the death of                                         baptism                                                                                                                        rise also with him to newness of life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We ask this through Christ our\nLord.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&amp;&amp;&amp;&amp;&amp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What does it mean to celebrate baptism in a world where refugees drown?  I suspect the answer is in the same ballpark as the meaning of Eucharist in a world where people starve or suffer malnutrition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We celebrate sacraments not because we do NOT need them but because we so badly DO need them.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>May those who died fleeing\nhardship be in the eternal embrace of the Just One.&nbsp; May those who are baptized come to the aid of\nall who
