For at\nleast 50 years liturgists have been discussing whether the Penitential Act in\nthe Order of Mass ought to be repositioned. Although for centuries it was in\nthe Prayers at the Foot of Altar and was carried from there into the Introductory\nRites of the 1969 Ordo Missae<\/em>, the\nproposal has been to move it to the end of the Liturgy of the Word. Placing it\nhere after the scriptures have been proclaimed would give a better context for\nrepentance. Or to put it another way, we may not yet be ready for repentance so\nearly in the Mass.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our\nAnglican sisters and brothers have of course had an act of repentance following\nthe Liturgy of the Word since the 1662 Book\nof Common Prayer<\/em>, and this positioning is maintained in Order 2 of Common Worship<\/em> (Order 1 has introductory\nrites similar to the Roman Catholic Mass).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not only\nwould an act of repentance be better later on, but it would be followed by a\nsign of peace and reconciliation before moving into the Liturgy of the\nEucharist. Once again, this has been proposed many times over the years, in\naccordance with Jesus\u2019s own words \u201cIf you are offering your gift at the\naltar and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave\nyour gift there before the altar and go. First be reconciled to your brother,\nand then come and offer your gift.\u201d (Mt 5:23-24).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Benedict\nXVI in his post-synodal apostolic exhortation Sacramentum Caritatis<\/em> (2007) was not happy with the present\npositioning of the Sign of Peace, which he found could be disruptive (para 49).\nHis footnote to this paragraph stated the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(150) Taking\ninto account ancient and venerable customs and the wishes expressed by the\nSynod Fathers, I have asked the competent curial offices to study the\npossibility of moving the sign of peace to another place, such as before the\npresentation of the gifts at the altar. To do so would also serve as a\nsignificant reminder of the Lord’s insistence that we be reconciled with others\nbefore offering our gifts to God (cf. Mt<\/em> 5:23 ff.); cf. Propositio <\/em>23.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That was\ntwelve years ago, but the \u201ccompetent curial offices\u201d have not, so far as we\nknow, produced a response to Benedict\u2019s request….<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We are fast\napproaching Ash Wednesday, a day when the Penitential Act is actually moved to\nthe position we have been discussing. The Penitential Act is omitted on this\nday and replaced by the Blessing and Distribution of Ashes, which comes between\nthe homily and the general intercessions. Even if the blessing and distribution\ntakes places outside Mass, it still follows the Liturgy of the Word.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Can we hope\nthat a future revision of the Missal will recognize that Ash Wednesday is a\nmodel in this regard, and that modifying the Order of Mass to reposition the\nPenitential Act and Sign of Peace at the end of the Liturgy of the Word could\nbe of benefit to worshippers?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
