{"id":47130,"date":"2019-04-23T09:19:16","date_gmt":"2019-04-23T14:19:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/?p=47130"},"modified":"2019-04-30T00:22:25","modified_gmt":"2019-04-30T05:22:25","slug":"sacred-secular-and-cell-phones","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/index.php\/2019\/04\/23\/sacred-secular-and-cell-phones\/","title":{"rendered":"Sacred, Secular and Cell Phones"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the undergraduate theology\ncourses I teach, I often assign homework questions to my students (e.g.,\ncomparing and contrasting the Beatitudes in Luke and Matthew in one class or\nassessing the view of atheism presented in Gaudium et spes, no. 19).&nbsp; On many occasions, I offer an alternative\nassignment for students interested in current events.&nbsp; Such students can pick a news item from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indcatholicnews.com\/\">Independent\nCatholic News<\/a> and discuss briefly how the news item affected their\nview of Jesus or God or the church.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Recently, a student selected a news story with the title <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indcatholicnews.com\/news\/36914\">\u201cPope advises students: \u2018don\u2019t be slaves to your mobile phones\u2019\u201d<\/a> .\u00a0 When I asked the student (I will call him Joe) how that story affected his view of Jesus or God or the church, he replied that it was interesting to him that the pope would offer a comment on something that had nothing to do with religion.\u00a0 I asked Joe to consider whether it is really true that the question of the use of cell phones has nothing to do with religion.\u00a0 There is the more or less obvious case of Pope Francis\u2019 exhortation <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-pope-mobilephones\/lift-up-your-hearts-not-your-cell-phones-pope-tells-priests-bishops-idUSKBN1D81BB\"> to lift up your hearts, not your cell phones at Mass<\/a>, but even that directive, taken by itself, is quite limited.\u00a0 Instead, I asked Joe and the other students in his discussion group whether they had ever been having an in-person conversation with someone when their conversation partner picked up a phone to read and reply to text messages.\u00a0 I asked whether they had ever \u201cunfriended\u201d someone via cell phone (or learned about being unfriended via cell phone).\u00a0 In his warning about slavery and cell phones, Francis also made clear that \u201cmobile phones are for communication,\u201d which is a great good. I asked my students to ponder how cell phones can disrupt or terminate communication.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In this course, I have frequently\nstressed to students God\u2019s desire to draw all into communion with God.&nbsp; Whatever causes communion to break down works\nagainst that desire.&nbsp; If one holds that\nGod indeed has such a desire, then the question of appropriate use of cell\nphones is a religious question.&nbsp; I\nsuspect that the fundamental issue in my classroom was that of a split between\nprofane (how one uses cell phone) and sacred (God-stuff).&nbsp; This kind of split was criticized by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/hist_councils\/ii_vatican_council\/documents\/vat-ii_cons_19651207_gaudium-et-spes_en.html\">Gaudium\net Spes, no. 43<\/a> as \u201camong the more serious errors of our age.\u201d&nbsp; As a teacher, I ask myself how well I\nrecognize that split in the thinking of my students and, of course, in my own\nthinking.&nbsp; When I do recognize that\nsplit\u2014in others or myself\u2014do I respond with mercy and prodding or with\ncondemnation?&nbsp; I wonder how well my life\nreflects the claim that Christian living is itself sacred liturgy, and that the\nliturgical, though it finds paramount expression in formal worship, is not\nbounded by the walls of the church.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The
