(c) ConBrio Verlagsgesellschaft\/Libreria Editrice Vaticana 2011.<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Venite, adoremus Deum, et procidamus ante Dominum:\nploremus ante eum, qui fecit nos: quia ipse est Dominus Deus noster.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cCome, let us worship God, and let us come in before the Lord: Let us wail before him who created us, for he himself is the Lord, our God.\u201d (Ps 95(94):6\u20137)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is interesting how the Greek \u03c0\u03c1\u03bf\u03c3\u03c0\u03ad\u03c3\u03c9\u03bc\u03b5\u03bd (\u201clet us bow down\/prostrate\u201d) became <em>ploremus<\/em> (\u201clet us wail\u201d) in the Latin Vulgate. The 20<sup>th<\/sup> century New Vulgate changed that to <em>genua flectamus<\/em> (\u201clet us bend our knees\u201d).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But does that really make a crucial difference? I do not think so. The sentence describes the relation of the creation to its creator (\u201cbefore him, who created us\u201d). In any translation it is an expression of our own powerlessness in the relation to a gigantic universe, the billions of years of time, and our own coming into existence without our personal influence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Any human being has to find her or his way to deal with that. Christianity offers a positive approach to being a human, it gives us humans dignity by relating us to a trustworthy Creator who is a friend of life. As well as Ps 95(94) lets us \u201cwail\u201d or \u201cbow down\u201d or \u201cbend our knees,\u201d it also lets us \u201cjubilate\u201d (as you can see in the verse in the last two lines).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since the middle of the 1<sup>st<\/sup> millenium, the Latin tradition has used Ps 95(94) as the first psalm of the day (\u201cinvitatory\u201d) in the Liturgy of the Hours. It is sung in the morning, when the forthcoming light of the Sun reminds us of the power of life over death.
