{"id":46189,"date":"2019-03-04T09:14:58","date_gmt":"2019-03-04T15:14:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/?p=46189"},"modified":"2019-03-09T20:47:55","modified_gmt":"2019-03-10T03:47:55","slug":"monday-morning-confessions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/index.php\/2019\/03\/04\/monday-morning-confessions\/","title":{"rendered":"Monday Morning Confessions"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>When\nI was studying organ at Notre Dame, there was one semester when I\u2019d\nconsistently run into a few of my fellow organists while getting coffee on\nMonday morning. We\u2019d sit and decompress about the previous day a bit. It became\na pattern that whichever of us got there first would get a table and, as the remaining\ntwo or three arrived, would ask \u201cAnything to confess?\u201d I\u2019m not sure how it got\nstarted, but as you can imagine, it quickly became a Monday morning ritual, including\nan \u201cabsolution\u201d at the end, along with the admonition to go and sin no more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most\nof my Monday morning confessions nowadays are relatively trifling: accidentally\nhitting a key during a scripture reading, starting the anthem at too slow a\ntempo, a bit of a time lag at a ritual cue\u2014the worst might be the rare occasion\nthat I use the transposer, and then forget to re-set it. Venial infractions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However,\nsomething a bit more substantive happened with the hymn \u201cO Sing a Song of\nBethlehem.\u201d (Text by Louis Benson, usually sung to FOREST GREEN or KINGSFOLD.) For\nthose who aren\u2019t familiar with the hymn, its four stanzas trace the life of Jesus\nChrist through Bethlehem, Nazareth, Galilee, and Calvary. Over the course of\nyears, I\u2019ve developed small musical ways at the organ to \u201cillustrate\u201d one or\nanother of the stanzas (NEVER all four\u2014that would be a mortal infraction). I\u2019ll\nsometimes imitate a shepherd\u2019s flute over a bagpipe drone in the intro to the first\/Bethlehem\nstanza, or put a \u201cgrowing\u201d figure in the left hand accompaniment for Nazareth,\na walking bass line underneath Galilee. This time around, I decided I\u2019d switch\nup the accompaniment for the fourth, Calvary\/Cross stanza. My usual custom has\nbeen to play some sort of tone cluster on the lowest pedals (kind of an\nearthquake effect) and\/or make the accompanying harmonies very dissonant and\nturgid. ALWAYS with strong support for the congregation\u2019s melody in place, of\ncourse!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But\nthis time, as I was playing the third\/Galilee stanza, the Holy Thursday entrance\nantiphon text \u201cWe should glory in the cross\u201d (based on Galatians 6:14), popped\ninto my head. (Sometimes the Paraclete\u2019s timing could be better.) So I ejected my\nplanned earthquake\/dissonance approach and instead broadened to a regal tempo,\nwith a few trumpet fanfares interspersed for good measure. (And sometimes the\nParaclete sweeps in to resuscitate dormant skills.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"255\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/PTB-Risen-Crucifix-255x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-46190\" srcset=\"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/PTB-Risen-Crucifix-255x400.jpg 255w, https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/PTB-Risen-Crucifix-191x300.jpg 191w, https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/PTB-Risen-Crucifix.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 255px) 100vw, 255px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Later that day, during my self-guided musical mystagogy about the moment, it occurred to me that my usual musical approach to the Cross that morning would have been something of a sonic pentimento (a trace of an earlier painting beneath a layer or layers of paint on a canvas). What showed through was my default understanding of the Cross as <em>only<\/em> an object of discord and dissonance. As often as I\u2019d rehearsed\/played\/sung the Holy Thursday \u201cglory in the cross\u201d text in various musical settings, my spirituality\u2014and, therefore, my ministry\u2014was still shaped much more by, and somewhat stuck in, Good Friday. (Though I do realize that the Good Friday liturgy has its own glorification language about the Cross.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s\nbeen something of a comfort to realize that even with as many ministerial miles\nas I have in the rear-view mirror, there\u2019s still much progress to be made.
