{"id":47664,"date":"2019-06-05T11:22:09","date_gmt":"2019-06-05T16:22:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/?p=47664"},"modified":"2019-10-10T06:48:27","modified_gmt":"2019-10-10T11:48:27","slug":"does-preaching-make-any-difference-whatsoever","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/index.php\/2019\/06\/05\/does-preaching-make-any-difference-whatsoever\/","title":{"rendered":"Does Preaching Make <i>Any<\/i> Difference Whatsoever?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In St. John\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.csbsju.edu\/sot\">School of Theology and Seminary<\/a>, we are blessed with the very able homiletics coaching of Dr. Dawn Carrillo. With Dawn we have worked out a model for coaching our students who preach. It works like this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every Thursday the grad school community has a half-hour ecumenical Midday Prayer service, with Chapel Choir under Dr. Andr\u00e9 Heywood singing every week. Given the setting, this ecumenical service in fact oftentimes has a Catholic and Benedictine spirit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Students who are in their second semester or later are eligible to sign up to preach. Their reflections are to be c. 5-6 minutes long. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To give our students experience working with a lectionary and preaching upon a text not of their choice, we devise a lectionary each semester. This is oftentimes based on <em><a href=\"https:\/\/giveusthisday.org\/#book\/\">Give Us This Day<\/a>,<\/em> whose readings generally reflect the themes of the Mass readings. (We don\u2019t use the Mass lectionary because this isn\u2019t Mass, and because many of our students attend daily Mass and will hear the Mass readings there.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Student preachers are expected to submit their texts to Dawn ahead of\ntime, and they strengthen their texts based on her coaching. She gives the final\napproval in order for the reflection to take place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then, students who preach are asked to find two feedback peers. After the service, the preacher, the two peers, and a faculty member meet for a brief feedback session of c. 10-15 minutes. Faculty in all areas of theology take their turn guiding these sessions. These are the questions Dawn has provided for use at the feedback sessions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>How\ndid God\u2019s Word and the preaching touch your life today? (OR) What did you\nexperience in hearing God\u2019s Word in today\u2019s preaching?<\/li><li>Will\nthis preaching make a difference in your life this week? How?<\/li><li>Are\nthere ways in which today\u2019s preacher might have improved in communicating the\nmessage?<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I must admit, when we began this I didn\u2019t like the second question, and I said so to Dawn. This question is about the <em>listener,<\/em> I said, but we want to talk about the <em>homily.<\/em> What we listeners do with it is our business. We should focus on the preacher\u2019s technique \u2013 her presence, pacing, volume, content, organization, and the like.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dawn pushed\nback. And rightly so, I\u2019ve come to realize. I was mistaken.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If preaching\ndoesn\u2019t make a difference in the lives of listeners, it\u2019s a waste of time. The\nwhole point of a homily is to change lives. Homilists should think precisely about\npeople\u2019s lives, and evaluation of the homily should take up exactly that\ndynamic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I\u2019ve come to\nexperience Dawn\u2019s second question as something of a gift in my life, and a real\ngame-changer for how I think about my own preaching. It\u2019s become clearer to me\nthat my task is not to explain religious things, teach doctrine, give\nhistorical and theological context to understand the readings better, or the\nlike. My task is to <em>name and encourage\nthe ways that the God of the Scriptures is active in people\u2019s lives today.<\/em>\nThanks for that insight, Dawn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another gift to me has been the regular posting at <em>Pray Tell<\/em> of homilies by Fr. Ed Foley. (E.g. <a href=\"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/index.php\/2019\/05\/26\/ars-praedicandi-ed-foleys-on-the-sixth-sunday-of-easter\/\">here<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/index.php\/2019\/05\/19\/ars-praedicandi-ed-foleys-on-the-fifth-sunday-of-easter\/\">here<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/index.php\/2019\/05\/01\/ars-praedicandi-ed-foleys-on-the-second-sunday-of-easter\/\">here<\/a>.) Repeatedly, I\u2019ve been powerfully hit between the eyes by the ways that Ed speaks to the real world and real lives.
