Mark Francis, CS<\/em>V<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In reading <a href=\"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/index.php\/2019\/06\/22\/liturgical-inculturation-in-the-amazon-not-so-fast\/\">this article<\/a> I was struck by what seems to be a problematic presupposition that the Roman Rite is not a Western European cultural product and that it almost automatically adapts itself to all local cultures. This leads the author to question the proposal of the <em>instrumentum laboris<\/em> for more profound inculturation of the liturgy in Amazonia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In speaking about liturgical inculturation, it is important to note that the structure, signs and symbols of our current liturgical practice renewed by Vatican II was inspired by classic 6<sup>th<\/sup> century Roman basilican worship that valued \u201cnoble simplicity.\u201d This \u201cnoble simplicity&#8221; was aptly described by the liturgical historian Edmund Bishop and featured in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/hist_councils\/ii_vatican_council\/documents\/vat-ii_const_19631204_sacrosanctum-concilium_en.html\">Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy<\/a>, especially article 34. &nbsp;Given the Constitutions\u2019 \u201cmagna charta\u201d of inculturation found in articles 37-40, this style of worship, shorn of medieval accretions, was to be a kind of <em>terminus a quo<\/em> (the beginning point) for further adaptation\/ inculturation of the liturgy around the world\u2014especially in non-Western cultures like those of the Amazon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite\nthe fact that, as O\u2019Donaghue has pointed out, \u201cmillions of\npeople in the Amazon region have already been exposed to the Christian Gospel\nfor centuries\u201d it is questionable that these same people have been actively\ninvolved in shaping their particular way of celebrating the faith in the\nofficial liturgy of the Church. The Tridentine Rite forbade local variations,\nso until the aftermath of Vatican II, the interior of the rite itself was\nimpervious to local culture.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because the official liturgy could not express itself in the\nidioms of the people, popular religious practice naturally arose alongside the\nofficial liturgical forms brought by the European missionaries. It is for that\nreason that the <em>instrumentum laboris<\/em> speaks respectfully of popular\nreligion as having a role to play in helping those who Pope Francis has\nreferred to as \u201cel pueblo santo y fiel\u201d (God\u2019s holy and faithful people) to shape\nthe liturgy to enable it to speak more eloquently. \u201cThe (local Amazonian) communities\nask for a greater appreciation, accompaniment, and promotion of the piety with\nwhich the poor and simple people express their faith through images, symbols,\ntraditions, rites and other sacramentals\u201d (126 c). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is here that we get at the heart of the issue: Who should\ndecide whether or not there is a need for further inculturation? Fr. O\u2019Donaghue\nseems to presuppose that any concession for inculturation should come from the\nside of the universal Church. The instrumentum laboris, along with Pope Francis\nin <em>Evangelii Gaudium <\/em>and <em>Magnum Principium<\/em>, proposes a valid\ndecentralization that enables the voice of the local church to be heard,\nwhether in the establishment of criteria for choosing priests or the manner of\ncelebrating the liturgy. It is not those of us belonging to European and North\nAmerican cultures to have the final word whether or not inculturation is needed\nin non-Western cultures. The varied and rich contributions of the many cultures\nof Amazonia should finally be allowed to be reflected in their appropriation of\nthe Roman Rite\u2014to their benefit and that of the entire global church.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Mark-Francis.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-48035\" width=\"180\" height=\"160\" srcset=\"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Mark-Francis.jpg 360w, https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Mark-Francis-300x268.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 180px) 100vw, 180px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Viatorian Fr.
