{"id":46279,"date":"2019-03-11T10:46:37","date_gmt":"2019-03-11T15:46:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/?p=46279"},"modified":"2019-03-14T15:57:09","modified_gmt":"2019-03-14T20:57:09","slug":"the-first-temptation-of-ministry","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/index.php\/2019\/03\/11\/the-first-temptation-of-ministry\/","title":{"rendered":"The First Temptation of Ministry?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By now, we all are surely familiar\u2014perhaps wearily so\u2014with the growing religious denominations \u201cnones\u201d and \u201cdones.\u201d An <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/ideas\/archive\/2019\/02\/religion-workism-making-americans-miserable\/583441\/\">article I encountered<\/a> a couple of weeks ago featured yet another option\/alternative to customarily-observed religious practices: \u201cWorkism.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The article explained how there\u2019s a trend or tendency in the\nsurrounding culture for jobs and the workplace to bear the weight of some\nvalues or expectations that were formerly the purview of religious observation.\nApects of people\u2019s lives such as community, meaning, purpose, and so on are\nbeing sought in the place of employment, perhaps unrealistically so, and sometimes\nwith unhealthy results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I don\u2019t intend to demean anybody\u2019s occupation or line of work, and\ndon\u2019t want to unnecessarily aggrandize ministry within the church. The article\ndid point out, however, that some of the most common occupations in our society\n(the author used the example of retail cashiers) were not intended to provide things\nlike meaning or purpose to those who work in those occupations, but were intended\nto allow or provide for other aspects of life (family, community involvement)\nthat were meant to. Like everything else, occupations exist on a spectrum of\npotential for providing a larger context for life, and evolve in this regard\nover the course of time. I think of my own mother, who started her teaching\ncareer during the 1930s in a one-room rural schoolhouse with a wood-burning\nstove; teaching was viewed, at the time, as a respectable choice for an unmarried\nwoman, but surely not a substitute for a husband, home, children, or faith.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since I firmly believe that those of us who work\/minister in\necclesial communities do not escape the influence of the surrounding culture, I\ngot to wondering to what extent \u201cworkism\u201d has infected my own life, work, and\nministry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/3-11-19-workaholic-600x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-46280\" width=\"475\" height=\"316\" srcset=\"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/3-11-19-workaholic-600x400.jpg 600w, https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/3-11-19-workaholic-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/3-11-19-workaholic-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/3-11-19-workaholic-420x280.jpg 420w, https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/3-11-19-workaholic.jpg 1600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 475px) 100vw, 475px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is a tricky situation for those of us who work in ministry,\nand I know I\u2019m not the first to have ruminated on this issue. For the first\ntime, however, I found myself wondering if I run the risk of allowing the work\n(tasks) of my ministry to be the actual source of meaning for my life. I am\nmost familiar with this in my work as a musician, and along with a number of my\ncolleagues, I have asked myself if (or to what extent) I\u2019d be religiously\nobservant if I had to cease my musical activities altogether.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I have accused others (and have been accused myself) of \u201cliturgiolatry.\u201d\nIt\u2019s a real temptation to make the liturgy itself the object of our devotion, or\nlove\u2014even worship. Perhaps there\u2019s a corollary \u201cministrolatry\u201d (\u201cworkism\u201d in a ministerial\ncontext) as well. Since the work\/tasks of liturgical ministry are so intimately\ninterwoven with what ought to be our true source of meaning and purpose\u2014life in\nthe Holy Trinity as members of the Body of Christ\u2014I don\u2019t believe that a\ncomplete separation is possible, or that it would even be healthy. But for\nministers to worship their work will, I believe, ultimately be as unsatisfying and\nunrealistic as it is for those in the secular world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There\u2019s a certain quixotic aspect to the way all of this\nintensifies during Lent, when our spiritual lives should be calling us to silence,\nreflection, prayer, fasting, almsgiving, and a return to the promises of our\nBaptism, yet our day-by-day realities tend to ramp up in terms of tasks and\nworkload, until our liturgical year is crowned by post-Triduum exhaustion. Perhaps\nLent\u2019s spirit of self-examination can help us to take a step back, ask\nourselves if we\u2019re building in time for the disciplines of Lent outside of or\naside from the tasks of ministry. If not, some further examination of\npriorities\u2014including a consideration that someone ELSE might be able to\ncomplete one of our tasks successfully\u2014is in order.
