{"id":47633,"date":"2019-05-30T09:47:18","date_gmt":"2019-05-30T14:47:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/?p=47633"},"modified":"2019-06-04T06:43:31","modified_gmt":"2019-06-04T11:43:31","slug":"forthcoming-italian-missal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/index.php\/2019\/05\/30\/forthcoming-italian-missal\/","title":{"rendered":"Forthcoming Italian Missal"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Avvenire<\/em>, <a href=\"\"><\/a>the daily newspaper of the Italian bishops\u2019 conference, reports that <a href=\"https:\/\/avvenire.it\/chiesa\/pagine\/messale-arriva-il-via-libera\">the revised translation of the missal for Italy<\/a> has been approved by Pope Francis. At the bishops\u2019 most recent general assembly, conference president Cardinal Gualtiero Bassetti announced that Francis authorized the publication of the &nbsp;revised translation of the third edition of the <em>Messale Romano<\/em> which the bishops had approved last November. It will be some months before the books are printed and available for liturgical use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Changes to Lord&#8217;s Prayer and <em>Gloria<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Lord\u2019s Prayer will no longer say \u201cand lead us not into temptation\u201d <em>(e non ci indurre in tentazione),<\/em> but will become \u201cdo not let us fall\/be abandoned into temptation\u201d <em>(non abbandonarci alla tentazione).<\/em> This will bring the prayer in line with the translation of this passage in the Italian translation of the Bible the bishops approved in 2008.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The\n<em>Gloria<\/em> will also be revised. \u201cPeace\non earth to people of good will\u201d <em>(pace in\nterra agli uomini di buona volont\u00e0)<\/em> will become \u201cPeace on Earth to people\nbeloved by God\u201d <em>(pace in terra agli\nuomini, amati dal Signore).<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In\nthe Revised New American Bible of the U.S. Catholic lectionary, these two\npassages read:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>\u201cGlory\nto God in the highest and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests\u201d\n(Luke 2:14);<\/li><li>\u201cand\ndo not subject us to the final test\u201d (Matthew 6:13, Luke 11:4).<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cFor you and for all\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Of special interest is the contentious issue of the translation of <em>pro multis<\/em> in the institution narrative of the Eucharistic Prayer. In many countries this was translated after the Second Vatican Council \u201cfor all\u201d \u2013 in Italian, <em>per tutti.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The\n2001 instruction of the Holy See <em>Liturgiam\nauthenticam<\/em> called for more literal vernacular translations of official Latin\nliturgical texts, and also gave Rome complete authority over the supervision\nand approval of vernacular liturgical texts. In 2006, Rome directed that <em>pro multis<\/em> be translated \u201cfor many.\u201d\nPope Benedict XVI was particularly insistent on this point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sources tell <em>Pray Tell<\/em> that the forthcoming Italian missal will <em>not<\/em> alter this text, as Benedict XVI would have wished, but will retain <em>per tutti \u2013 <\/em>\u201cfor all.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Shifting Winds in\nTranslation Policy<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In September, 2017 Pope Francis issued <em>Magnum principium<\/em>, which called for translations which are both faithful to Latin and respectful of the characteristics of the receptor language. It is this second quality which was seen to suffer in the overly literalist translations prepared since <em>Liturgiam authenticam.<\/em> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More significantly, Pope Francis restored authority over translations to bishops\u2019 conferences, as the Second Vatican Council had decreed, and rolled back the creeping centralism of previous decades at odds with the Council\u2019s decisions.
