{"id":47149,"date":"2019-04-25T14:24:34","date_gmt":"2019-04-25T19:24:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/?p=47149"},"modified":"2019-05-04T22:28:00","modified_gmt":"2019-05-05T03:28:00","slug":"do-you-sing-even-when-you-dont-want-to","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/index.php\/2019\/04\/25\/do-you-sing-even-when-you-dont-want-to\/","title":{"rendered":"Do You Sing Even when You Don&#8217;t Want to?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>We\u2019re in the Easter season in the West, which brings with it a plethora of excellent hymns&#8211;hymns dancing with alleluia\u2019s, cascading melodies, and majestic triumph as we sing of the Risen One.&nbsp; I think of tunes like \u201cEASTER HYMN\u201d (Jesus Christ is Risen Today), \u201cSONNE DER GERECHTIGKEIT\u201d (At the Lamb\u2019s High Feast We Sing), \u201cO FILII ET FILIAE\u201d (O Sons and Daughters).&nbsp; Or, perhaps the delightful \u201cNO\u00cbL NOUVELET\u201d (Now the Green Blade Rises).&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com\/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcRPsttmIMbuFB9BpnV5x2N3w-QW_sFEkJDs0wE50VvgZZ3TUd4YoA\" alt=\"Image result for easter hymns o filii et filiae\" width=\"373\" height=\"265\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But what hymns came to your mind?&nbsp; If you\u2019re Roman Catholic, did songs like \u201cSing to the Mountains\u201d (Dufford and Hytrek, 1975) or \u201cIn the Breaking of the Bread\u201d (Ward, 1986), or the more contemporary \u201cI Will Rise\u201d (Tomlin, 2008) come to mind?&nbsp; What songs has your parish sung during this Eastertide?&nbsp; Better yet, did any songs bring much rejoicing to your heart?&nbsp; Did any songs bring much weeping and gnashing of teeth?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019ve heard a handful of the abovementioned songs thus far this Easter&#8211;and I\u2019ve heard all of them in the long series of Easter seasons throughout my life.&nbsp; Which ones bring me joy, which ones make me feel like I\u2019m in a fantastic musical, and which ones bring the proverbial snobby church musician\u2019s internal eye roll of annoyance?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I should start by affirming that all music, regardless of genre, should be executed well.&nbsp; And, as the 2008 document, <em>Sing to the Lord<\/em> emphasizes, music should foster the participation of the assembled faithful: \u201ceven when listening to [\u2026] the singing of the choir, the assembly continues to participate actively as they \u2018unite themselves interiorly to what the ministers or choirs sing, so that by listening to them they may raise their minds to God.\u2019\u201d (<em>Sing to the Lord <\/em>12; cf <em>Musicam Sacram<\/em> 15).&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Added to this, music perhaps helps the faithful participate most actively in the liturgical moment of the Mass when it attends to the time, feast, and season which that very Mass is celebrating.&nbsp; I surely get my snobby church musician face on when music is vague in its lyrics, unattentive to the Feast we are gathered to celebrate.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.crossroadsinitiative.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/augustine-sing-to-the-lord-a-new-song-w.jpg\" alt=\"Related image\" width=\"376\" height=\"164\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>These just being a few of my \u201crequirements\u201d for well-executed church music or, in this case, Easter hymns, what are \u201crequirements\u201d for <em>me<\/em>, a member of the assembled congregation?&nbsp; How can I sing my song when the contours of the tune are foreign to me?&nbsp; How can I sing if I find the music numbingly boring, or painfully banal?&nbsp; Do I have to sing even when I don\u2019t want to?&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I ask this question entirely to bring judgement upon myself: for, I found myself at a Mass recently in which I <em>could not <\/em>compel myself to put voice to the opening hymn. &nbsp;(Said hymn shall remain nameless and it was not one I have named&#8211;sufficeth to say that it violated one of my above-mentioned principles regarding execution, appropriateness, or inspiration to participation.) &nbsp;I could not find enough strength in my heart to sing&#8211;but I don\u2019t think this response is the right one.&nbsp; I think I should have sung, even if I didn\u2019t want to, because that\u2019s the music that the Church was singing in that moment.&nbsp; By choosing not sing, I was not allowing myself to be the member of Christ\u2019s Body that I am called to be.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I find this line, also from <em>Sing to the Lord<\/em>, somewhat comforting:&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cOur participation in the Liturgy is challenging. Sometimes, our voices do not correspond to the convictions of our hearts. At other times, we are distracted or preoccupied by the cares of the world. But Christ always invites us to enter into song, to rise above our own preoccupations, and to give our entire selves to the hymn of his Paschal Sacrifice for the honor and glory of the Most Blessed Trinity.\u201d <\/p><cite> (<em>Sing to the Lord<\/em> 14) <\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Maybe Easter joy isn\u2019t simply about singing the hymns I want to sing&#8211;or the  <br>hymns which (in my opinion) do a better <em>job <\/em>of singing Easter joy.&nbsp; Opinions don\u2019t do much to build up the Body of Christ.&nbsp; Christian unity in worship, however, does.  <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What songs has your parish sung during this Eastertide?
