In an audience with members of the Congregation for Divine Worship<\/a> today, Pope Francis reaffirmed the teachings of the Second Vatican Council on liturgy, including the nature and purpose of the liturgy as reformed in accord with the council. The occasion was a CDW plenary assembly on liturgical formation of the People of God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Francis noted that Pope St. Paul VI founded the CDW 50 years\nago, on May 8, 1969, to publish liturgical books \u201caccording to the criteria and\ndecisions of the council fathers.\u201d He stated, \u201cThe praying tradition of the\nChurch needed renewed expressions, without losing anything of its millennial\nwealth, even rediscovering the treasures of its origins.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Noting the issuance of the reformed calendar, missal, and\nrites for baptism, marriage, and funerals, he said that these were \u201cthe first\nsteps of a journey, to be continued with wise constancy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The pope described the relationship between the Holy See and\nbishops\u2019 conferences as one of \u201ccooperation, dialogue, and synodality.\u201d In a\nclear move away from the centralism in liturgical matters which grew under Pope\nJohn Paul II and Benedict XVI, Francis has followed the Second Vatican Council\nin giving authority back to bishops\u2019 conferences. He cited his motu proprio Magnum principium,<\/em> which restores\nauthority in liturgical translations to bishops\u2019 conferences. He intended the\nmotu proprio \u201cto promote\u2026a constant collaboration filled with mutual trust,\nvigilant and creative, between the Episcopal Conferences and the dicastery of\nthe Apostolic See.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe Holy See does not replace the bishops,\u201d the pope said, \u201cbut\nworks with them.\u201d He said, \u201cIt is a question of harmony.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Addressing polarization in the church about liturgy, Francis\nrecalled that \u201cthe liturgy is life that forms, not an idea to be learned.\u201d\nQuoting his exhortation Evangelii\ngaudium, <\/em>he stated that \u201creality is more important than the idea.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a seeming reference to liturgical traditionalists,\nFrancis opposed \u201csterile ideological polarizations which often arise when,\nconsidering our own ideas valid for all contexts, we tend to adopt an attitude\nof perennial dialectic towards who does not share them.\u201d Some authors have characterized\nfundamentalism as a response to trauma. While Francis did not cite such\nsources, he said something similar: \u201cStarting perhaps from the desire to react\nto some insecurities in the current context, we risk then falling back into a\npast that no longer exists or of escaping into a presumed future.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The pope spoke of the importance of maintaining ecclesial communion,\nof accepting the liturgy with docility and not giving in to \u201ctastes, recipes\nand currents.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Returning to the issue of liturgical traditionalism, Francis\nused strong words in stating: \u201cWhen we look back to nostalgic past tendencies\nor wish to impose them again, there is the risk of placing the part before the\nwhole, the \u2018I\u2019 before the People of God, the abstract before the concrete,\nideology before communion and, fundamentally, the worldly before the spiritual.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Turning to the topic of the CDW meeting, the pope stated that liturgical formation is not simply about offering knowledge or promoting \u201cdutiful fulfilment of ritual discipline.\u201d There must be attention to \u201csymbolic language, including art, song and music in the service of the mystery celebrated, even silence.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The pope called for ongoing formation of clergy and laity,\nespecially liturgical ministers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Echoing the liturgy constitution Sacrosanctum Concilium, <\/em>which taught that the liturgy is the font and summit of all the Church\u2019s life, Pope Francis told the assembly that \u201cthe liturgy is in fact the main road through which Christian life passes through every phase of its growth. You therefore have before you a great and beautiful task: to work so that the People of God may rediscover the beauty of meeting the Lord in the celebration of His mysteries.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
