\u201cAn act of cultural vandalism to the Catholic Church in this country is taking place before our eyes,\u201d The Tablet<\/a><\/em> reports out of London<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It concerns the plan for the world-famous, highly renowned\nchoir of men and boys at Westminster Cathedral to sing four days a week rather\nthan six. The boy choir program will shift from full-boarding to weekly\nboarding, with the boys going home on Friday and being brought back by their\nparents for Sunday singing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This will mean that recruitment of boys will necessarily be\nlimited to the local area, to the exclusion of boys who live father away (in\nWales, for example) and until now could board the entire week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is disturbing to hear that the change was announced by\nthe school management without a proper process of open consultation with\nparents or choir staff. Cardinal Vincent Nichols endorses the planned change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The rationale put forth by the school is that recruiting\nchoir boys \u2013 which is certainly a formidable challenge \u2013 will be enhanced if local\nparents are able to have their children at home every weekend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The musical price is high \u2013 hence the charge of \u201ccultural\nvandalism.\u201d The quality of music from Westminster Cathedral Choir has soared to\nthe heights it does because the choristers sing together six days a week. With\nthe shift to four days a week, it is likely that WCC will no longer be at the\nlevel of the Anglican establishments at Westminster Abbey and St. Paul\u2019s\nCathedral which still have full-boarding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Telegraph<\/a><\/em> reports<\/a> that parents have written to the Cardinal to protest the plan. It would strike \u201ca critical blow to an important part of our national, international and Catholic heritage and tradition,\u201d they write. It will \u201cnot only fail to support, but will actively damage the world-class standing of the choir.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This story will be worth watching. The hope in some quarters\nis that the plan can still be stopped and proper consultation carried out\nbetween school, choristers, parents, cathedral musicians, and the master of\nmusic.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
