Is 35:4\u20135)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Due to the blessing\nof the candles and the entrance procession, the beginning of this day\u2019s Mass is\na bit different from usual days. The Gregorian Chant knows several short\nantiphons and verses before the regular introit, and this is the very first of\nthem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is a nice\nexample to understand how thoroughly Gregorian Chant deals with language and\nthe meaning of words. Just have a look at the first half:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After <em>Dominus noster<\/em> the regular stream of\nspeech pauses for a moment (made visible by the <em>episem,<\/em> the short slash at the upper end of the neume. The effect\nis similar to a colon or a raising of the voice: \u201cBehold, the Lord&#8230;\u201d \u2013 there\nis tension, something important is about to come. What does this Lord do? \u201cHe\ncomes with power,\u201d and at the stressed syllable of <em>vir-t\u00fa-te<\/em> the melody eventually reaches its highest note by raising\na semitone after the previous recitation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This antiphon\ncelebrates the Lord\u2019s power. This is not self-evident at all: The biblical\nstory behind the feast is that of a helpless, 40-days-old child that needs to\nbe ritually sacrificed according to the law.
